        Aug. 20, 2024

        MAP, South America, Gerritsz

        Est: $220 - $250

Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana. Hessel Gerritsz & Joannes de Laet, Guaiana sive Provinciae Intra Rio de las Amazonas atque Rio de Yviapari sive Orinoque, from Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien…, 1625 (circa). Black & White. Hessel Gerritsz was apprenticed to Blaeu as an engraver before starting his own business. He then was appointed Cartographer to the Dutch East India Company and subsequently held the same position in a newly formed West India Company. Although Gerritsz actually traveled to the area during his voyage to South America and the West Indies undertaken in 1628, this map obviously lacks first-hand knowledge, except along the coastline. The interior is dominated by the huge mythical lake Parime Lacus with the legendary city of El Dorado (Manoa, o el Dorado) on its shores. The map is beautifully engraved with decorative title and distance scale cartouches and a large compass rose. LITERATURE: Shirley (BL Atlases) G.LAET-1b #13.

Peru. Hessel Gerritsz & Joannes de Laet, Peru, from Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien…, 1630 (circa). Black & White. This great map is a foundation map for later Dutch maps of Peru. The map is the work of Hessel Gerritsz, one of the truly important Dutch cartographers of the 17th century. Most of his work was only done in manuscript and these maps, published by De Laet, are the only Gerritsz maps available to the collector today. The map vividly depicts the mountainous region and the large Lake Titicaca that is dotted with islands. A splendid strapwork title cartouche and compass rose adorn the map.

(Map - Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States) Nova Anglia, Novum Belgium et Virginia

        Est: $6,000 - $7,500

A Critically Important Map in the Cartographic Evolution of North America. Colonial New England & Mid-Atlantic United States. Hessel Gerritsz & Joannes de Laet, Nova Anglia, Novum Belgium et Virginia, from Nieuwe Wereldt ofte Beschrijvinghe van West-Indien…, 1630 (circa). Black & White. This scarce map places the Dutch settlements in their geographic context just five years after the founding of New Amsterdam; being the first printed map to use the names Manbattes (Manhattan), N. Amsterdam (New York), and Massachusets (Massachusetts). It is also the earliest acquirable map with an insular Manhattan, and to show any of the Great Lakes ( Grand Lac). The depiction of the coastal area between Chesapeake Bay and Cape Cod is by far the most accurate of the period. The map also includes an early and well-detailed inset of Bermuda. Decorated with a strapwork title cartouche and two compass roses. The map is the work of Hessel Gerritsz, one of the truly important Dutch cartographers of the 17th century. Gerritsz was cartographer to the Dutch East India Company and Johannes de Laet was the director of the Dutch West India Company. De Laet was a principal player in the founding of New Netherland and owned a large tract of land in the area of Albany. Both had access to surveys, documentation and information from Dutch colonists, which provided the basis for this fine early map.

HUDSON, Henry (d. 1611), et al. -- Hessel GERRITSZ (ca 1581-1632), editor. Descriptio ac delineatio geographica detectionis freti, sive, transitus ad Occusum, supra terras Americanas, in Chinam atq; Iaponem ducturi. Amsterdam: Ex officina Hessel Gerritsz, 1612. 4 o (197 x 154 mm). 24 (of 25 leaves; without first blank). Three engraved folding maps (map of Hudson's Bay with two tiny holes), woodcut of a ship on verso of title, woodcut of a reindeer-drawn sleigh on verso of C3. Late 19th-century blue morocco, red morocco doublures, edges gilt, by W. Pratt for Henry Stevens. THE FIRST PRINTED ACCOUNT OF HENRY HUDSON'S DISCOVERIES IN THE NORTHERN PART OF AMERICA AND THE FIRST MAP OF HUDSON BAY FIRST LATIN EDITION, first issue (the second issue had a variant title-page). The Dutch edition, entitled Beschryvinge van der Samoyeden landt in Tatierien, was published the same year and included the three maps here: the first of Hudson's Bay and adjacent territory, printed on two sheets; the second a double hemispheric map (second state, with "N. Albion" inserted in California and the Pacific coast extended north to the Strait of Anian); and the third of the northern part of Russia. The two leaves of Hudson's relation are bound after signature A, apparently matching the collation of the John Carter Brown copy not after the title-page as in the Church copy. Hudson's narrative describes his third and fourth voyages in search of a Northwest Passage. He had arrived in Arctic waters in 1610 determined to find the passage, and towards that end explored Hudson Bay. His crew mutinied and abandoned him in 1611, after which he returned to England. The text also prints the report of Fernandez de Quiros on his discovery of Terra Australis and that of Issac Massa on the countries to the north of Russia. The world map first appeared in Manoel de Figueiredo's Roteiro e Navegacao das Indias Occidentais Ithas, Lisbon, 1609). VERY RARE, ESPECIALLY IN GOOD CONDITION: The last copy sold at auction (save an imperfect copy with most of the Hudson's Bay map in facsimile) Sotheby's New York, 2 February 1985, lot 54; that copy had dampstaining and worming and the Hudson's Bay map had several separations along the folds. No copies of the Dutch edition of the same year are recorded in American Book Prices Current. Alden/Landis 612/54; Brunet III:358; Church 354 (also lacking A1); JCB (3) II:83; Sabin 33490; Shirley 278 ("In spite of its small size, [the world] map has been carefully drafted to incorporate the latest discoveries. There are notes on it relating to Hudson's discoveries in the northern parts of America and De Quiros' explorations in the Pacific... Hudson's Bay is delineated for the first time...").

Pascaert Vande Caribes Eylanden: curiooslyck betrocken, met Octroy vande Ho. Mo. Heeren de Staten Generael der vereenighde Nederlanden. [Amsterdam, 1631]. Engraved chart on vellum, hand-coloured in outline 737 x 520mm. Two compass roses, rhumb lines, scale-bars in Dutch, Spanish and English measures. (Small stain lower left corner, some slight surface soiling). ONE OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS IMPORTANT DUTCH CHART OF THE CARIBBEAN ON VELLUM. Gerritsz, Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher, was the official cartographer for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Amsterdam from 1617, and cartographer to the Dutch West India Company (WIC) from 1621. Using information gleaned from pilots' reports and annotated maps, Gerritsz would supply the companies with accurate, up-to-date manuscript charts. In 1628-1629 Gerritsz had joined the Zutphen, in the fleet which sailed to the Caribbean under the command of Adriaen Jansz Pater, and with the aid of manuscript maps, deroteros and sketches he was then able to produce this highly accurate chart of the islands. It became a model for many other maps of the Caribbean including Blaeu's Insulae Americanae, first published in the Novus atlas of 1634. Gerritsz also did maps of various other parts of the Americas, but the need for accurate West Indian charts was essential for the Dutch sugar trade that was just beginning. Gerritsz started his cover as an engraver working for Blaeu, and once on his own got the job of offical cartographer of the VOC, through the support of Petrus Plancius, over Blaeu. In this role he would work on numerous manuscripts. It seems most likely that this vellum chart would have been drawn up specifically as a gift to a senior offical of the WIC rather than for general circulation to the pilots of the company. The other known copy of this chart is held by the Bibliotheque Nationale (Bnf DCP Ge C 9070) and was probably retained by the French, after the VOC archives had been moved to Paris in the early 19th century.
