Lorenzo Ghiglieri Sold at Auction Prices

American artist Lorenzo Ghiglieri was awarded an art scholarship at age 17, but he had to cut his education short when he was called into the military during the Korean War. The first commissioned Lorenzo Ghiglieri painting was a seascape for the U.S. Government to give to United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation. He eventually moved to Alaska, at which point Lorenzo Ghiglieri's paintings focused on the indigenous peoples and harsh wilderness.

Lorenzo Ghiglieri's artwork is not limited to oil paintings; he is also a celebrated master sculptor. In 1994, Lorenzo Ghiglieri's sculpture Official American Bald Eagle, created from bronze, silver, and gold, was made a permanent piece in the White House art collection.     Featured in this lot is large bronze sculpture titled, "Spooked" and dated 2008 by American artist Lorenzo E. Ghiglieri (1931-2020), this is a unique one of a kind Artist Proof example. The sculpture features a wonderfully and professionally crafted bronze construction that shows a tall Grizzly bear standing on its hind feet gripping a broken tree by the trunk. The bronze shows wonderful attention to detail with life like features. The base is marked as follows: Lorenzo Ghiglieri - AP - 2/850 - 2008 - Spooked. The condition of this large bear bronze is good with no obvous signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this Lorenzo Ghiglieri (November 25, 1931 – January 25, 2020) was an American painter and sculptor. The Portland, Oregon, newspaper Willamette Week referred to Ghiglieri as "one of the Northwest's best-recognized and most prolific bronze sculptors." Ghiglieri's sculptures are displayed in a wide variety of locations around the world. His 27-foot (8.2 m)-high sculpture of an eagle is located at the entrance of the Seven Feathers Casino near Canyonville, Oregon. Ghiglieri also has works on permanent display at the White House, the Vatican, and Middlebury College. The condition of this Bronze sculpture is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows a good overall condition. The measurements of this bronze sculpture is 27 1/2" x 13" x 23" and it weighs 81 pounds. Provenance: From a prominent ex-Bozeman private collection who purchased the majority of his collection from Cowan's, Skinner, Bonhams, Morphy's, Sotheby's, March in Montana, North American Auction and other well revered auction houses.

    Lorenzo E. Ghiglieri (1931 - 2020) "King At Rest" Bronze Sculpture. Contemporary Oregon painter and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiglieri was born in Los Angeles, California, on November 25, 1931. His precise sculptures in bronze, again of large stature, are sometimes over 30 feet tall. Lorenzo was a Korean War Naval Veteran. He was assigned to the Headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as staff illustrator and naval painter. During this tour came a commission for a marine painting of the cruiser, U.S.S. Baltimore, which was officially presented by the United States to Great Britain on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Influenced by his Italian sculptor father, Angelo, and his French pianist and vocalist mother, Frieda, Lorenzo Ghiglieri grew up in a world of ethnic blends that was to enrich his art. Both of his grandfathers were artists, one a sculptor and the other a musician-conductor. Lorenzo sees himself as a storyteller, and works in a style he relates to baroque realism. His is not a static naturalism, but a robust organization of nature observed along lines of action and counteraction. Ghiglieri's work is held in numerous prominent collections, including the permanent White House Collection, the Vatican, Kremlin, and the Smithsonian Museum. Many world leaders possess his sculptures, among them Pope John Paul II, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Queen Elizabeth.     LORENZO GHIGLIERI (American 1931-2020) A SCULPTURE, "Lookout," 2000, cold painted cast bronze on wood plinth, signed, and dated at base, "Lorenzo Ghiglieri," and with edition number 3/475; height: 26", width: 14 1/2", depth: 20", on stand height: 50", width: 20", depth: 24". Note: Lorenzo Ghiglieri sculpted, painted and preserved American frontier artwork. His bronzeworks are held in prestigious collections including The White House, Washington D.C., Juan Carlos I, King of Spain, and Luciano Pavarotti, among others. He was born in Los Angeles, later served in the Korean war, shortly after was commissioned as a combat illustrator for the United States Government, even painting gifts of state. He chose a life of solitude as a frontiersman in Alaska. The present lot of two cold painted rams cautiously ascend a rocky terrain.
