This is an original vintage poster created in 1986 by the highly regarded artist, Raymond Gid for the Bally Company to highlight the elegant and sophisticated leather shoes the company makes. Here, the figure is whimsically abstracted, playing with positive and negative space. Raymond Gid (1905-2000) was a French poster artist who worked predominantly in the specialty of film posters. His style is expressive and usually a bit whimsical, like the piece seen here. Gid worked extensively throughout his life, and his posters date from the late 1920s through the 1980s - quite the impressive career. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Two white people—Reginald and Gladys Laubin—who had lived with Plains Indians were instrumental in bringing Indian dance to the stage as an art form, and one of great subtlety and meaning. Their Crow troupe toured the world. For their engagement in Paris they are billed as the “Redskins Ballet—American Indian Dance Pow Wow.” Gid supplies a dramatically stark image with just a red and white headdress, a tomahawk, and a squiggle of paint for a leg. RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) EXPOSITION ETHNOGRAPHIQUE DES COLONIES. 1931. 23 1/2x15 1/2 inches, 59 1/2x39 1/4 cm. Raymond Gid. Condition A. Matted and framed. Although he was active as a poster designer throughout his life, Gid is best known as a book designer and a master French typographer. In 1930, he wound up in North America on an ethnographic mission to study Canadian Indians. Through the connection he established with the Ethnographic Museum, he was asked to design this poster. The museum, located at the Trocadero, was closed for renovations in 1930, in order to refurbish it before a grand reopening a year later for a major colonial exhibition. Paul Colin designed a famous image to announce the event (see Swann Sale 2079, lot 37). This poster by Gid is for the first exhibition dedicated to the French colonies. The Oceanian idol and the typography are cleverly tilted to catch the eye in a pure Art Deco layout. This poster is a rare and early document pertaining to tribal arts exhibitions, a field that reached its pinnacle 75 years after this poster was designed with the opening of Paris' Quai Branly Museum. A surrealistic fantasy in Art Deco minimalism, it plays with the magic and downright oddness of the toy. The yo-yo craze effectively began the year this poster was printed, when Donald F. Duncan bought out a rival manufacturer in Santa Barbara, then teamed up with Hearst newspapers to promote yo-yo contests. The artist of this beautiful study in madcap lunacy, Raymond Gid, trained as an architect before becoming a graphic journeyman. He created corporate logos, typography and posters for a number of major clients including Dresch motorcycles (see PAI-LXXIV, 115) and the poster for Hitchcock's "The Birds." (Product; Art Deco)

The French graphic artist and designer Raymond Gid is highly respected in the world of graphic design. His career spanned five decades, and he was responsible for designing book covers, advertising posters and a number of film posters. His poster for Les Diaboliques is one of his most celebrated designs, with its use of multi-media effects. The director Henri Clouzot competed with Alfred Hitchcock for the rights to this film. The plot, a murder conspiracy that spirals out of control, was irresistible to both of them.

Although he was active as a poster designer throughout his life, Raymond Gid was also known as a book designer and a master French typographer. In the 1930s, Gid was involved in ethnography, and as a member of the "Society of French Explorers," he took part in a four month mission to Northern Canada to study the indigenous peoples. Soon after, he designed several posters for the Ethnographic Museum in Paris. Fittingly, in 1953, he was called to design this poster for dance performances by the Crow Nation of the Rocky Mountains - incorporating typography on a black background, with the figure of a chief, characterized only by the outlines of his feathered headdress and a tomahawk. rare. RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) VAMPYR. 1932. 31 1/4x23 1/2 inches, 79 1/2x59 3/4 cm. Condition A. Raymond Gid studied architecture at the L'École des Beaux arts, but never put those studies into practice. Instead, he became an accomplished poster artist, designing many movie posters, the first of which was this image for Vampyr. This poster was commissioned for the opening of Raspail 216, an avant-garde cinema located in Montparnasse. As Gid wrote, he "tried to give a synthetic vision of the mysterious atmosphere of the work." He mixed photography and drawing to create a collage of contrasts, between highlights and shadows, and realism and abstraction. He also used this technique in the same year for Histoires Extraordinaires, based on Edgar Allen Poe's book, for the opening of Cinema Pigalle. rare. Raymond Gid p. 19.
