Part of the pikeniers handling the pike. Made by Jacques / Jacob de Gheyn II assisted by his workshop after his own design. Jacques/Jacob de Gheyn II (Antwerp c. 1565 – The Hague 1629) was a Dutch painter and engraver, whose work shows the transition from Nothern Mannerism to Dutch Realism over the course of his career. He studied under Hendrik Goltzius in Haarlem.

            This hughe masterpiece printed on two joined sheets of laid paper is comparable in size and treatment of some figures to the Judgement of Midas by Goltzius from 1590. It not only has exactly the same size but also lany of the elegant figures are very similar in style. Shown is: The Parable of the Prodigal Son; a group of finely attired figures dance, lounge and drink outside; at right a man carouses with a woman who empties a wine glass near a fountain and covered arcade; nearby stands a youth with a jug and a tray; a couple dance as a group of musicians play on violins and a cello; in the foreground at left three fools converse and giggle at the scene; by Jacques de Gheyn (1565-1629) after Van Mander (1548-1606). Engraving from 1596. "KVMandere inven, Iacobus de geÿn sculptor... excudit erased. This state with the publishers address of On a slab in the design a dedication to Georg Eberhard, Count of Solms and Lord of Muntzenberg and Sonnewalt (1566-1602) and date.
