Rivers are commonly known as a symbol of life, even a source of inspiration with the depiction of a stream of thought or consciousness, or purifying properties as seen using white hues. In Yellow River, the entire surface is painted in a smooth chromatic yellow colour intercepted with an interplay of dynamic forms. Rafiee Ghani’s artworks are just as colourful as he is and he is well known in the local fine arts sphere for his lyrical abstract and contemporary paintings. The artist’s style can be associated with French paintings of the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially those of Post-Impressionists, the Nabis and the Fauves. This kinship reveals a continuous juxtaposition of Western and contemporary Malaysian paintings since the 1930’s. His artworks aren’t easy to miss for their loud, dynamic use of colours and strokes that make his style particularly distinctive and emotive. Those who collect his art appreciate the spontaneity yet mastery of his visual expression. The strong colours and joyful tone are also distinctive, and ultimately, the works are evergreen due to the timeless nature of his themes. This painting, named ‘Night Walker I’, departs from his abstract norm to illustrate a real work which sees a child striking a pose, joyful and carefree in what seems like a garden or play area. Rafiee Ghani injects his colourful hallmark into the piece.

It's a melange with many, many cell-like pictorial schisms either independent of or connecting to a wider scheme, but with a laidback subdued air, almost soporific. Yawn, the world goes round and round still. Inertia is nothing static, and death may not be the end-all after all, as new growth sprouts in multi-directions and profusions in the cycle of renewal. The uneasy balance of crowdedness is a perpetual strife in itself. For money, fame and for love. There is so so much resonance in the eternity of silence, and hope. A poetic scene which looks out into the distance at the orange tree and landscape, using warm and exotic hues of colour. The feeling of space is expressed through broad areas of colour, harmoniously conflated with dense rhythmic patterns consisting of lines and shapes. The effect of light and space with lavish hues gives this work a tranquil and romantic quality. Rafiee Ghani draws great inspiration from his frequent travels around the world, especially to less hospitable terrain in Central, Western and Southeast Asia, apart from Europe and the United States. He was educated at the De Vrije Academic, Voor Beeldende Kunst, The Hague (1980) before returning to retake his Diploma at the Mara Institute of Technology, 1985 (majoring in Printmaking). He also won 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Art Open in 1994. He had taught at his alma mater, ITM, and in the Seychelles, from 1991 to 1993. Rafiee delves into the interior of a room, with the presence of a lady reading by an open window leading towards the garden. Attention is drawn to the table, where an intricate porcelain vase decorated with floral motifs is illuminated with sunlight. He contrasts the light colours of the table and pastel shades of the porcelain with vivid dark reds and purples of the interior walls, adding depth to the composition. The atmosphere of a tranquil sunlit day is portrayed here in warm hues of colour. Rafiee Ghani (b. 1962) Oriental Room On The West Coast, 1998

          Est: RM22,000 - RM40,000

There's a tropical oriental touch about the room in Rafiee Ghani's West Coast peregrinations in the United States during the late 1990s, particularly in California and Oregon. Wherever the bohemian traveller-artist goes, it's nice to have certain personal utensils around like a trestle and a tea-cup, to give him a sense of ‘home', though what looks like crayons are scattered all over the gaudy red polka-dotted black carpet. A dark veneer pervades in a black backdrop, maybe the lighting is subdued. The infused Intimism provides an exotic aura. The items displayed reveal somewhat the artist's activity around the room like a diary, like the low-rack bookshelf with books he might have picked up during his travels. Rafiee Ghani draws great inspiration from his frequent travels around the world, especially to less hospitable terrain in Central, Western and Southeast Asia, apart from Europe and the United States. Rafiee Ghani is renowned for his brilliant interior domestic scenes of still-life objects, plants and flowers in vibrant colours. The artist once quoted, that to him these are mere symbols of everyday objects that surround us, bringing with them a deep sense of comfort that are frequently forgotten or taken for granted in our everyday life. His interiors examine the qualities of space and environment, with balanced arrangement of elements and textures, complemented with floral arrangements. Rafiee Ghani is one of the most well-travelled and cosmopolitan artists, on land, traversing central and western Asia, besides Europe and the United States, all adding to his visual colour bank which he synthesizes in his works. He got a degree overseas first, at the De Vrije Academic, Voor Bildeende Kunst, The Hague (1980) before returning to retake his Diploma, Mara Institute of Technology, 1985, (majoring in Printmaking trained under Ponirin Amin). Est: RM9,000 - RM16,000

Rafiee Ghani's iconic compositions depict intimate objects in a home. The domestic objects are enveloped by soft, glimmering light passing through an open window. A dreamlike quality is felt in the colourful flower arrangements, translucent containers, and luscious bouquets found on the table. Rafiee's interest in depicting interior spaces is evident here, interpreted with the use of vibrant colours, bold brushstrokes, lines, and textures. The captivating blooms consisting of pinks, orange, and yellows are complemented with the dark green foliage, reflecting his choice of brilliant colours. In 1984 and 1985, Rafiee Ghani set his name in lights when he consecutively won the Minor Award in the Young Contemporary Artists competition, and he showed it was no fluke when he again snared the Minor Award in the 'adult' Salon Malaysia (1991). Rafiee Ghani (b. 1962) Still Life With Melon, 1999

          Est: RM13,000 - RM23,000

Still Life With Melon features domestic still life objects which include furniture, fruits, and utensils. It presents Rafiee's ability to re-interpret spaces through stylised forms, dynamic shapes, and spontaneous brushwork. The artist's dominant use of blue in the painting creates a dynamic contrast between the appealing colours of the blossoming garden, seen through an open window. An enchanting rendition of an interior space from the artists mind, this work captures the living spaces of a home rendered in multiple perspectives, unified into a coherent image with abundant colours. He followed up with a MA (Fine Prints) at the Manchester Polytechnic, England, in 1987. His major awards are the Minor Award in the Salon Malaysia (1991), twice in the Young Contemporary Artists competition (1984 and 1985), and one of the Juror's Award in the Malaysian chapter of the Philip Morris Asean Art Award in 1994. He also won 2nd Prize in the Malaysian Art Open in 1994. He had taught at his alma mater, ITM, and in the Seychelles, from 1991-1993.
