          (1919-1994) Tail gunner of the famed B-29 bomber Enola Gay. Facing the rear of the B-29, he was the first to see the mushroom cloud. Caron was given a camera at the last moment and snapped a roll of photographs as the mushroom cloud ascended. His photographs of the explosion were printed on millions of leaflets that were dropped over Japan the next day. Signed 8 x 10 in. b/w photograph of Enola Gay Tail Gunner George Caron posing in his military uniform, signed in black ink 'George R. Caron'. Fine condition.

          George Howell Gay Wisconsin, Chicago, New York, (1858-1931) rural landscape with wetlands watercolor on paper Signed lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: George H. Gay was well known for his watercolor landscapes, seascapes and paintings of rivers and ships, mostly along the shores of New England. Gay also painted snowscapes, but these are scarcer. It is unusual to find an oil painting by this artist, as he worked mainly in watercolor. Some of his works display a tonalist aesthetic. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago. He is known to have exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1890; Boston Art Club, 1890-1900; and Boston Art Club, 1897. Shortly before his death in 1931, George Gay's address in 1929 was known to be 100 Kraft Ave., Bronxville, NY.           Two autographed copies of the first page of 'Birth of the Atomic Age' by Joseph F. Papalia, one copy is signed by GEORGE CARON (1919-1994) Tail gunner of the famed B-29 bomber Enola Gay. Facing the rear of the B-29, Caron was the first to see the mushroom cloud. The second excerpt is signed by RICHARD H. NELSON (1925-2003) youngest crew member of the Enola Gay and radio operator on the historic bombing mission. Each one page, light mailing folds, 8.5 x 11 inches. Joseph Papalia is an official historian of the 509th Composite Group, the US Army Air Force unit created specifically for dropping atomic bombs during World War II.
