Sergei Gerasimov (1885-1964) Sergey Vasilyevich Gerasimov was born 1885 in the Russian Mozhaysk. He received his education by the painter Konstantin Korovin. His early works show influences of the modern art. In the 1920s and 30s his art is characterized by motifs of social realism as they corresponded to the taste of the communist government. During this time he taught at the art school VChUTEMAS. Later, however, Gerasimov turned again to the modern trends. He was a member of the Russian Artists' Association, and was demoted from that position during Stalin reign, but shortly after Stalin's death became re-instated again. His works show influences of the Impressionists and modern art, yet this naturalistic landscape with a bridge was created at a time, when Gerasimov taught at the art school VChUTEMAS where he, according to the favor of the communist government, also maintained a style that will later be referred to as Social Realism. However, Gerasimov was open-minded, and therefore his works also were influenced by the modern art movements. The drawing is signed cyrillic. On verso at the corners with remains of adhesive tape (not striking through). The work is fixed and due to this slightly yellowed, otherwise the overall impression is very good. The paper measures 28 x 38.5 cm, the framed dimensions are 43 x 55 cm. The frame shows some traces of wear.
