Anthony Gayton Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1968 -

“Gayton quite deliberately presents not only iconographic characters from the history of art and mythology, but plays with the form of appearance of photography itself. Irony and a love of detail add to the appeal of these images. Furthermore an increased interest in the fantastic and narrative is evident. For Gayton, photography offers the opportunity to dream the dream of eternal youth, beauty and desire.” Peter Weiermair

“A master in the mise-en-scène manipulation, he accomplishes any aesthetic, typological or stylistic results he wishes..” Natasha Christia

“Gayton’s…work is interesting from a number of different points of view. It is an example of the way in which photography is now challenging, and even regularly surpassing, more traditional media as a vehicle for serious moral and psychological messages.”

Edward Lucie-Smith

ANTHONY GAYTON (Devon, 1968). "Bacchamalia," 2003. Measurements: 110 x 202 cm. Gayton studied photography at the West Surrey College of Art and Design, and later expanded his photographic knowledge at the University of Westminster in London. After winning several scholarships and participating in group exhibitions, he settled in Vienna in 1993. Between 1998 and 2007 he worked for the studio of Austrian photographer Andreas H. Bitesnich, an artist specializing in portraits and nudes. From 2007 onwards, Gayton began his solo career, with major international exhibitions. Many of Gayton's photographs are digitally retouched and are inspired by myths, characters or male plastic representations with erotic connotations. Thus, he has reinterpreted pictorial works by Andrea Mantegna3 or Caravaggio, homoerotic myths such as Ganymede, Icarus or Narcissus, or characters such as Saint Sebastian, whom painters have traditionally used as a model of male beauty.
