YUSOF GHANI : Siri Topeng - Antu Rangka, 1995

    Est: RM35,000 - RM55,000

“We’re like hiding behind masks, sometimes for good reasons and sometimes not.” When Yusof Ghani took trips to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991, he was immediately taken with the masks of the Kenyah and Kayan. He claimed, “I found masks interesting as they could be used as motifs in paintings to make a cultural statement – about ceremony and rituals. They can also be used to preserve our slowly eroding local cultures and offer opportunities for a social commentary on human pretensions and falsehoods.” Topeng is basically an expression of faces, there are simply no nice images in it. This oil on canvas art piece combines brush strokes in controlled structures, intensified by outlines, showing Ghani’s effort to explore new forms and visual approaches that are to the point, solid, structured and meaningful, such as in the case of this piece of artwork. Born in 1950 in Johor, Malaysia, Ghani frequented a small movie theater that was run by a family member as a young boy, where he developed a predisposition towards painting to depict movement and a sense of time through cowboy films. He cites Pollock and de Kooning as his early inspirations, but he eventually began to develop his unique style in painting, with masks being his theme for many years as a motif to explore human emotions and circumstances. The masks often appear displaced, implying at the rough state us human beings are always in. The NHB of Singapore has about four pieces by Yusof Ghani, namely ‘Gawai’, ‘Tangkal’ and two pieces from his Tari series.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Segerak - Breakthrough, 2006

    Est: RM60,000 - RM90,000

Yusof Ghani is a prominent Malaysian artist celebrated for his innovative contributions to contemporary art. Born in 1950 in Johor, Yusof pursued his artistic education at the National Art Gallery of Malaysia and later studied at George Mason University in Virginia, USA in 1979. His diverse body of works often explores themes of identity, culture, and the human experience. Yusof’s works often reflect social issues, emphasizing the importance of storytelling in art. He employs symbolism to address the complexities of Malaysian identity, particularly in a multicultural society. His artistic journey has led to numerous solo exhibitions both locally and internationally, establishing him as a significant figure in the Southeast Asian art scene. This series Segerak, or “in unison” art piece, is all about intensity, feeling, and coordinated movements. Although it has changed over time, the core idea that human needs, wants, emotions, and desires are a single force that motivates humanity and transcends space and time has not changed.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Ombak - Gelugor, 2009

    Est: RM60,000 - RM100,000

Yusof Ghani was born in 1950 in Johor and used to frequent a small movie theatre as a young boy, where he developed a predisposition towards painting. He received a scholarship to study art at George Mason University, USA, where he studied Graphic Art and proceeded to pursue his Master’s in Fine Art at Catholic University, Washington. Upon returning to Malaysia, he began lecturing in Universiti MARA Institute of Technology. Most notably known for Abstract Expressionism, his other popular series are Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Segerak and Biring. The creative process in Ombak encompasses three principal thematic phases, namely: destruction, humanity and awakening. These three phases put forth a collection of strong, bold and impressive artworks as can be seen in “Gelugor”. In this kind of creative process, Yusof is indirectly interpreting the nature of human and life. As the Malay proverb goes, “kalau takut dilambung ombak, jangan berumah di tepi pantai”: if we desire awakening and change, then we must be willing to confront challenges and suffering and not be afraid to attempt difficult tasks.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Segerak, 2005

    Est: RM200,000 - RM280,000

Yusof Ghani’s deep interest in the human form has seen him create masterpieces in his Tari series (with the combination of abstract expressionism with figuration), yet the artist decided that he was not done capturing the essence of form as he revisits the same theme in the Segerak series in 2003. He explores the human figure once more, with less of a forceful environment and mood. While it may be a reinterpretation of human figures, he approaches it in a more philosophical way. Instead of his usual personal and social commentaries such as war, famine, poverty and injustice, it is now more about the positive and negative forces in the world today. Although the theme here is mellower than his works in Tari, this artwork is no less vibrant and energetic and to document these movements, spontaneous marks and lines decorate his canvas – confident and broad and expressive to capture the right atmosphere for his story.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Tari III, 1984/85

    Est: RM500,000 - RM750,000

Yusof Ghani, born in 1950 in Johor, is a Malaysian painter, sculptor, writer, professor and curator and an art collector himself. His career spans over three decades which has produced a very diverse series of artworks dealing with Southeast Asian motifs with an Abstract Expressionist approach. His works blend painting and drawing into a visual entity pleasing to the eye of its beholder. During Yusof’s master’s programme in Catholic University, Washington DC, he had to produce a series of cultural paintings for his thesis. This was when he turned to his roots and found a dance dubbed ‘mak yong’ that inspired his thesis. The ‘mak yong’ dance is a dance-drama performed by women for the royal court. It was deemed as a subtle message of the people to the king. Enthused by the ‘mak yong’, the Tari series was born and became his artistic platform for social commentaries such as the imbalance in Malaysian society, between the rich and poor as well as the powerful and the powerless. Initially, Yusof’s Tari series was somewhat a literal interpretation of women dancing, subsequently progressing into an expressionistic nature, particularly the American expressionism. Even though he uses figures as his reference, it slowly developed into linear strokes and became very ambiguous. The technique of painting morphed into an aggressive, spontaneous and a dialogue with the painting. It allowed Yusof to be more free in expressing himself and thoughts. Yusof Ghani’s Tari Series revolves around social remarks, and until this day, remains as his most popular and coveted series. In this series, he uses dance paintings to portray human behaviour and to experiment with lines, movement and colour. Despite how elegant this painting of dancing looks, it was never intended to be graceful. The lines and sketches on this artwork were executed freely and spontaneously in a frenzied and haphazard manner. “Life is sometimes like dancing – we move about with no purpose but we get lots of pleasure out of it,” said Yusof. Artworks by the artist are collected not just by private collectors but also, by the institutions in Malaysia and Singapore.

The series Hijau (beginning c.1998) consists of paintings that can be seen as abstract landscapes. These are influenced by an encounter the artist had in Sarawak; the sight of felled logs by a riverbank brought home the reality of the rape of Nature. The intense, diagonal strokes detailed in the foreground in rich shades of red were integrated with delicate hilly terrains to create a profound sense of depth and grandeur. Senggarang from this series is one of the largest size single canvas Hijau exhibited at the Petronas exhibition by the artist, Yusof Ghani.

YUSOF GHANI : Siri Segerak - Fishmonger, 2003

    Est: RM80,000 - RM120,000

Yusof Ghani’s Segerak is a dynamic, abstract work which explores the power and movement of human figures in expressive, gestural strokes. The figures are not fully defined, symbolizing the fluidity of human existence and the complexity of social and cultural interactions. Through the Segerak series, Yusof Ghani was able to explore the human figure as a symbol of life, which he then transformed into abstract statements to depict humanity’s contrasting realities of struggle and victory, aggression and celebration, realism and fantasy. Observations from his own experiences, travels and heritage are the source of energy, movement and tension which he captures through a combined expression of drawing and painting. The artist has come to realisation that time and space don’t matter; the human reality and aspirations are the same and are driven by the desire of building a better future.

Yusof Ghani is a Malaysian Asian Modern & Contemporary painter who was born in 1950. In this work, the figures, seen as a formative generator and embodiment of movement is radically altered by Yusof Ghani. He dismantles and transforms them into monochrome and curving lines. They are almost forceful, and at times, even awkward. Graphic components – consisting of straight and curving lines as well as cross-hatching clusters, are dominant and profuse. The juxtaposition of this piece is as so – as if all the movements involved in the piece are converging towards a meeting point, even while they maintain their own distinct space and characteristics. It is the bridging of realism and abstraction. It is perhaps the absence of colours that gives this painting that polished, fluid flair.

    Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Senggarang - Hijau Series, 1999

    Est: RM110,000 - RM180,000

Executed in 1999, Senggarang reveals Yusof Ghani's perception of the natural world, exemplified through the harmony of colours. Powerful swaths of exuberant brushwork were applied with force across the canvas in sweeping motions, ardently capturing the spiritual ambience of land, water, and luxuriant vegetation. Details such as the intense, diagonal strokes in the foreground in rich shades of red were integrated with delicate hilly terrains to create a profound sense of depth and grandeur. The artist's paintings in the Hijau Series are distinguished by lyrical gestures, nuances of light and dark, and intricate structures accented by hints of green - a colour of hope, peace, and regeneration. The Hijau Series conceived in 1998 marked a captivating shift from the figurative towards addressing the importance of nature and man's duty to preserve it, leading to the fervent exploration of new forms revealing the interconnectedness of our world and exudes the poetic sentiment of belonging to a larger entity. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). Then he got a scholarship to study for his BFA at the George Mason University in the United States (1981), and MFA at the Catholic University in Washington, USA (1983). On his return, he lectured at the Universiti ITM with the rank of Associate Professor, but unleashed some of the most memorable art series: Tari, Topeng, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak, Biring, Wajah, Ombak and Kuda. He singlehandedly organised the Shah Alam Biennale involving artists from 15 countries in 2016. Yusof Ghani made his London foray with an exhibition, Segerak VI - Transcendent Figures, at the Asia House in early April 2017. In Hijau Series, Yusof Ghani embarked on a journey to explore the forms of nature, by recording and translating his experiences onto the canvas. Resplendent and imbued with force, this work draws the viewer into the mountain landscape, home to an abundance of plants and animals, fresh water, and minerals. The series was first unveiled in the exhibition, Ombak: Breath Of Life at Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery in 2014. The use of form and light to depict positive movements and energy are characteristic of Segerak. The artist uses expressive lines and light colour tones to give focus to the contours of the body. Segerak sees Yusof Ghani's inexorable return to non-obvious full figuration and this is nearing the last tranche, ending in 2019. The figure-types resemble Tari, except they are not dancing, but are facing unknown challenges and strife which are related to the art of survival. As he intoned: "Segerak has allowed me to explore the human figure as a symbol of life, which I transform into abstract statements to depict humanity's contrasting realities of struggle and victory, aggression and celebration, realism and fantasy." Yusof Ghani (b. 1950) Rainforest (Topeng Series), 1996

    Est: RM17,000 - RM27,000

Rainforest is a painting on paper which derives from Topeng Series - its motif has been simplified into gestural lines contained in a powerful composition - the surface is densely wrought in red, blue, yellow and white. Each forceful stroke binds the interlocking shades together, preventing the vibrant colours from exploding. Topeng (Mask) Series by Yusof Ghani was conceived after an inspirational trip to Sarawak in 1988 and 1991 where he was captivated by the mask rituals of ethnic Kenyah and Kayan whose villages are located two hours outside the city of Kuching. The idea to explore deeper into the mystical and mysterious world of masks first transpired upon his frequent visits to the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur. In an interview with Rusli Hashim, Yusof Ghani has responded to a question pertaining the use of Topeng as a representation of the search for a Malaysian identity: "I used masks for my comments on we human tend to wear masks to portray to people a desirable us and hide our true selves behind them. Hypocrisy of sort but not necessarily for evil reasons. Maybe a question of identity. Maybe we wear different masks for different reasons. Like being the live-wire among friends, no-nonsense type to our spouses, and perhaps for some, the great-romantics to their secret lovers, and so on. Touching on the issue of Malaysian identity, that's the least of the reason on my developing the Topeng Series paintings even though I thought the motif was also interesting in making a cultural statement. Whilst formalistically I'm an abstract expressionist painter influenced greatly by the works of de Kooning, my professor Tom Nakashima at Catholic University in Washington DC kept reminding me that I cannot run away from the fact that I'm still Asian. It's painted all over - the choice of colours, the brush works and whatever." Yusof Ghani was awarded a scholarship to study at George Mason University, USA. He graduated with a BFA (Graphic Art) in 1981 and pursued his MFA (Fine Art) at Catholic University in Washington in 1983. Before his American studies, he had worked as an artist-illustrator (Agriculture Ministry, 1967), an instructor (Fisheries Institute, Penang, 1971) and a graphic artist (RTM, 1977). An exquisite orchestration of poetic colours was used to represent a harmonious pair from the iconic Topeng Series. The subject of the paintings refers to the honorary titles of Datuk and Datin. Expressive contours made with lyrical brushstrokes forming the salient features of the mask were enhanced by strong contrasts of vivid colour. Inspired by the masks of the Kenyah and Kayan communities in Sarawak, Yusof Ghani translates the theme of spirituality onto his iconic paintings of masks. In these trio of paintings, the artist employs expressive black lines and painterly gestures to convey movement and powerful emotion. An exquisite palette of yellow, purple, orange and red hues enhances the dynamic arrangement of forms concentrated in the center. It's more diabolical for one to plot alone than to conspire with others, where one is vulnerable to betrayal. Then again, everyone is one's own worse enemy. Hero or villain, it all depends on the character of the wearer. In the end, the most Machiavellian will get all the spoils. Wearing mask conceals one's intention though in ritual dances, the persona of the mask worn would manifest the seance drama until it's over. Yusof Ghani's Topeng started innocuously enough after a group trip with students to Sarawak, where he was fascinated by the masks of the Kayan and the Kenyah tribes. It got more grotesque visages after a visit to South Africa in 1994.

A phalanx of heads stands like ancestral guardians reminiscent of the moai megaliths of Easter Islands, although the Topeng Series was inspired by Yusof Ghani's group trip with students to Sarawak where he was fascinated by the rituals of the Dayak masks (hudoq) of the Kayan and the Kenyah, of which the intrinsic value is to protect against evil spirits. They get an emotive and symbolic quality when rendered as grimaces concealing real intentions. Yusof Ghani had even shown his Topeng at the Takashimaya Gallery in Singapore, and at the Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco in 1997.

Biring, which manifests the practice of cock-fighting (berlaga ayam), is all about aggression and violence, between two contenders, out for the kill as the spurs are fitted with gaffs or sometimes laced with poison. Though a one-to-one combat, the trajectory of movement depicted is circular with the thrust of striking at the most vulnerable point of the adversary. Once pushed into the ring (wantilan), it's a survival do-or-die game. Even if one gets cold feet and wants to escape, there is no way out but to confront the adversary with all its might. Biring was first unveiled at the Wei-Ling Gallery in Kuala Lumpur in March 2007. Though cockerels are the protagonists, the moral lesson is applicable to Man or even countries. This is a rare masterpiece of absolute quality. In Tari Series known for complex but discernible figures interacting in sinuous movements, a phalanx of boxy barriers offers a restraining element to the central blob of red and the more ambiguous goings-on in the peripheral white spaces. It comes from the first tranche starting in 1985, actually earlier since when he was studying at the Catholic University in Washington in 1983. It looks unusually more like an obstacle course of enmeshed forms circumscribed somewhat by an open L-shaped perimeter, and with the white forms more fragmentary. The first Tari Series exhibition was unveiled at Galeri Citra, Kuala Lumpur, in 1989. Yusof Ghani started out doing Art-related jobs for 10 years without formal education. He was artist-illustrator at the Agriculture Ministry (1967), instructor in the Fisheries Institute, Penang (1971) and a graphic artist at Radio-Television Malaysia (1977). YUSOF GHANI : Siri Segerak, 2004

    Est: RM12,000 - RM22,000

Yusof Ghani’s paintings, according to many, have shifted from something dark and mysterious to take the air of something cheery and elegant. However, the artist himself said that his social commentaries did not change despite the change of atmosphere. It still had social remarks. He also said life is a bit like the lives of humans. Purposeless and unorchestrated at times, but it brings a lot of pleasure. This social commentary was brought to canvas, based on his studies on human behaviour teamed with lines, colours and motion. The end-result of a seamless flow of lovely colours amalgamating with one another was not intentionally meant to look aesthetic and flowing. The initial lines and sketches were rough, chaotic and arbitrary, to portray the human behaviour of being wild and free.
