  • Original Vintage Poster Harwich Zeebrugge - Saves Packing Time Money by H.G. Gawthorn
    Feb. 06, 2025

Original Vintage Poster Harwich Zeebrugge - Saves Packing Time Money by H.G. Gawthorn

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

This original vintage poster by British artist H.G. Gawthorn promotes the Harwich-Zeebrugge train ferry service, emphasizing its efficiency and cost-saving benefits. The tagline, "Saves Packing - Time - Money," succinctly conveys the practical advantages of this innovative ferry service, which streamlined the transportation of goods between the UK and continental Europe. The artwork features a striking composition, with a bold depiction of a train ferry carrying loaded freight trucks across the Channel. The clean typography and sharp lines reflect the functional and direct messaging typical of early 20th-century transport advertising. Henry George Gawthorn (1879-1941) was a British painter and lithographer renowned for his contributions to early 20th-century travel and transport posters. Born in Northampton, he pursued architectural studies at Regent Street Polytechnic and Heatherley's School of Fine Art in London. Transitioning from architecture to the arts, Gawthorn became celebrated for his vibrant poster designs, notably for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). His works often depicted dynamic scenes of travel and leisure, characterized by bold compositions and a distinctive Art Deco style. Beyond his artistic creations, Gawthorn authored books on poster design, sharing his expertise and influencing the field. His legacy endures through his iconic posters, which continue to be appreciated for their artistic and historical significance. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

Qty: (1) This railway bridge, crossing the Forth estuary in Scotland, had the world’s longest span when it opened in 1890. It remains one of the greatest cantilever trussed bridges and continues to carry passengers and freight. Innovative in style, materials and scale, the Forth Bridge marks an important milestone in bridge design and construction during the period when railways came to dominate long-distance land travel. The Dangerfield Printing Co., Ltd., London Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, restoration and overpainting in margins; skinning and abrasions at edges; creases in image. In many of his finest posters, Gawthorn employed his signature, stylized graphic ability to depict the privileged classes engaging in their exclusive and elegant pastimes. His Art Deco inspired illustrations were largely executed using flat colors in a manner reminiscent of Ludwig Hohlwein and Fred Taylor. For this beach resort in England's northeast he depicts bathers, beach-goers and the Redcar pier. Not in Furness. rare/span

"The Forth Bridge crosses the estuary of the River Forth in Scotland to connect the East Coast route between London and Aberdeen. It was designed by Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker and opened by the Prince of Wales in 1890" (Railway p. 137).
