After "GIAMBOLOGNA", JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608). Italy, 19th century. "Mercury." Sculpture in patinated bronze. Marble pedestal. It has lost part of the caduceus. Measurements: 84 cm (total height with pedestal). The work, from the neoclassical period, follows the model of the original sculpture of the Renaissance artist Jean de Bologne, better known by the Italianized form of his name, "Giambologna", now preserved in the Bargello Museum in Florence. The present version also has a frieze on the pedestal that did not exist in the Flemish sculpture. The original piece, originally made in 1567, presents the classical divinity Mercury (Roman version of the Greek Hermes), the messenger of the gods. The artist has sought to translate the lightness and speed of the character through a posture of great audacity. The god defies the laws of gravity by leaning only on the tips of the toes of his left foot, which barely touches the base of the sculpture, which consists of a male head exhaling a breath of air. This is the personification of the south wind, a figure also deified in classical mythology and Mercury's ally in the propagation of news, good and bad. Despite this reduced base, the artist managed to create a very balanced piece, where the gestures of the arms and legs are perfectly balanced to allow the bronze to support itself without the need for added elements. Thus, the right arm rises towards the sky in an expressive gesture, while the left arm moves back and balances it, holding the herald's emblematic rod. With this work, brimming with movement, grace and delicacy, where the artist also works admirably with the nude, some of the most outstanding contributions of the classical Italian Renaissance are summarized: the recovery of Antiquity, both in themes and forms, the monumental free-standing sculpture or the nude, male and female. On the other hand, the search for movement, dynamism, even the instability of the figure, prelude some aspects of Mannerism and the Baroque trends of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Following models of "GIAMBOLOGNA", JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608), 19th century. "Mercury" and "Fortuna", Bronze. Measurements: 84 cm Set formed by two bronze sculptures, representation of the goddess Fortuna, which presents clear stylistic similarities with a work created by Giovanni Bologna (Giambologna) around 1560, as well as with his famous Mercury, conserved in the Civic Museum of Bologna. Worked in rounded bulk, the artist has sought to translate the lightness of the characters through a bold posture, inspired by the one Giambologna used for his Mercury. The figures balance on the wind coming out of the mouth of a zephyr, defying the laws of gravity. Yet the elegant figures convey a balanced posture, brimming with grace. A slight twist underlines the curves of a supple body, inspired by Italian Renaissance models. On the other hand, the movement, the dynamic composition, adheres to mannerist solutions, of which Giambologna was a representative. With these works, full of movement, grace, delicacy, where the artist also admirably works the nude, some of the most outstanding contributions of the classical Italian Renaissance are summarized: the recovery of Antiquity, both in the themes and in the forms, the monumental free-standing sculpture or the nude, male and female. On the other hand, the search for movement, dynamism, even the instability of the figure, prelude some aspects of Mannerism and the Baroque trends of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Ges.-H. 67 cm. Provenienz: aus der über Generationen gewachsenen Slg. Michahelles, Hamburg. French or Italian sculptor after Giambologna (1529 - 1608). Dark patinated and gilt bronze. 19th C. cast.

Jean de Boulogne detto Giambologna (style of) (Douai 1529-Firenze 1608) : Venus in the bath

    Est: €2,000 - €4,000

18th-19th century Black patinated bronze sculpture: 23 x 13 x 9 cm base: 3 x 12 x 10 cm This bronze reproduces a famous "crouching" Venus by Giambologna. The original bronze is preserved in the Bargello National Museum, Florence (inv.62 B). Many bronze derivations were produced up to the 18th century and even later. This fusion certainly denotes great executive ability and probably dates back to the 18th century or to the early 19th century. The bronze, which could be part of the refined grand tour production, maintains the same typical elements of the original casting, for example the gesture of the hand and the squared nails, so typical of Giambologna's style. The quality of the chisel and the smoothness of the body make it a rare collector's item. Various bronze copies exist: the one signed GIO BOLONGE is in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston has a pendant around its neck which represents the plumb bob. In this version the bob is not present.  This work is a terracotta version, originally bronzed. Est: €4,000 - €6,000

18th century Bronze with transparent golden patina sculpture: 77 x 34 x 30 cm base: 5 x 20 x 21 cm This Mercury is an ancient replica of one of the most famous sculptures created by Giambologna in Florence. The monumental work is currently located at the Bargello National Museum, Florence, while the bozzetto is kept in the Medieval Museum of Bologna. It is one of the most replicated sculptures by the Flemish artist. This copy denotes high quality and an extraordinary stylistic closeness to the best ancient productions of Giambologna's school. Some worth noting details are the treatment of the nails, the facial expression and the way the locks escape the grip of the helmet. The bronze was probably made in 18th century or even earlier. Jean de Boulogne detto Giambologna (style of) (Douai 1529-Firenze 1608) : Bathing Venus from Giambologna's model

    Est: €2,000 - €4,000

18th century Alabaster sculpture: 31 x 12 x 13 cm base: 15 x 15 x 15 cm This sculpture reproduces a famous "crouching" Venus by Giambologna. The original bronze is preserved in the Bargello National Museum, Florence (inv.62 B). It is a masterpiece by the great Flemish master signed with the initials I.B.F. on the bracelet that surrounds Venus' right arm. Since it is impossible to venture any type of attribution, we remember that many bronze derivations were produced and documented up to the 18th century and even beyond. Certainly, the aforementioned alabaster sculpture denotes great executive ability and probably dates back to the 18th century, if not to the previous one. Note the features of the kneeling woman which reveal a careful study of the anatomical details of the female body. Probably 17th-18th century Bronze with transparent golden patina sculpture: 24 x 26 x 9 cm base: 11 x 23 x 13 cm The horse repeats the equestrian statue of Cosimo I de' Medici, located in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. Giambologna successors' foundry, such as Antonio Susini, created little models inspired by that monumental sculpture. Fine and well-finished fusion with light transparent patina in golden tones, typical of ancient Tuscan production. Similar model can be found in Victoria and Albert Museum, attributed to Antonio Susini.   With non-coeval base in wood and ruin marble. 17th-18th century Silver, ancient traces of oxidation 17 x 15 x 4 cm Cataloging the crucifixes that came out of Giambologna's foundry, or from those workshops that were inspired by him, represents one of the mysteries of creation. The stylistic innovations brought to the subject by the great sculptor spread throughout Tuscany throughout the seventeenth century, generating not only bronzes, but also goldsmith works. Far from the idea of risking attributions to great names, and a strong resemblance of the Christ presented here to certain works, in silver, by the sculptor, providing a stimulus for reflection for the connoisseur collector. We know the corpus of large Crucifixes produced by Giambologna's foundry (SS. Annunziata, Santa Maria degli Angiolini, Convento San Marco...), reductions were made from these courtly models for domestic worship or for diplomatic gifts. The production of these objects was carried out by Susini, his close collaborator, or by some specialized worker, presenting small variations. Another typology is that deriving from the small altar Christ, in silver, from the Holy House of Loreto, which inspired our Crucifix. This model features a less taut thong generating a sort of triangle between the thighs. Knotted on the right side it ends with a soft and long sash. The Crucifix in question is in evident dialogue with that model, certainly the work of Giambologna, and with it is inspired with slight variations. In Giambologna's school the thongs vary while maintaining constants. The crucifix presented here falls within these parameters. In Michael Hall's Parisian collection there is a crucifix very similar to the one presented here. Charles Avery states, in the critical entry, that it is a model by Giambologna with the assistance of Antonio Susini. Probably 17th century Bronze, transparent reddish patina with dark traces sculpture: 22 x 17 x 11 cm base: 6 x 11 x 11 cm This famous bronze depicts a particular type of nocturnal hunting, practiced especially in northern Europe, with the use of lanterns to dazzle the animal and a club to hit it. Two versions attributed to the school of Giambologna or Antonio Susini exist, both today in the Bargello National Museum in Florence. The one proposed here is close to model "B", even though the lantern and the club are reversed. The sculpture presented here is very plastic and has a splendid reddish patina, typical of the best Florentine productions. After “GIAMBOLOGNA”, JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 – Florence, 1608). Italy, 19th century. "Mercury". Bronze sculpture. Marble base. He has lost part of the caduceus. Measurements: 84 cm. (total height with base). The work, from the neoclassical period, follows the model of the original sculpture by the Renaissance artist Jean de Bologne, better known by the Italianized form of his name, “Giambologna”, today preserved in the Museo del Bargello in Florence. The version in question also presents a frieze on the base that did not exist in Flemish sculpture. The original piece, originally made in 1567, features the classical deity Mercury (Roman version of the Greek Hermes), the messenger of the gods. The artist has sought to translate the lightness and speed of the character through a posture of great audacity. The god defies the laws of gravity by barely resting on the tips of the toes of his left foot, which barely touches the base of the sculpture, made up of a male head exhaling a breath of air. This is the personification of the south wind, a figure also deified in classical mythology and an ally of Mercury in the spread of news, good and bad. Despite this small base, the artist managed to create a very balanced piece, where the gestures of the arms and legs are perfectly balanced to allow the bronze to stand without the need for added elements. Thus, the right arm rises towards the sky in an expressive gesture, while the left moves back and balances it, holding the emblem of the herald. With this work, overflowing with movement, grace, delicacy, where the artist also works admirably with the nude, some of the most outstanding contributions of the classical Italian Renaissance are summarized: the recovery of Antiquity, both in the themes as in the forms, the free-standing monumental sculpture or the nude, male and female. On the other hand, the search for movement, dynamism, even the instability of the figure, prelude some aspects of mannerism and the baroque currents of the late 16th and 17th centuries.

Giambologna, whose real name was Jean Boulogne (1529-1608), was a Flemish-Italian sculptor known for his remarkable skill in creating dynamic and intricate sculptures. One of his notable works is the "Medici Walking Horse," also known as the "Florentine Horse and Rider" or "Equestrian Monument of Cosimo I."The "Medici Walking Horse" is a bronze sculpture created by Giambologna between 1570 and 1580. It was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, to commemorate his achievements and celebrate the Medici family's power and influence. The sculpture depicts a powerful, muscular horse captured in mid-stride, with its front legs in the air and its hind legs extended. The horse exudes a sense of energy and movement, its mane flowing, and its tail lifted. It stands on an oval base adorned with reliefs representing military triumphs.Originally, the horse was intended to have an equestrian rider, but due to financial constraints, Giambologna left the sculpture unfinished in terms of the rider. Nevertheless, the "Medici Walking Horse" remains a masterpiece in its own right, showcasing Giambologna's skill in capturing the dynamic anatomy and naturalistic details of the horse. The sculpture is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail, with every muscle and sinew meticulously rendered. It is considered a prime example of Mannerist sculpture, characterized by its elongated proportions, complex poses, and intricate surface textures. The "Medici Walking Horse" is housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy, where it continues to be admired for its artistic and historical significance. It stands as a testament to Giambologna's mastery of sculpture and his contributions to the Renaissance and Mannerist art movements. Bonded bronze, sculpture Measures 10.5 x 9.5 x 3.5. Attributed to GIAMBOLOGNA", JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608) and workshop. "Dead Christ". Bronze. It has iron base of later period. Measurements: 42 x 34,5 x 10 cm; 70 x 25 x 25 x 25 cm (base). The piece is supported on a base since it lacks the cross. However, in his hands and feet can be observed several holes that represent the wounds made by the nails that support him to the cross. As for the sculpture, in this case we observe how the sculptor uses only three nails, thus accentuating the drama of the scene, which is enhanced by the elongation of the upper extremities that reflect how Christ supports the entire load of his body, with his face downwards, exhausted. The polished finish of the material, the symmetry and the modeling of the forms that follow the classical canon of a balanced and idealized anatomy, form an image that, in spite of the dramatism contained in the theme of the crucifixion, transmits an immutable beauty that comes from the aesthetic serenity with which the sculptor has conceived the work. Giambologna was born in Douai, Flanders, in 1529. After youthful studies in Antwerp with the architect-sculptor Jacques du Broeucq, he moved to Italy in 1550 and studied in Rome, making a detailed study of the sculpture of classical antiquity. He was also greatly influenced by Michelangelo, but developed his own mannerist style, perhaps with less emphasis on emotion and more attention on refined surfaces, cool elegance and beauty. Pope Pius IV gave Giambologna his first major commission, the colossal bronze Neptune and subsidiary figures for the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna. Giambologna spent his most productive years in Florence, where he had settled in 1553. In 1563 he was appointed a member of the prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, newly founded by Duke Cosimo I de Medici. The Medici had never allowed him to leave Florence, as they rightly feared that the Austrian or Spanish Habsburgs would lure him into permanent employment.
