    Dec. 11, 2024

    WILLIAM GEDDES (SCOTTISH 1841-1884)

    Est: £500 - £700

WILLIAM GEDDES (SCOTTISH 1841-1884) ROB ROY KEEPING WATCH signed with the monogram lower left oil on canvas 60 x 48cm; 23 1/2 x 19in 88.5 x 74cm; 35 x 29in (framed) Property from a Lady, Staffordshire Provenance Acquired by the husband of the present owner circa 1980 The present work depicts Rob Roy MacGregor, a character of Scottish-folkloric legend, in his hideout with a considerable armoury - including his broad sword, pistol and targe (a distinctly Scottish, large circular shield) - keeping watch over the surrounding Highlands and ready for battle. The location is said to be on the hillside above the farmstead of Tulloch, just west of the Kirkton of Balquhidder in a cave behind a waterfall. Rob Roy was a mischievous outlaw notorious for stealing cattle from wealthy farmers, the Robin Hood-type figure became a local hero during the Jacobite uprisings at the Battle of Killiecrankie at the age of just eighteen, and subsequently the 1715 rising against the Duke of Argyll who commanded the government troops in Scotland.

Study for 'The Dookin Hole, Ericht, Blairgowrie' signed with monogram (lower left) oil on board 9 1/8 x 133/4 in. (23.2 x 34.9 cm.) PROVENANCE with The Fine Art Society, London, in 1986, when acquired by the present owner. NOTES A Scottish genre and landscape painter, Geddes started as a house painter earning two shillings a week. He married in Edinburgh and then returned to Blairgowrie, becoming indelibly associated with the town. His early reputation was largely due to his meticulous studies of fish, Perth Art Gallery holds one such example entitled Two Fish. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1865 and 1884 and at the Royal Glasgow Institute between 1861 and 1884.In 1871, and again in 1875, he visited Paris, studying for two months in the Louvre, during the latter trip he was arrested as a spy. In 1882, he won a Gold Medal and œ50 for the best genre painting in the RSA. As can be surmised by the composition of this painting, 'Dookin' is a colloquial term for bathing or swimming. The location of the finished version of this study is currently unknown. The River Ericht runs between Loch Ericht and Loch Rannoch, north-west of Blairgowrie, Scotland.
