      • Carl Kauba, Gilded Bronze 'St. George', Austria, c. 1910
        Apr. 04, 2014

Carl Kauba, Gilded Bronze 'St. George', Austria, c. 1910

        Est: €800 - €1,000

Gilded bronze; white marble Austria, c. 1914 Carl Kauba (1865-1922) - Viennese Sculptor Verso signed with the pseudonym 'T. Curts fec.' Very detailed rendered bronze sculpture Total dimensions: 16.5 x 10 x 6 cm (height x width x depth) Very good condition This highly elegant sculpture depicts a fine, gilded bronze statuette of St George on horseback. It is mounted on a white marble pedestal. The fine gilded bronze statuette by the Viennese artist Carl Kauba shows the dragon and its slayer on a rugged golden stone in every detail. The dragon has turned towards the rider above him, thus giving him the chance to thrust his spear deep into the animal's throat. The saint is displayed as a young, noble knight in full armor and his helmet is adorned with a crest in form of a miniature dragon. His horse is a fiery animal that rears up high above the dragon. His ears are laid back and his fine front legs stride up widely above the dragon on the ground. The bronze statuette is in very good condition with traces of wear and age, the two small bronze applications on the front of the marble pedestal are abraded. The sculpture is signed verso on the stone 'T. Curts'. The total dimensions are 16.5 x 10 x 6 cm; the sculpture alone measuring 11.5 x 16 x 6 cm (height x width x depth). Carl Kauba (1865-1922) The Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba attended the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Laufenberg, Waschmann and Schwartz. He later continued his education in Paris. Kauba's polychrome, very detailed and realistic sculptures make him one of the leading 'Viennese bronze' artists. Fascinated by the adventure novels by the German author Karl May (1842-1912), his expressive illustrations mostly show Wild West motifs, like cowboys and Native Americans. His representation of American Indian headdresses, weapons and costumes were rendered with great attention to detail. There is no evidence that Kauba himself has ever been to America. Carl Kauba personally directed the casting of his clay models. Most bronzes from the years 1895 to 1912 were produced for the U.S. market, where they were offered in New York until the 1950s. Today collectors rank Kauba in the same league as Frederic Remington (1961-1909) and Charles Russell (1864-1926), the great portrayers of the American West.
