Casino de Paris / Mistinguett / Paris Qui Brille. 1931.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: ZIG (Louis Gaudin, 1882-1936) SIZE: 30 x 84 7/8 in./76.2 x 215.4 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Mistinguett, queen of the French music-hall, had a way of outliving her designers. After her favorite, Gesmar, died in 1928, she switched to Zig. The artist had been a habitué of Montmartre cabarets where he sang and recited at the drop of a beret. Both of them affected a flamboyantly showy style, which exactly suited the Miss persona, and after he proved himself with set and costume designs, she ultimately trusted him with the design of her posters. In this poster for the revue “Paris Adazzle” at the Casino de Paris, Zig depicts Mistinguett perched on a stool with the city at her feet, displaying most of her visible assets. Setting off all that skin are long red gloves, oodles of dripping jewelry, and an insouciant little hat. This is the rare, larger format. (Art Deco; Cabaret)

        Mistinguett. 1928.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: ZIG (Louis Gaudin, 1882-1936) SIZE: 46 1/4 x 62 1/4 in./117.6 x 158 cm PRINTER: Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris DESCRIPTION: After her favorite designer, Gesmar, died in 1928, Mistinguett turned to Zig to create lively posters and costumes for her many performances. A showman at heart, he knew how to give an image eye-catching pizzaz and style, which showcased Mistinguett’s flamboyant public persona perfectly. Possibly referencing the fact that Mistinguett began her career as a flower seller singing ballads and folk songs in cafés and restaurants, this sweet image presents the performer as a naive darling of the stage. ZIG (LOUIS GAUDIN) Mistinguett in a hen house.

        Est: $800 - $1,200

ZIG (LOUIS GAUDIN) Mistinguett in a hen house. Illustration for poster maquette, 1932. Gouache on paper. 457x330 mm; 18x13 inches. Matted and framed to 23x19 inches. Signed and dated, "ZIG 32" in lower right image. Louis Gaudin, who signed his art "Zig," began his career in the United States, designing the costumes for Broadway musicals. He is best known for his posters for Parisian nightlife during the 1920s and 30s. His subject, Mistinguett, born Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois in 1875, was a performer famous for her raunchy and flamboyant stage shows, appearing at iconic French entertainment venues such as Casino de Paris, Folies Bergere and Moulin Rouge. Her popularity made her one of the most treasured and highest-paid female entertainers of her era. In 1932 when this piece was made, Mistinguett would have been 57 years old, active in the theatre for nearly 40 years. She was legendary in France, considered the personification of the French people: "liberated, sophisticated, beautiful, stylish and enjoying the good things of life." [David] Source: David, Samantha. The show was such a success that a similarly titled (and themed) production, “Paris qui Brille,” was organized soon after for Mistinguett. Zig designed the poster for this show (see PAI-LXV, 328); here he’s designed the song cover. (Art Deco; Cabaret; Animals; Cats; Josephine Baker; Music)

Here, he’s envisioned a costume for Arletty’s performance in the 1932 operetta Xantho chez les Courtisanes, based on the 1910 play by Jacques Richepin. Arletty, whose real name was Léonie Marie Julie Bathiat, played Myrrhine, the High Priestess of Aphrodite. Chachoin, Paris One of the most celebrated dance acts in France during the Jazz Age, Simone Roseray and Jacques Cappella brought not only stunning acrobatics and grace to a performance, but also a healthy dose of salacious gossip. Billed as both Russian and French, they appeared frequently in all the major venues, from the Folies-Bergère to the theaters along the Riviera, gradually building up more exotic acts which required them to perform partially-nude. Rumor had it that Roseray was even Capella’s mother. This poster was created toward the end of their fame, when the addition of the third member, Sylvio, joined their small troupe. Gigolette Chat de Gouttiere. ZIG (Louis Gaudin, ?-1936) Hand-signed gouache and crayon drawing. Framed. Though the English-speaking public is far more familiar with the term "gigolo," that word is actually a back-formation from the French word "gigolette," which meant a young woman who frequented public dances, or more to the point, a prostitute. Though less than complimentary in appellation, this long-legged femme-fatale (whose birthmark/tattoo combination indicates a certain potential predisposition), toting an appropriately scruffy alley cat companion, is svelte flapper perfection. Two inclusions in the design remain somewhat unclear: the initials "R.L." that appear beneath the title (which may well be the initials of the performer for which the costume design was intended) and "L'Escalier," which appears verso (perhaps the name of the set piece in which this performer would be appearing). 12 x 18 1/4 in./30.5 x 46.4 cm

Mistinguett, queen of the French music-hall, had a way of outliving her designers. After her favorite, Gesmar, died in 1928, she switched to Zig. The artist had been a habitue of Montmartre cabarets where he sang and recited at the drop of a beret. Both of them affected a flamboyantly showy style, which exactly suited the Miss persona, and after he proved himself with set and costume designs, she ultimately trusted him with the design of her posters. Zig's poster for Mistinguett's "Paris Dazzles" revue more than lives up to its designation: a bejeweled Mistinguett, pink-tinged feather in one hand, reins of her playful team of blue horses in the other, spotlit against a black background. This is the largest format. ZIG (Louis Gaudin, ?-1936)

ZIG (Louis Gaudin, ?-1936) Mistinguett. Mistinguett, queen of the French music-hall, had a way of outliving her designers. After her favorite, Gesmar, died in 1928, she switched to Zig. The artist had been a habitué of Montmartre cabarets where he sang and recited at the drop of a beret. Both of them affected a flamboyantly showy style, which exactly suited the Miss persona, and after he proved himself with set and costume designs, she ultimately trusted him with the design of her posters. Here, Zig gives us Mistinguett as a country girl complete with a basket of flowers. Beyond its graphic flair, it's Zig juxtaposing the star's saucy sexiness with naïf trappings like Brigitte Bardot in her gingham bikini that makes the image so effective. Imp. H. Chachoin, Paris
