Todros Geller (Illinois, 1889-1949) Kacinas 1936 The rare block print from an edition of only 52 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. A fine, dark impression. This is a fine, darkly inked example of this scarcely seen print and in exceptional condition. The work is unframed. Image measures 5.75 x 4, sheet is 8.5 x 7.75 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions. This lot contains four pieces of framed artwork: "Simchat Torah", a pencil signed and numbered (12/40) lithograph by Todros Geller (Jewish American, 1889-1949). This piece has minor mat burn; "Gust of Wind", a pencil signed and numbered (17/30) woodcut by Jakob Steinhardt (Germany, 1887-1968). There is minor toning and wear to the border of that work; "Philosopher", a pencil signed etching with aquatint by Joseph Margulies (Austria, 1896-1984). There is minor toning present to this work; and an abstract watercolor of two girls by Shelly Canton (America, 1930-1986), signed lower right. Each frame shows minor signs of wear. "Yemenite Beggar" by Todros Geller, 1939 Unsigned Woodblock. Paper size is 9.25 x 9 inches, with an image size of 6 x 4.5 inches. The Woodblock is from an unknown edition size. and is not framed. The condition was rated A: Mint. Additional details: This piece derives from the 1939 AMERICAN BLOCK PRINT CALENDAR published by Gutenberg Publishing Co., Chicago. American Block Print Calendar. In the 1920s, Geller visited British-controlled Palestine in the hope of discovering an indigenous Jewish folk art tradition. While the trip provided Geller with rich material for subsequent work, he did not find what he sought. Around 1924, Geller wrote Shteyn a disparaging account of the artistic environment he encountered in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, “All have whims of various kinds: the whim of contention of the Jewish people as to why people buy no pictures from them, as to why American Jews are so greedy as to not support them for a few years, and so on … [The Hebraists] have… brought over ideologies from Paris, Warsaw, or Germany, which do not suit life here.”
