Gibbings (Robert, 1889-1958). The Retreat from Serbia, 1916 AR * Gibbings (Robert, 1889-1958). The Retreat from Serbia, 1916, woodcut printed in colours, on wove paper, signed and dated to lower right blank margin in pencil, some light spotting, image size 17.8 x 17.8 cm (7 x 7 ins), sheet size 23.7 x 21.1 cm QTY: (1) NOTE: This woodcut was used as the frontispiece to The Wood Engravings of Robert Gibbings, edited by Patience Empson. "The Retreat from Serbia is based on a remarkable photograph taken by a war correspondent, published in 'The Illustrated London News' on 15 January 1916. The Serbian commander-in-chief, Marshall Putnik, was heading the retreat from the Germans through Albania. His soldiers carried him in a sedan chair over the Bridge of the Visiers, which crossed a river, the White Drin. The artist's eye was caught by the stark but beautiful lines of the stonework of the sixteenth-century Ottoman bridge. Its distinctive parabola form, without any parapet, was characteristic of many bridges adapted from Roman architecture by Ottoman military engineers throughout the Turkish Empire. A subject matter for his early prints, Gibbings often used the silhouetted forms of architecture, as they were peculiarly suited to the hard-edged patterns rendered by the woodcut block. The subtle colouring enhances the melancholy nature of the subject." An archive of correspondence between Robert Gibbings, and Patience Empson, (his partner, sister in law and secretary) and Mrs Eileen Mary Odams, 1952-1993, 55 hand or type written letters and cards, comprising: 8 letters from Gibbings (from 1952-57) and 47 from Patience Empson (from 1958-1993) to Mrs Eileen Odams, in one letter Gibbings describes his creative method: 'as regards "emotion"; yes, it is the first essential but there are others as well of which '"analysis" of that emotion is probably the first in importance. After analysis you have got to decide the "form" in which your thoughts can but be expressed and then the phrases and marks that will most clearly and succinctly impress the thoughts. Emotion is like the material from which a tailor cuts a suit of clothes. It has to be considered as carefully as the pattern of a tweed. The style has just to be planned to suit the wearer (the publisher). The stitching (the labour) must not show.', another letter from Patience Empson advising Mrs Odams 'Mr Gibbings is in hospital, having had a serious operation last Tuesday' dated 18th January 1958, (a day before his death), together with a collection of 40 books illustrated by Robert Gibbings, including: The Twelve Months by Llewelyn Powys, London: The Bodley Head, 1936; Over the Reefs and Far Away by Robert Gibbings, New York: E. Clear Waters, 1920, woodcut on wove paper, from the published edition of 50 impressions, signed, dated, and numbered 46.50 in pencil, and titled in the artist's hand to lower left blank margin, a few light marks to outer blank margins (generally in very good condition), hinge-mounted to upper outer corners of the sheet, 248 x 133 mm (9.75 x 5.25 ins), sheet size 305 x 190 mm (12.5 x 7.5 ins), framed and glazed QTY: (1) NOTE: One of Gibbings' most striking and well-known woodcuts from his early period (1918-1922), using the 'vanishing line' technique, in which the form is not defined by line, but the boundary between light and shadow (also exploited to great effect by fellow artist Edward Wadsworth).

§ Robert Gibbings (Irish 1889-1958) Whale Hunt, probably an illustration from The Wreck of the Whale Ship Essex, Owen Chase, published by the Golden Cockerel Press, 1935 signed 'Robertgibbings' (lower right) wood engraving, unframed 25.5 x 20cm (sheet) Born in Cork in 1889, artist, sculptor, and author Robert Gibbings is widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant printmakers of the 20th century, notable both for his role as a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers and for his work at the helm of the Golden Cockerel Press. After a brief career as a commercial artist, in 1924, Gibbings took over as the owner and director of the Golden Cockerel Press. Under his auspices, the press became a pivotal vehicle for wood engraving, bringing the medium to the collective attention of the public. Of the 72 books produced in those nine years, 48 were illustrated with engravings. In addition to his prodigious talents as a wood engraver, Gibbings was also known as a hugely industrial writer, celebrated for his series of bestselling river books, notably Sweet Thames run Softly.
