Mark Gertler Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1891 - d. 1939

Mark Gertler (9 December 1891 – 23 June 1939), born Marks Gertler, was a British painter of figure subjects, portraits and still-life.

His early life and his relationship with Dora Carrington were the inspiration for Gilbert Cannan's novel Mendel.[1] The characters of Loerke in D. H. Lawrence's Women in Love,[2] and Gombauld in Aldous Huxley's Crome Yellow were based on him.

Marks Gertler was born on 9 December 1891 in Spitalfields, London, the youngest child of Polish Jewish immigrants, Louis Gertler and Kate "Golda" Berenbaum.[4] He had four older siblings: Deborah (b. 1881), Harry (b. 1882), Sophie (b. 1883) and Jacob "Jack" (b. 1886).

In 1892 his parents took the family to his mother's native city, Przemysl, Austria-Hungary (now Poland), where they worked as innkeepers.[5] Though Louis was popular with his customers, mainly Austrian soldiers, the inn was a failure.[5] One night without telling anyone Louis simply left for America (c.1893) in search of work. He eventually sent word to Golda telling her that once he was settled she was to bring the children to live with him there.[5] However, this venture also failed and his family never joined him in America.

Instead Louis returned to Britain, and had his family join him in London in 1896, when Marks' forename was anglicised as "Mark".[6]

From an early age Gertler showed signs of a great talent for drawing. On leaving school in 1906, he enrolled in art classes at Regent Street Polytechnic. Unfortunately, due to his family's poverty, he was forced to drop out after a year, and in December 1907 began working as an apprentice at Clayton & Bell, a stained glass company.[7] He disliked his work there and rarely spoke of it in later years.[7] While there he attended evening classes at the Polytechnic. In 1908 Gertler was placed third in a national art competition; this inspired him to apply for a scholarship from the Jewish Education Aid Society (JEAS)[A] to resume his studies as an artist.[8] The application was successful. Upon the advice of the prominent Jewish artist William Rothenstein, in 1908 he enrolled at the Slade School of Art in London. During the four years he spent at the Slade, Gertler was a contemporary of Paul Nash, Edward Wadsworth, C. R. W. Nevinson, Stanley Spencer and Isaac Rosenberg, among others.

During his time at the Slade, Gertler met the painter Dora Carrington, whom he pursued relentlessly for many years.[9] His obsessive love for Carrington is detailed in his published letters (see bibliography below) and in Sarah MacDougall's book Mark Gertler. It is also represented in the feature film Carrington (1995). His love for Carrington was unrequited, and she spent most of her life living with the homosexual author Lytton Strachey, with whom she was deeply in love. Carrington's unconventional relationship with Strachey, of whom Gertler was extremely jealous, and her eventual marriage to Ralph Partridge, destroyed her equally complex relationship with Gertler.[10] He had been so distraught when he learned of Carrington's marriage that he tried to purchase a revolver, and threatened to commit suicide.

GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) British painter. A scarce A.L.S., Mark, to the verso of a colour picture postcard featuring a reproduction of a painting by Rubens, Paris, 1932, to his aunt, Annie Gertler. The artist writes, in full, ‘I heard from Minnie that Harry is better. I am very glad. I hope all goes well still. I will phone when I return to London. Love to all’. Together with a few pieces of unsigned printed ephemera comprising two different invitation cards to exhibitions of Gertler’s works at The Leicester Galleries and Whitechapel Art Gallery in London and a small 8vo catalogue of the New Year Exhibition of Pictures, Drawings and Sculpture by Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Artists at The Leicester Galleries in London, January 1954, featuring works by L. S. Lowry, Ford Madox Brown, Frank Brangwyn, Amedeo Modiglaini, Augustus John, Graham Sutherland, Henry Moore, Stanley Spencer, Wyndham Lewis, Paul Signac, Alfred Sisley, Duncan Grant, Walter Sickert, Terry Frost, John Piper, Ben Nicholson, Edgar Degas and Mark Gertler amongst others. Further including a series of unsigned incomplete autograph letters and notes by Valentine Dobree (1894-1974, Indian-born English artist, associated with the Bloomsbury Group and the lover of Gertler), four pages, 8vo, Richmond, n.d., to Mark Gertler, in ink and pencil. Dobree commences the first page of one letter ‘Terms like the “aura of my disfigured mentality” and the “rigidity of puritanical labels” occur to me as the memory of my first confused correspondence sweeps into my mind like a dark cloud which flashed thunder……’ further writing ‘I experienced the fever & madness of love, then the idyllic strain of fanciful pleasure, which shocked me out of myself with its sweetness & unrealism. I descended to earth filled with the fright of you’, and also adding a note in the margin, ‘I know I never ought to right (sic) like this to you because you do not love me but you can decide for yourself whether you want me or not’. The other pages state, in part, ‘The unconscious growth of nature creates shapes of life with an unpremidated (sic) spontanity (sic)….The Artist in you is mostly unconscious if it exists at all….sex is definitely unconscious liquid in the mind poisoning the grey matter…..I don’t think anybody else has felt love like I have. It is because I have suppressed myself to such an extent that it has burst upon me…..’ Some age wear and creasing, particularly evident to Gertler’s postcard (which also has the postage stamp neatly removed), and a few small tears and areas of paper loss, FR to generally G, 8

Many of his paintings are imbued with a strong sense of poise and introspection, and in this sense, Adolescence is a great example of the artist’s output, with a contemporary review of this work in The Spectator noting that it was ‘a composition of striking originality’. Mark Gertler was encouraged to join the Slade School of Art in 1908 by the prominent Jewish artist William Rothenstein, where he studied alongside Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Edward Wadsworth and C.R.W. Nevinson, among others.  In the early 1920s Gertler travelled to Paris, where he encountered the work of the Parisian avant-garde. The influence of this trip can be perceived in the soft, rounded form of this painting’s classically-inspired female nude, which recalls the style adopted by Picasso at the time (MacDougall, p.212). Gertler’s work was exhibited regularly, including with the London Group (to which he was elected in 1915) and yearly at the Goupil Gallery in the 1920s. This work was purchased from this gallery in 1923 by its previous owners, the Ridley Family, for £60. The same family also purchased the Creation of Eve directly from the artist in 1915. Gertler’s works are found in public collections including the Glasgow Museums, the Tate Galleries and the Arts Council Collection at the Southbank Centre. This lot is accompanied with a copy of a letter from Sir Jasper Ridley’s son confirming the Ridley family’s ownership. Please refer to department for condition report Held in a hand gilded moulding frame with oval aperture and hand-tooled spandrels, possibly original to the making of the work. Gesso and gilt surface is lifting in various places. Very minor surface mark across the date at top of the painting. Very minor areas of frame rubbing to the edges of the canvas. Unlined and on original wooden stretcher. Under inspection with UV lamp, there is evidence of older retouching on the body and possibly centre left and right, generally under the varnish.

  • GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) British Painter.
    Aug. 15, 2019

    GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) British Painter.

    Est: £200 - £300

GERTLER MARK: (1891-1939) British Painter. Together with an original sepia 4 x 5.5 photograph of Gertler standing outdoors in a full length pose accompanied by the writers and academics Hewy Levy, Walter J. Turner, Edward Arthur Milne, Ralph Hodgson, J. W. N. Sullivan and Samuel S. Koteliansky, who are seated and standing in two rows alongside the artist. The photograph, apparently taken in London in 1928, appears to be signed by several of the individuals to the verso (although not by Gertler himself). Also including a few pieces of unsigned printed ephemera comprising two different invitation cards to exhibitions of Gertler’s works at The Leicester Galleries and Whitechapel Art Gallery in London and a small 8vo catalogue of the New Year Exhibition of Pictures, Drawings and Sculpture by Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Artists at The Leicester Galleries in London, January 1954, featuring works by L. It is because I have suppressed myself to such an extent that it has burst upon me…..’Some age wear and creasing, particularly evident to Gertler’s postcard (which also has the postage stamp neatly removed), and a few small tears and areas of paper loss, FR to generally G, 9

Mark Gertler (British, 1891-1939) Reclining Nude

    Est: £5,000 - £7,000

Mark Gertler (British, 1891-1939) Reclining Nude signed and dated 'Mark Gertler 1930' (upper right)pencil and black crayon42 x 53.5cm (16 9/16 x 21 1/16in). Provenance: Acquired by the present owner in the early 1990sPrivate Collection, U.K.The model for the present work is one of the Dennis sisters (Antoinette and Celia), who both sat for Gertler in the 1930s. Celia was one of his two pre-eminent models in this period, particularly for a series of nudes including The Sonata (1934). In the foreground a floppy checked hat can be seen, one of several familiar studio props which featured in a number of works from the 1920s, most notably one of a half-draped nude with a musical instrument, known as The Japanese Violin (1926). The present work is closer in style to the Renoiresque nudes of the 1920s than the plainer, more monumental nudes of the late 1930s.We are grateful to Sarah MacDougall for her assistance in cataloguing this lot, which will be included in her forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the Artist's work. Sarah would like to hear from owners of any work by the Artist so that these can be included in this comprehensive catalogue.
