Oil on canvas, 2014 Behnaz Ghasemi was born in 1977 in Mashhad. She studied Art in Dubai, Mashhad and London. Her work has been exhibited in Iran and the UAE. Ghasemi won the 2013 outdoor sculpture competition of the municipality of Tehran. Her practice at the borderline between painting and photography, investigates landscapes in time and plays with the viewer’s perception, stretching the limits of her format and bringing forth renditions of nature based entirely on light. “In traditional Persian miniatures, the universe is defined through symbolic representation of the material world. Creatures and objects are drawn in two-dimensional flat illustrations. This manner of imagery has its roots in Eastern epistemology where poets and painters use a unique language to explain a platonic abstract world beyond the restrictions of time and locale. As such, a flower is not drawn to depict a hyacinth or a rose; but it is to confer the abstract meaning of Flower. In this series of my work which is a tribute to Persian traditional painting and the Flower and Nightingale genre in particular, the birds are taken from the eternal form of a bird; pondering and in suspense; illustrated in a flat two-dimensional style, perhaps in search of the meaning of Flower.
