Very beautiful, flawless cast with dark green patina. Table and glass top in good condition. Diego Giacometti was undoubtedly one of the most imaginative and exciting furniture designers in post-war Paris. His idiosyncratic style was characterised by elegant furniture and furnishings made of bronze. In addition to the classic, antique-like design language, it was above all a whole, almost magical menagerie of animals that "populated" the furniture. From giraffes, ostriches, mice, owls, dogs, cats and deer to toads, Diego assembled a whole repertoire of animals, which he arranged in various combinations. Apparently, according to Eberhard W. Kornfeld, you could even choose which animals should be immortalised on a piece of furniture. Diego had boxes with casts of the individual pieces, which he then arranged and mounted on a table or console. He then meticulously recorded the sales in a "carnet", and the finished piece of furniture could be collected from the studio later. The artist mastered all the stages of bronze casting, from the plaster model to the uneven patina, which was to become his trademark and great secret. Each piece then had its own unique tonality. In later years, when Diego received the major commissions that would make his name, for example to furnish the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence or the Musée Picasso in Paris, it became increasingly difficult for private customers to acquire pieces directly from Diego's studio. The table with two toads and a bowl offered here was purchased by Kornfeld for his private household. A very anecdotal work, the two toads appear to be waiting for food, which is offered in the bowl. Growing up in the Bregaglia valley as the second child in Giovanni Giacometti's family of artists, Diego Giacometti was long overshadowed by his father and older brother Alberto, who had already made a name for himself as an artist in Paris in the 1920s. After leaving school, Diego began a commercial apprenticeship, but followed his brother to Paris in February 1925. When Alberto met the interior architect and furniture designer Jean-Michel Frank through Man Ray in 1929 and from then on began to design furniture himself, Diego finally found his calling by assisting his brother in the realisation and production of these "design objects". Alberto later even entrusted his brother with the entire manufacturing process. In 1935, during an extended stay in his home town of Stampa in the Bregaglia valley, Diego began to realise his first animal sculptures. Back in Paris, he attended courses at the "Académie Scandinave". From 1939 he created larger sculptural works and from 1950 he concentrated on furniture and objects. Diego modelled his works in plaster and later cast them in bronze. What was unusual was that many of his works were not cast in one piece, but rather in individual parts that were later welded together to form a whole. This means that all his works are always slightly different, even if they were produced as a "series". Not least for this reason, Diego soon became a favourite designer of the Parisian upper class. He also designed numerous commissions, including the chandelier offered here, which Eberhard W. Kornfeld originally had made for his holiday home in Valais in 1962. He later commissioned a second, identical chandelier. Probably in connection with this second order, without Kornfeld's knowledge, Diego produced a third version with a slightly modified suspension for the Brazilian entrepreneur Francisco (Baby) Matarazzo Pignatari. In addition to the large chandelier, a smaller version was created in which the pair of acrobats were arranged on a kind of trapeze under a light bulb. The chandelier offered here comes directly from Diego's studio and remained at Rothaus in Bolligen until Eberhard W. Kornfeld's death.
