            Est: $3,000 - $4,000

Inscribed "Mlle. Damia. Gesmar" on verso. Unfinished costume sketch on verso. DAMIA (Marie-Louise Damien, 1889-1978) was a singer in the French chanson réaliste tradition, which is to say that she sang about dark, earthbound, working-class subjects. The stars of that style, which had its beginnings before the first World War and lasted until after the second, were nearly all women, including Édith Piaf, the rough-and-tumble Fréhel, the ravaged Nitta-Jo, the disillusioned Lucienne Delyle, the flirtatious Mistinguett, the stentorian Suzy Solidor. Damia was called la tragédienne, and she embodied the role with her unflinching demeanor, her upward gaze, her invariable black sheath (an article of clothing she bequeathed to subsequent generations of torch singers), and her remarkable voice.

W/C on paper by Charles Geismar dated 1928. Gesmar was born in Nancy in 1900 to a Jewish family. He attended the drawing School of Applied Arts of Auguste Vallin, and at the outbreak of the Great War, the Geismar(born name) family sought refuge in Paris. Here in early 1915, Charles met Mlle Andrée Spinelly, the famous actress-dancer who was enthusiastic about his work and asked him to design her costumes, previously created by the couturier Paul Poiret. Gesmar also designed for "L’Arciduc," a show at the Folies Bergere in October 1916 and provided illustrations for "La Baionette," "La Vie Parisienne," and "Fantasio" and "Le Rire." Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: CHARLES GESMAR (1900-1928) SIZE: 45 1/2 x 61 5/8 in./116 x 157 cm PRINTER: Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris DESCRIPTION: This wry image of Mistinguett plays on her legendary performance style involving luxurious flirtation with the viewer. It's also a testament to the seamless collaboration between the showgirl and her costume-designer artist, the young prodigy Charles Gesmar, who designed thousands of costumes and 55 posters for her. Note the identical hue of coral upon wrist-bauble, nails, and lips; the lapis lazuli upon her finger, and in her eye shadow; the emerald upon her ring finger, and in her eyes; the black pearls and Mistinguett's mascara. Peek-a-boo, the colors say: I see you. (Art Deco; Music; Cabaret)

ARTIST: CHARLES GESMAR (1900-1928) SIZE: 48 x 63 in./122 x 160 cm PRINTER: Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris DESCRIPTION: Well there's a looker! Gesmar seems to have (artistically) cheated on Mistinguett by stepping out with Simone Dulac for a moment, bringing his characteristic lines, baubles, and adornments to fashion an image projecting flirtatiousness, eroticism, and a knowing wit. She's shown in the role of Micheline in the play Amours Délices in a somewhat idealized form. Other posters by Adrien Barrère, as well as contemporary photos, portray her much as she was: a comic character actress, rather than a showgirl starlet, with parts in the comedies Je Suis un Homme Perdu (I Am a Lost Man) and Le Loup Garou (The Werewolf). As such, this marvelously evocative lithograph is also quite rare. (Art Deco; Theatre)
