Prachtvolle dunkelblaue geglätette Maroquineinbände auf 5 Bünden mit floralem goldgeprägten Mittelstück und Eckfleurons mit roten Lederintarsien. Rücken mit goldgeprägtem RTitel und floralen Vignetten mit Lederintarsien. Spiegel mit reicher Dublure und Marmorpapiereinlage. Im Schuber (minimal berieben und fleckig). Vicaire III, 133 u. Carteret III, 286. - Das wohl schönste Werk Grandville's in leuchtendem Kolorit mit Eiweiß gehöht. "In Les Fleurs animées, Grandville transforms into romantic heroins, most well-known flowers, whether they be the sensitive, cautious peach blossom, the hawthorn frightened by the gardener's pruner, the myosotis or the marigold, the dominant feature of this language of flowers is, as it should be, feminine modesty and grace, romantic pallor and romantic melancholy." (Vgl. Massin, La Lettre et l'image. S. 153. Libr. Forgeot. Cat. Grandville 2007 no. 93). - Gutes Exemplar in prachtvollen französischen Handeinbänden. French Bibliophily. - Bindings. - With 2 col. Wood engraved titles, 50 col. as well as 2 uncolor. steel engravings and numerous wood engraved vignettes by N. Maubert after Grandville. Splendid dark blue glazed morocco bindings on 5 frets with floral gilt centerpiece and corner fleurons with red leather inlays. Spine with gilt-stamped Spinetitles and floral vignettes with leather inlays. Endpapers with rich doublure and marble paper inlays. In the slipcase (only minimally rubbed and spotted). Probably the most beautiful work of Grandville in luminous coloration heightened with egg white. - Good copy in splendid French hand bindings.

Gérard In 1786 Gérard joined the studio of David in Paris where he was supposedly a favourite pupil. His greatest artistic success came during the reign of Napoleon. For his first commission he created a series of large historical paintings which are now located in the Palace of Versailles. In addition, Gérard was also the official painter of state portraits of the first Empire and historian to the Bonaparte family. Later, he was sponsored by Louis XVIII, who ennobled him in 1819. Since this painting is signed Baron Gérard, it is dateable between 1819 and 1837 when he died. Apart from the portraits of the Bonaparte family, the portraits of Isabey with his young daughter and also Madame Recamier, both in the Louvre, can be considered his most famous paintings.
