        • GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962) Toward eternity, Katya.
          Dec. 15, 2021

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962) Toward eternity, Katya.

          Est: €5,000 - €8,000

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Toward eternity, Katya. Signature and dated 1949 upper right. Bibliography: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varnia, Kibea, 2006, pp.84-135. This painting is an allegory of the death of the artist's sister Katya. He has painted her soul floating freely in space. The hands look somehow separate, as if they have a life of their own. This is no coincidence: the hands were in fact painted later, from life, with the artist's adopted daughter Virginia as the model. Katya's face has a blissul expression, and her eyes are closed, as if turned inward, towards the liberation of the long-suffering soul. In the distance, a stormy sea symbolizes life, a poetic return to the artist's birthplace. According to Professor Vassil Stoilov, this painting belongs to Boris Georgiev's later works; however, a description of it can be found in Geoirgiev's letter to Katya's classmate and friend Aspasia Doumanova. In that letter, the artist explained that he had created this work from a sketch done at Katya's death bed. In his notes, he wrote: ""It depicts my unforgettable sister Katya who died in Florence at age 19, during World War I, in 1917, after we had been compelled to leave the Alps by Trentino ( where our life had been happy) as they became the theatre of war atrocities. This sacred, extremely kind and talented creature died of sorrow over the immense injustice, horrors and barbarian wars in the world. In the last minutes of her life, her eyes already closed, she sensed that I was crying over our separation and she made an effort to look at me for the last time and said gently: "" Do not cry, brother, I am now happy to be in the abode of goodness and eternal harmony which we sought in vain in this world"". She then closed her eyes forever, with an expression of bliss and relief from suffering on her face. Crying, I made an effort to draw a small sketch of her expression, from which I later painted this work, ""Toward Eternity"". This loss is the greatest sorrow in my life, and it will follow me to the end of my days. The small sketch has been preserved in the artist's archive. It shows Katya's face in profile on her death bed. Measuring 10x5 cm, it is done on rough yellowish paper, and has been slightly damaged and repaired. Katya's spirit with a wreath of flowers in her hair can be seen in a 1935 drawing, where she is depicted together with the artist, as well as in ""The wanderer and his sister"", ""Portrait of the Sela Family"", (1924) ""Meeting with Pariahs in India"" (1935), and in two drawings in colour pencils and tempera on paper, both replicas of ""Meeting with Pariahs in India"" (1941). Boris Georgiev drew a number of sketches in preparation for the painting ""Toward eternity"". They show the stages of the image's idealization to its iconographic crystalisation as a trascendental vision. The painting is purported to exist in two version, the second one probably painted in the 1950s. About the latter Professor Vassil Stoilov writes that it is executed in the artist's typical fresco technique using a special primer, adding that the artist's last works are not significantly different from earlier ones and even show similaritites with the subject matter of the Alpine cycle. He mentions ""Toward Eternity"" as a typical example: ""a ghost flying in the universe, with drapes instead of wings fluttering behind the impetuous girl's shoulders"". Cm 81,50 x 60,50.

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Pandit Madan Mohan Malavia.. Signature and dated 1936. Provenance: Virginia Giacometti Piazzalunga Georgiev. Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, pp. 77 e 132. Interesting information about Pandit Madan Mohan Malavia, spiritual leader of the Brahmans, can be found in Boris Georgiev's publications from India. He relates how the Indian poetess Sarojini Naidu introduced him to Malavia, the founder of the Pan-Indian National University (the Hindu University) in Benares. Among Malavia's contributions to education was the inclusion of the Indian cultural tradition, its philosophy and arts, with a view to the preservation and the enrichment of the cultural heritage. In order to allow Indian young people to complete their studied in their home country instead of England, the university's curriculum was organized in Western style, but emphasis was placed on Sanskrit culture and traditional science. In this portrait, the artist sought to emphasize the characteristic Brahman symbol on the forehead, the subject's concentration - details expressing Malavia's spirituality. The image's dignity shows clearly that the subject belongs to the highest Hinduist caste. The artist left behind accurate information on the story of this portrait: ""A ware of Madan Malavia's negative attitude to art, I dared not make a drawing of the sick old man who was busy with issues of utmost significance. I was amazed by the deep interest and understanding in his words about art and that he shared my opinion of art's ethical mission in this world. He willingly agreed to sit for a sketch. He got out of bed, took a snow-white piece of cloth out of the drawer, with trembling hands made a turban around his head and put a sign on his forehead which undoubtedly had symbolical meaning for him. Pandit Madan Mohan Malavia insisted that I go with him to Benares and give a few lectures on the ethics of art and its role in the overall evolution of humankind. Unfortunately, the schedule of my trip in southern India prevented me from accepting that great honour"". The portrait is executed in Boris Georgiev's characteristic colour pencils technique on toned paper.. Cm 35,00 x 47,00.

Pubblication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, pp. 74 e 131. Boris Gerogiev made several portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi, thus immortalizing his deep friendship with the great Indian who always claimed that good and truth were the two mainstays of brotherhood. In all his lectures in Bulgaria, Italy and Brazil, the artist spoke of India and of his acquaintance with Pandit Mahatma Gandhi and his wife. His first notes on that acquaintance date back to 1931, when he sailed from Trieste to Bombay. Boris Georgiev also painted portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi in 1935 when he was invited to their home. The event was described in his notes and in letters to friends in Bulgaria. The portraits of Kasturba Gandhi is characterized by a great closeness to the original. It conveys the artist's reverence for the wisdom and strength of an extraordinary woman. More than twenty years later, Boris Georgiev still spoke of her with admiration: ""What a pure, exalted companion for a sage"". Cm 29,50 x 39,50.

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962) Young woman from Sangli.

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Young woman from Sangli.. Provenance: Virginia Giacometti Collection, Italy. Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, p. 76 e 132. During his stay in India, Boris Georgiev created a gallery of portraits of ordinary people. With his profound intuition, his art became the means of revealing the psychology of these humble and spiritually rich individuals. He worked ""from life"" and usually applied the ""most modest"" technique: drawing in colour pencils or sanguine ex tempore. He later painted some of the portraits, using his characteristic fresco technique, but on wood or fibreboard instead of walls. He made a complex and interesting combination of paints and primer for dry fresco, to be used in the so-called ""wet fresco"". Similarly to the ancient masters and artists of the East, he made his paints himself from mineral or earth pigments, powdered minerals and semi-precious stones. His paintings thus acquired the noble and lasting glow of natural paints and their unmatchable colours. This ancient principle was applied by the Lamaists and Buddhists for their sacred books. For the letters and the decoration, they used pigments made of seven components: gold, silver, iron, copper, pearl, emerald, and ruby. They also used a plastic primer in the books, sometimes with bas-relief technique for the covers and even for some of the illustrated pages. A traditional Indian instrument, the vina is usually used for the performance of popular melodies in India. It express authentically the Indian's deepest emotions. Boris Georgiev was unique in his ability to embody the music in the lines of his drawing, to express the mystery of noble spirituality and to lead the viewer into deep contemplation. A second version of this portrait, executed in the same technique and measuring 52x42 cm, also exists; it has never been exhibited. Cm 42,00 x 52,00.

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962) Meeting with Pariahs in India.

          Est: €5,000 - €8,000

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Meeting with Pariahs in India.. Signature and dated lower right 1935. Provenance: Virginia Giacometti Collection, Italy. Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, pp. 70-71 e 130. When he planned and created this work in the 1930s, Boris Georgiev had reached an important moment in his career, marking the second stage of his artistic develompent. By that time his art had been appreciated by both the critics and the public in Europe. Before embarking upon his trip to India, strongly influenced by his master Nicholas Roerich and by Kipling, he learned Sanskrit and Hindi. For five years he traveled all over India, meeting with members of the lowest caste - the pariahs- as well as with the privileged untouchables- the Brahmans and the Maharajas. With this allegorical work, Georgiev has expressed his compassion for the poorest caste in Indian society, relegated for millennia to a miserable life of extreme poverty and injustice. In ""Meeting with Pariahs in India"", also known as ""The sorrow of India"", the artist depicts himself among them, led by the spirit of his late sister Katya. In preparation for this composition, the artist had drawn a series of portraits of poor people, as well as self-portraits showing himself as a wanderer with a sack on his back, followed by Katya's spirit. In some sketches she is like a fairy-tale creature from an imaginary world, wearing a cloak and a wreath of daisies. In her image, idealization is brought to perfection: she is like an angel, her hands brought together in prayer, recalling Beatrice in Dante Alighieri's The Inferno. The landscape is monumental. Light falls through the heavy clouds on dozens of pariahs who pray and support each other, and also direct the viewer's attention to the foreground. In the distance, the imposing buildings of Kapurtala can be seen. The procession of suffering pariahs is filing towards us as if from infinity, ending in the foreground with the allegorical figure of ""Mother India"", kneeling and weeping. The light of the sunset behind the clouds pierces the darkness, creating a special mystical atmosphere of sorrow and resignation similar to a biblical scene. The artist wrote in his note that the work was created during his visits to Maganwadi Ashram in Wardha, where thousands of miserable pariahs came to seek solace. There Georgiev showed this painting to Gandhi for the first time, and Gandhi gave it a name in Sanskrit: Daridra narajanako namaskar. Georgiev wrote that it was difficult to translate but that it did correspond to the content of the painting: ""we bow to divine poverty and sorrow (which will raise us to God)"". Dozens of sketches for this work show the artist's complex process in taking his monumental plan from sketches of separate faces to a completed composition. It has been preserved in two versions. The first one, preserved in Boris Georgiev's archive and lacking the temple, is a drawing measuring 59x79 cm executed in his well-known colour pencils technique. The second version is the better-known ""Meeting with Pariahs in India"", in the collection of the National Art Gallery in Sofia and measuring 67x85 cm. In both this painting and ""The Wanderer and His Sister"", an event is transformed into a poem of human compassion. As critics have observed, the artist placed the highest value on the work's moral message. Cm 78,50 x 59,50.

          Est: €2,000 - €4,000

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Portrait of Pariah.. Signature lower right. Provenance: Virginia Giacometti Collection, Italy. Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, p. 129. In his notes from India, Boris Georgiev wrote: ""During my frequent visits to Gandhi in his ashram in Wardha, thousands of these martyrs would come there every evening to find a little solace in their miserable life, in the company of the apostle of good who was fighting for their liberation, and was killed for that by the Brahmans. This sketch shows the face of an old pariah. I saw him one evening while I was sitting near Gandhi; I saw his moving expression of kindness, his eyes turned to God, seeking solace from his suffering"". The image of this old poverty-strickem man, whose life was supported only by the spirit, became part of the composition of Georgiev's famous painting ""Meeting with Pariahs"". The tragic face embodies the social inequality and suffering which had been dividing people in Indian society for centuries. Lytadmil Stoyanov offers this interpretation of the work: "" In meeting with Pariahs we can see the tragic image of man in a tipically feudal country such as India, left to a life worse than the cattle's, who by the law of Manu cannot drink water from a well but only from a puddle""- in the artist's eyes, this man is a saint. This is apparent from the affection with which he has depicted the pariah, without the torn clothes of povertym with just the expression on the face, heavily wrinkled and unshaven, and most of all eyes, which reveal a centuries-old sorrow, helplessness and despair"". The light in the eyes of the poor Indian peasant and the serenity of his face bring to mind the icons of the holy martyrs. A portrait made from life reveals the mystery of faith which transcends the temporary hardships and suffering in the material world. Boris Georgiev writes of this portrait: ""A sketch I made in Gandhi's ashram of a poor pariah. The eyes of that brother of ours expressed his state of mind with the same expression as the crucified Christ who, dying on the cross, forgave his exectutioners. Gandhi cried when I showed him the drawing, amazed and moved by the fact that I had put the immense sorrow of the Indian people into a small sketch. I used this sketch later for the composition ""Meeting with Pariahs in India"". This work, seminal in the formation of the ideas which united the artist's works of the Indian cycle, exists in two versions. The first is in sanguine on cardboard, measures 44x33 cm, and is signed diagonally in cursive at lower right: ""Boris Georgiev of Varna"". The second is a fresco on fibreboard measuring 45x35 cm. . Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, pp. 96 e 140. This is the one of the later version of the painted portrait of the renowned Italian sculptor Angelo Zanelli, created as a sign of lasting friendship. In the catalogue to his Milan exhibition, Boris Georgiev wrote: ""The great Italian sculptor who created in Rome a large and important monument, ""The Altar of Fatherland"". Georgiev has followed the traditions of Italian Renaissance portraits in order to express his sculptor's hands and face. In the portrait, Zanelli is working on a large slab of marble, and dozens of figures from the monument can be seen in the background. The subject emanates the spirituality and inner power of a person who, like Georgiev, has conquered matter and has transformed it according to his will and artistic concept. The portrait can be interpreted as the revelation of spiritual life and creative talent through art itself. The renowned critic Pietro Scarpa describes Boris Georgiev's Italian portraits as especially interesting because of their ""fusco buono"" technique and because of their continuation of the Renaissance tradition of linking image and background in a compositional construction that creates the illusion of space. Georgiev's overall technique was different and unique because it combined a number of techniques: gouache, water colours, tempera, colour pencils and a special primer. ""This talented artist, who is able to catch all constructive details in the faces, uses only those he deems the most necessary. In the superb analyses he makes of his portrait subjects, he refrains from burdening the faces with needless features. Moreover, he knows how to convey the emotions which make one model different from another"". The friendship between Georgiev and Zanelli, two great artists and personalities, left its mark for eternity. In Florence, the marble tombstone of the artist and his sister Katya features a relief of Georgiev's ""Weltschmerz"" engraved by his friend, the sculptor Zanelli. Cm 60,00 x 82,20.

Portrait of Albert Einstein, lithograph by Boris Georgiev. Signed and dated by Einstein (in pencil, ";A. Einstein 1929";) and by the artist (";Boris Georgiev / Berlin V - 1929";). Berlin, May 1929. The Bulgarian artist Boris Georgiev (1888-1962), born in Varna, studied art at the school headed by Nicholas Roerich in Saint Petersburg and was deeply affected by his style and spiritual world. Later he studied in Munich and after graduating, travelled European countries. During the late 1920s, when he was staying in Berlin, he met Albert Einstein for the first time. Einstein was impressed with Georgiev's works and helped him organize an exhibition at the Schulte gallery in Berlin. In gratitude, Georgiev made a portrait of Einstein and gave it to him as a gift. After receiving the portrait, Einstein wrote to Georgiev: ";Your art made me feel in those spheres, where far from hardships and sufferings, the soul finds peace. After a long contemplation of the portrait you made, I felt the need to thank you with all my heart"; (see: Roopa-Lekha, volume 52, published by All-India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, 1981. p. 60). During the years 1931-1936, Georgiev lived in India, learned about its culture, met the leaders Mahatama Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru and even painted their portraits. These portraits, as well as the many other portraits Georgiev painted during his travels around the world, are unique in their soft colors and airiness which give them a dream-like quality; Georgiev drew his inspiration from Renaissance art and the spiritual doctrines he discovered throughout his life. 62X49.5 cm leaf. Mounted on a thin card mount. Good condition. Tears and minor blemishes to margins (not affecting the portrait). Traces of framing.

GEORGIEV BORIS (1888 - 1962). Happiness hut. Publication: Plamena Dimitrova Racheva, Boris Georgiev of Varna, Ed. Kibea, p. 29 e 112. Collection Virginia Giacometti, Italy. The landscape depicts the small hut in the Venetian Alps where the artist lived for several years with his younger sister Katya. In the introduction to his 1929 Berlin exhibition, Boris Georgiev told the following story: "Then I built myself a hut in the Venetian Alps so that I could stay forever with the shepherds, the peasants and the beasts, to make my living with my two hands, from the earth, through hard work. I was hoping that I would thus become free from the awful slavery to society, for society regards the artist as a beggar, so that when the beggar starves to death, the society may profit from the works of his suffering. It almost seemed that I had reached the peak of my happiness a mortal man could have in this world, I seemed to have attained, particularly when my sister, a creature of heavenly kindness and spirituality, joined me to share my new life. Although younger than me, it was she who showed me the possibility for a purer life, for spiritual and moral beauty, and the way that led to them". Information about the Happiness hut is found in a 1962 letter from Nikola Soychev of Pazardjik to writer Mihail Kremen. The letter reads: "In one of his drawings Boris Georgiev depicted his sister Katya shoveling snow in the yard of their snow-covered hut. The hut in question was built by Georgiev himself in Monte Lefre, near Trentino in the Alps, where he has been living with the shepherd for about two years. Looking at the drawing, one would say that Georgiev is a sympathetic recorder of his contemporary life. He documents each day with a perfect picture. Katya takes a keen interest in poetry and music. Boris Georgiev himself occasionally plays the mouthorgan and the piano. He is impressed by the music of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovscky. He also loves flowers". The reviews of the artist's exhibition in Brazil mention that it was in mountain home that the artist adopted "the secret teaching of spiritual seclusion amidst the mysteries of nature". It was here that Georgiev created such insightful paintings as "The Eternal Road", "Ave Natura", "Winter", "Contemplation", "Ecce home", and the "Weltschmerz" triptych that he described as his autobiography, as the diary of his soul.
