Small fauvist painting depicting a landscape with tall and full dark green tree at left set on rolling hills before a low and sloping horizon line, the hillside in many shades of light green and the sky of light blue with large and puffy cloud at right with purple shadowing to bottom. Framed approximately 12" x 10", unframed approximately 10.125" x 7.875". Alternate spelling of name: Gus Gay. Note: Together with Selden Gile (American (California), 1877-1947), Gay formed the “Society of Six” painting group, a loosely knit band of painters based in Oakland, California in the 1910s and 20s who painted en plein air and shared appreciation of Fauvist color sensibilities, the group espousing a rebellion against the prevalent somber tonalism and decorative aesthetics otherwise prevalent in painting of the era.
