In the foreground a meadow with a small brook. The German painter Otto Gebler studied in Dresden from 1858, later in Munich under Karl von Piloty. From his numerous paintings, which he exhibited from 1864 onwards in Berlin, Dresden and Munich, sometimes also in Vienna, Paris and London, several of them found their way into public museums. The painting 'Reinekes Ende' (Fox and Three Dachshunds), for example, is in the Pinakothek in Munich. Very finely drawn animal study. Otto Gebler, together with the animal painter Anton Braith, is considered formative for the following generation of animal painters, such as Heinrich von Zügel. In this study the artist examined the physiognomy and anatomy of the animals. The sheep eventually also became the main motif of his paintings, which were compared with those of the painter Heinrich Brendel, who was considered a master of sheep painting. His painting Reineke's End was purchased by the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen for the Neue Pinakothek. Gebler's estate consists of about 50 oil paintings and sketches, 17 sketchbooks and over 60 drawings. Gebler studierte ab 1854 an der Kunstakademie Dresden und ab 1858 in München bei K. T. von Piloty, von dem er zwar die Malweise, aber nicht die Sujets übernahm, sondern sich schon früh auf Tierbilder spezialisierte. Ab 1864 an Ausstellungen in München, Berlin, Dresden, aber auch London, Paris, Wien beteiligt, wurde er erst Ehren-Mitglied der Münchner Akademie der Bildenden Künste, später erhielt er auch den Professoren-Titel. Seine Tierbilder zeichnen sich durch eine humoristische Komponente und den Versuch, die Individualität der einzelnen Tiere herauszuarbeiten, aus. Gerahmt. [bg]

Very finely drawn animal study. Otto Gebler, together with the animal painter Anton Braith, is considered formative for the following generation of animal painters, such as Heinrich von Zügel. In this study the artist examined the physiognomy and anatomy of the animals.
