Minor damage to frame (94.5 x 116 cm). 1943 wurde im Wiener Künstlerhaus eine Ausstellung zu "Jungen Künstlern im dritten Reich" durchgeführt, in der Geigenberger mit vier Ölgemälden vertreten war. Diese Ausstellung zeigte die unklare Haltung des Nationalsozialismus zu einer "jungen Kunst", da hier auch Werke gezeigt wurden, die aus Museen unter dem Vorwand, es sei "entartete Kunst", beschlagnamt wurden. Das Konzept war durchaus provokativ für die Zeit, ist allerdings eher ein Versuch der Initiatoren, sich gegen ihre parteiinternen Konkurenten zu profilieren. Dieser Versuch war allerdings aufgrund des Drucks der Parteivorstände in Berlin gescheitert: Es wird berichtet, dass wegen des Drucks des NS-Regimes die Ausstellung wenige Wochen nach Eröffnung geschlossen werden musste. Ein Gemälde von Otto Geigenberger wurde betitelt "Aus Brügge" (Kat.-Nr. 167). vermutlich handelt es sich um das hier vorliegende Gemälde. Vgl. Geigenberger was awarded the scarce Albrecht Durer Medal, the Rome Prize and the Prize of the German Artists' Union. He belonged to the Munich Secession, the Berlin Secession, the Prussian Academy of the Arts, the Association of Berlin Artists and from 1945 the Neue Gruppe Munchen and the Ulm Artists' Guild. 'Fritz' Wallace (1904 – 2014, Germany, America) was born in Munich, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1938 and served with the Army for three years in the ‘European Theater of Operations’ (ETO). He traveled extensively throughout the globe, collecting with an extremely educated focus and uncommon eye. Truly devoted to research for his collection, Mr. Wallace ensured that he purchased the rarest of interested items in only the best of condition. [NB] Provenienz: Private collection South Germany. Corners softly bumped. Edges with tiny to small tears and small paper losses, backed. Upper right margin with larger paper loss, backed and retouched, left margin with larger tear, backed. Upper centre margin with soft vertical crease mark. Minimally discoloured, more obvious on the edges. With brown stains and isolated soft handling marks.

On laid paper (with blindstamp Progress). 53,3 x 79,4 cm (20,9 x 31,2 in), the full sheet. Provenienz: Private collection South Germany. Otto Geigenberger, who was the brother of the graphic artist August Geigenberger, became famous for his views of cities, landscapes and flower still lifes. He trained at the Munich Applied Arts School and the Polytechnic. In Munich he lived at the so-called Painters' Castle", which provided accommodation for painters in Adalbertstraße, Schwabing, very near the Munich Art Academy. Geigenberger was a member of the Munich and Berlin Secessions as well as the Ulm Artists' Guild. His talent as a colourist is clear in the present landscape sketched with such a deft touch. [NB] Good overall impression. With minor mount staining. A few tiny pin holes in the margins. The centre with a minor vertical crease mark.
