    • Massive Divine Shepherdess with important Spanish Baroque frame of the period, Bernardo Llorente Germán (1680-1759), 18th century Spanish school
      Nov. 29, 2023

Massive Divine Shepherdess with important Spanish Baroque frame of the period, Bernardo Llorente Germán (1680-1759), 18th century Spanish school

      Est: €22,500 - €25,000

Oil on canvas. Measurements: 202 x 164 cm, framed measurements: 245 x 191 cm. (Seville, 1680-1759). Spanish painter. Trained in Seville alongside Cristóbal López, his work is part of a Murillo movement that in the last years of the 17th century and the first decades of the 18th continued to interpret and draw on the Andalusian master. Llorente's painting preserved in the Prado, La Divina Pastora, reveals such influences. In the inventories of 1814, this work was attributed to Bartolomé Esteban Murillo despite the very evident differences in quality. He is part of a current of devotion that made fortune in this period in the Andalusian capital, which contributed to making this iconography fashionable and spread throughout Spain. Llorente portrayed the Infante Don Felipe taking advantage of Philip V's stay in Seville, assuming the influence of the French court portraitist Jean Ranc. His famous trompe-l'oeil works stand out, for example, those preserved in the Musée du Louvre, a genre that experienced considerable development in Andalusia at this time. Private collection, Andalusia.

Attributed to BERNARDO LORENTE GERMÁN (Sevilla, Spain, 1685 – 1757). After Bartolomé Esteban MURILLO (Sevilla, 1617 – Cádiz, 1682). "St. Joseph with the Child".

      Est: €4,500 - €5,000

Attributed to BERNARDO LORENTE GERMÁN (Seville, 1685 - 1757). "Saint Joseph with Child". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured in the 19th century. Antique frame. Measurements: 106,5 x 82,5 cm; 119,5 x 95,5 cm (frame). This painting is a copy of the canvas currently conserved in the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid, a work from Murillo's workshop. The work shows Saint Joseph, identified by the flowering rod, seated with the Child on his lap, in a family scene full of tenderness typical of the Sevillian master. Until the Counter-Reformation, the figure of Saint Joseph was usually relegated to the background, as he was not accorded any theological importance. After Trent, however, his leading role as Jesus' protector during his childhood and as a guide during his youth was revived, and he is depicted here as such. In contrast to the tenderness, defencelessness and candour of the infant figure, Saint Joseph is presented as a monumental, typically Baroque figure, an impression that is reinforced by the pyramidal composition. Through this form of representation, the artist visually emphasises the decisive role of Jesus' putative father as protector. Formally, the work is fully in keeping with the naturalistic Baroque style, with a simple and clearly understandable composition, without anecdotal details to distract attention. Joseph and the Child appear in the foreground, occupying most of the pictorial surface, against a neutral, dark background. They are also strongly illuminated by the tenebrist light typical of this naturalistic school, an artificial and directed spotlight that falls directly on the faces and flesh tones of the figures, leaving the rest in semi-darkness, creating subtle shadows and expressive plays of chiaroscuro that model the volumes and reinforce the illusion of three-dimensionality so sought after in the Baroque period. Likewise, the chromaticism is that of the naturalist Baroque, a palette centred on earthy and carmine tones, with touches of white that illuminate the whole without stridency. This chromaticism is very different from that of the contemporary Classicist Baroque, which uses large, delicately balanced fields of classical colours. In contrast, the naturalists use warm colours that reflect the light and turn the scene depicted into an image closer to the viewer, seeking his identification with the figures or events narrated. Bernardo Lorente Germán began his training with his father, also a painter, and then studied with Cristóbal López. After completing his apprenticeship he was so far ahead of his teachers and became so highly regarded that when he travelled to Madrid he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the Infante Don Felipe. The work was so well received that Queen Isabella of Farnese gave him a series of prints by the French painter Charles Le Brun as a token of her gratitude. He was then asked to become the king's painter but Lorente declined the post as he did not wish to leave Seville. He was appointed an individual of merit by the San Fernando Royal Academy in 1756. In Seville he was known as "the painter of the Shepherdesses", as he painted the theme of the Divine Shepherdess on numerous occasions. He was also the main portraitist of Seville's aristocracy, with works that reflect the French taste prevailing at the time and which coexist with others clearly indebted to Murillo, whose cottony forms and pastel colours, which were also very beautiful, were in perfect harmony with the subject of which Ceán Bermúdez made Lorente Germán the creator, that of the Divina Pastora. His best-known works are kept in the Carthusian monastery in Jerez de la Frontera and are to be found in numerous churches in Úbeda and Baeza, as well as in Jaén cathedral, the Louvre Museum in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Seville. He also executed still lifes and genre scenes and became an accomplished master of the trompe l'oeil genre.
