GEORGE GERSHWIN Autograph musical quotation signed ‘George Gershwin’ from

            Est: £2,000 - £3,000

GEORGE GERSHWIN Autograph musical quotation signed ‘George Gershwin’ from the Second Rhapsody George Gershwin "GERSHWIN, George (1898-1937). Autograph musical quotation signed ‘George Gershwin’ from the Second Rhapsody, 15 October 1933. "Rare autograph musical quotation from the Second Rhapsody, which Gershwin considered his best work to date. Two bars on a single stave, titled ‘2nd Rhapsody’ with the direction ‘andante’, warmly inscribed to Boston Symphony contrabassoonist Boaz Piller ‘In memory of many happy days (and nights) in Boston’. "While Rhapsody in Blue was often requested in this form, examples of musical quotations from Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody have rarely surfaced at auction. Originally titled Rhapsody in Rivets, ‘for he had hit on the idea of a “rivet” theme to convey a musical image of Manhattan,’ the premiere of the piece was performed in Boston by the Boston Symphony Orchestra on 29 January 1932. Gershwin’s inscription to Boston Symphony contrabassoonist Boaz Piller, written the following year, no doubt refers to memories of the premiere performance. Although the Second Symphony was widely regarded as less successful than the first, Gershwin was proud of the piece, commenting ‘“In many respects, such as orchestration and form, it is the best thing I have ever written.”’ Schwartz, 201. "Octavo sheet, 165 x 139 mm (slight show-through from another signature verso, faint matt-burn); housed in a clothbound folder. Provenance: Boaz Piller (Boston Symphony contrabassoonist; presentation inscription from the composer).

GEORGE GERSHWIN Typed letter signed 'George Gershwin' to his music teacher

            Est: £1,500 - £2,500

GEORGE GERSHWIN Typed letter signed 'George Gershwin' to his music teacher Joseph Schillinger George Gershwin "GERSHWIN, George (1898-1937). Typed letter signed 'George Gershwin' to his music teacher Joseph Schillinger, 132 East 72nd Street, New York, 16 May 1935. "Gershwin writes to his music teacher, describing his progress with Porgy and Bess, only four months before the opera premiered in Boston: ‘I have finished the music for the opera and also the orchestrations of the first act and am now working on the second act scoring, but it goes slowly.’ Gershwin tentatively proposes continuing music lessons with Schillinger in New York during the summer of 1935 and expresses his desire to ‘clear up the amount outstanding’ on an organ loan. "From 1932 to c.1936, Gershwin studied composition and orchestration with Joseph Schillinger, a Russian-born composer, music theorist and composition teacher who worked with many of the most popular musicians of the day, including Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Charles Previn. There is some debate over the level of Schillinger’s influence and his involvement with Gershwin’s compositions during this period, particularly Porgy and Bess. According to Charles Schwartz’ 1979 biography of Gershwin, ‘Even though the completed scores of all of Gershwin’s orchestrated pieces written after the Rhapsody… are in his hand, there is a good chance that they were orchestrated with some help… The orchestrated score for Porgy and Bess is a case in point. All three acts of the opera, beautifully written and well orchestrated, are in Gershwin’s hand. Solely on the basis of the finished product, one would assume that he had not been helped in any way. Yet there is evidence that he was aided in his orchestration by Joseph Schillinger. According to Vernon Duke, he and George, as well as Ira… all shared a house on Fire Island during the summer of 1935. All summer long, Duke claims, Gershwin saw Schillinger three times weekly for help in orchestrating the opera.’ Schwartz goes on to quote the present letter, noting that ‘though one might easily infer from this letter that Gershwin sought Schillinger’s help… there is nothing in the finished score that would substantiate that inference.’ After the posthumous success of Porgy and Bess, ‘Schillinger himself… alleged that he supervised the entire writing of the opera… in defence of his brother, and in answer to such a claim, Ira stated in 1944 that “lessons like these… unquestionably broaden musical horizons, but they don’t inspire an opera like Porgy.’ Schwartz 112-13. "One page on Gershwin’s personalised stationery, 273 x 212 mm. Provenance: The Collection of Elsie and Philip Sang, their sale at Sotheby’s, New York, 14 October 2020, lot 85. Illustrated: Schwartz, Gershwin, his life and music, 124. "[With:] a concert programme for a performance by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra 'presenting George Gershwin' at the Civic Auditorium, Seattle, on 15 December 1936, signed in blue ink by Gershwin, one page, 279 x 152 mm.

GEORGE GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris George Gershwin

            Est: £8,000 - £12,000

GEORGE GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris George Gershwin "GERSHWIN, George (1898-1937). Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris. New York: Harms/New World Music, c.1927 and c.1929. "Early editions of the piano scores, signed and inscribed by George Gershwin to fellow composer Ann Ronell. Rhapsody in Blue inscribed in black ink on the title page ‘To Anne [sic] Rosenblatt – With every good wish – George Gershwin, Dec. 28, ‘2-,’ with three pencil annotations in Gershwin’s hand on the first page of music including ‘marcato’ above the fifth bar and ‘emph’ above the 16th bar, the third undecipherable; An American in Paris similarly inscribed ‘For Anne [sic] Ronell – affectionately, George Gershwin, with congratulations to Omalia. Sept 192-,’ with 34 annotations, rewrites and other markings by Gershwin in pencil throughout the score. The recipient was a student and protégé of Gershwin, who changed her name – apparently at Gershwin’s suggestion – from Ann Rosenblatt to Ann Ronell. Best known for the 1933 Walt Disney hit Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf and the 1932 standard Willow Weep for Me, the latter of which she dedicated to Gershwin, Ronell was the first woman to write both the music and lyrics for a Broadway show with Count Me In in 1942. "Commissioned by bandleader Paul Whiteman to write a piece for a concert advertised as ‘an experiment in modern music’, Gershwin completed his classical-jazz masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue in under a month, performing the piano part himself at the premiere in 1924. 'Attended by the likes of Toscanini, Stravinsky and Rachmaninov,’ writes Matthew Boyden, ‘the concert was a sensation, and it made Gershwin famous overnight.’ Following the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin travelled to Paris with the intention of refining his composition skills under Maurice Ravel. ‘The dapper Frenchman declined,’ states David Schiff, ‘saying, “Why should you be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?”’. The visit to Paris eventually inspired him to write the orchestral poem An American in Paris, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in December 1928. ‘This new piece, really a rhapsodic ballet, is written very freely and is the most modern music I’ve yet attempted…’ Gershwin explained in Musical America, 'My purpose here is to portray the impressions of an American visitor in Paris as he strolls about the city, listens to the various street noises, and absorbs the French atmosphere.’ Boyden, 150. Pollack, 433. Schiff, 'Misunderstanding Gershwin' in The Atlantic (October 1998). "Two volumes, quarto (292 x 223 mm). Printed musical scores, original self-wrappers respined (title pages trimmed, with slight loss to inscriptions, including the final digits of the date). Housed in a modern custom half-morocco box.

"Presentation copy of the first edition of an important collection of essays. Written for readers on the brink of war, it was intended as a provocation against the passivity of the masses to the erosion of liberty. Orwell explained his thinking in a letter to his publisher in January 1940: 'What worries me at present is the uncertainty as to whether the ordinary people in countries like England grasp the difference between democracy and despotism well enough to want to defend their liberties. One can't tell until they see themselves menaced in some quite unmistakable manner [...] However, perhaps when the pinch comes the common people will turn out to be more intelligent than the clever ones.' Besides the title essay, the book prints his studies of Charles Dickens and Boy's Weeklies. Fenwick, A.8a. "Octavo. (Lightly browning, some spotting to the endpapers). Original black cloth, titles to spine in yellow (extremities slightly rubbed); original dust-jacket priced at '7/6 net' supplied from another copy (tanned, several small chips and creases). Est: $2,400 - $3,600

George Thatcher Autograph Letter Signed on the Election of George Washington.  One page, 7.25" x 12.75", City of New York; April 6, 1789. A rare and historic letter with a "you are there" feel written by Thatcher as a member of the first Federal Congress just hours before both chambers of Congress were to meet in joint session to count the electoral votes, as required by the new United States Constitution, in order to officially elect George Washington first President of the United States. Thatcher wrote this letter to William Taylor informing him that with the arrival of Senator Richard Henry Lee, there were enough members to establish a quorum and count the electoral votes that would award the presidency to George Washington. Thatcher closes by writing of his intention to include a list of the names selected, assuming the votes are counted before the mail closes. Docketed on verso. He writes, in part: "Possibly it may afford you some pleasure to be informed that, after waiting a month; we are, at last, in a likely way to make a Congress as far as to open the Votes for President & Vice-President. This we are likely to do today: Mr. Richard H. Lee arrived in Town yesterday whose presence makes a quorum in the Senate. The house of Representatives made a quorum on Wednesday last. Should the Canvising [ sic] of these Votes take place before the mail is closed I will insert a list of them in this Letter. But I doubt whether the two houses will get together; & the Senate choose their President for the purpose of presiding at the opening the votes, in Season for the request to be sent by this days mail which closes at Twelve – However as a dispatch will be sent off with all possible speed to inform the Gentlemen of their Elections, ‘tis probable you may hear thereof as soon as by the mail." Signed, " Geo. Thatcher."  George Thatcher (1754-1824) was a Federalist politician from Massachusetts who served in the Continental Congress in 1787 and the U.S. House of Representatives from 1789-1792 and 1794-1801. He was appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Court in 1801. Condition: Window mounted. Evidence of expert repair to small closed tear at left margin that does not touch text. Ink notation at bottom margin of verso. Smoothed folds. HID01801242017
