Artist Jean-Leon Gerome was a French painter from the 1840s until century’s end. Artist Jean-Leon Gerome was a member of the Institut de France, an officer in Legion d'honneur, and an honorary member of the British Royal Academy. He became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1864, holding the post for 39 years. He had great influence over other French painters, although he opposed the nontraditional styling of the Impressionists.
