An animal painter, landscape painter and engraver, Christian David Gebauer trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with C.A. Lorentzen. He exhibited his student works, a mixture of ink drawings and oil paintings, and caught the attention of Nicolai Abildgaard. Shortly afterwards, Count Reventlow became his patron. In 1807, the outbreak of the Gunboat War aroused his interest in battle painting and he applied for royal travel grants, which were eventually granted.
