Antoni (1852) Gaudí Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1852 - d. 1926

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (25 June 1852 – 10 June 1926) was a Catalan architect known as the greatest exponent of Catalan Modernism.[3] Gaudí's works have a highly individualized, sui generis style. Most are located in Barcelona, including his main work, the church of the Sagrada Família.

Gaudí's work was influenced by his passions in life: architecture, nature, and religion.[4] He considered every detail of his creations and integrated into his architecture such crafts as ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry. He also introduced new techniques in the treatment of materials, such as trencadís which used waste ceramic pieces.

Under the influence of neo-Gothic art and Oriental techniques, Gaudí became part of the Modernista movement which was reaching its peak in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work transcended mainstream Modernisme, culminating in an organic style inspired by natural forms. Gaudí rarely drew detailed plans of his works, instead preferring to create them as three-dimensional scale models and moulding the details as he conceived them.

Gaudí's work enjoys global popularity and continuing admiration and study by architects. His masterpiece, the still-incomplete Sagrada Família, is the most-visited monument in Spain.[5] Between 1984 and 2005, seven of his works were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Gaudí's Roman Catholic faith intensified during his life and religious images appear in many of his works. This earned him the nickname "God's Architect"[6] and led to calls for his beatification.

ANTONI GAUDÍ (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Column. Terracotta and wood. Measurements: 110 x 30 x 30 cm. This column is a brilliant example of the attention and care that Gaudí paid to the details that decorated his buildings. The organic forms of this column or pedestal are reminiscent of the doorknobs and other details of the Casa Milà or Pedrera, where the ornament merges with the architectural. One of the main ideas of architectural modernism, with which this artist always shared, was the integration of the major and minor arts, that is, the integration of architecture with decoration, furniture and sculpture. This is the modernist concept of organic architecture, according to which Gaudí conceived the building as a living organism, with all its parts harmoniously related, from the façade to the ceiling panels, furniture, lamps, etc., all designed by him down to the last detail. As a student he frequented various craft workshops, where he learned the different trades related to architecture, such as sculpture, carpentry, forging, glass, ceramics and plaster casting. His idea, shared with William Morris, one of the fathers of modernism, was that to design an artistic object you first need to know the working techniques, in order to make the most of the possibilities they offer. In fact, thanks to the artists of modernism, many artistic techniques of the past, which were in danger of being lost in the face of the advance of industrialization, were recovered. This piece is a clear example of this concept of living organism that Gaudí embodied in his buildings. It is about capturing without further artifice the idea of the abstract organic, of the essence of the living, with no intention of referring to reality. The forms of this column seem to thread freely with each other, bubbling with life, in permanent movement, and hence its asymmetrical composition, which avoids any rigidity. Without entirely dispensing with the nod to the baroque tradition, it is nevertheless formally completely innovative; it leaves aside the figurative decoration to give prominence to the living organic mass, as if the architectural element were just another element of nature, as if it had grown spontaneously and was not the result of the hand of man. The forms of this pedestal are lively, organic but not naturalistic in the traditional sense, so that they seem to flow through the piece vertically, developing in freedom and giving the pedestal an asymmetrical shape and soft appearance, typically Gaudí. The maximum representative of Catalan modernism and, therefore, of Spanish modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. Already as a child he liked hiking, the direct contact with nature. Having stood out as a child for his drawings, he studied architecture at the Escuela de la Llotja and the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, where he graduated in 1878. With his first major commission, the Casa Vicens, Gaudí began to acquire renown, and to attract increasingly larger commissions. In 1878 he exhibited at the Universal Exposition in Paris a showcase made for the Comella glove shop. This piece, with its modernist and functional design, impressed the industrialist Eusebi Güell, a key figure in Gaudí's artistic biography. In fact, Güell was, in addition to being Gaudí's great friend, his main patron, and commissioned some of his most outstanding works, such as the Park Güell. In 1883, he accepted the commission to continue the work on the Sagrada Familia; Gaudí completely modified the structure of the Sagrada Família.

This model of plinth is catalogued in the book "Catalan Modernism", published by the Caja Vital Kutxa Foundation in 2002, p. 162. It should also be noted how the organic forms of this piece are reminiscent of those of the façade of the Nativity of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. This is the only part of the church directly built by Gaudí, and has recently been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its entire surface is decorated with an abstract organic decoration, moving and full of life, mixing the vegetable with the liquid, identical to that which covers, concealing it, the structure of this pedestal. Gaudi is currently considered to be the world's greatest architect of his time. This pedestal was designed by Gaudi for the Batllo mansion on Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona. It was made by the company Esteva i Cia. in spartan plaster with naturalistic forms, comparable to a tree trunk, with dark green and gold polychromy. Only two others are known of this piece, one in the Mnac, with damage, and the other in the Museu del Modernisme Catalá. Gaudí's designs for furniture and decorative arts can now be admired in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the MOMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the National Art Museum of Catalonia, as well as in his House-Museum in Parc Güell.

            Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Following designs by ANTONI GAUDÍ (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Niche, ca.1900-1905. Carved and gilded wood. Size: 105 x 40 x 22 cm. Hornacina following Gaudí's designs. Gaudí's designs for religious architecture, specifically in the supports of tabernacles and corbels were characterized by the combination of angelic and mythological figures with delicate forms of organic inspiration that made the master of Reus the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism. The niche in question contains a small hollow for a chapel, guarded by a cherub with open wings. The whole has a typically Gaudí design, and a remarkable workmanship in every detail of its gilded carving. The structural element starts with a flaming interlacing of enveloping scrolls. Around the niche, the structure continues uninterruptedly in cottony-looking, layered designs, which culminate in a scallop whose striated blades harmonize with the pleated bangs that complete the ornamentation. A winged nymph with long wavy hair peeks her head over a promontory covered with floral bouquets that proliferate around rockery motifs. As for the floral bouquets, each corolla has also been worked with individualized and precise work. In short, the carving is brimming with exquisite contrasts between rough, ethereal, textured and silky qualities. This piece shares the deep spirituality of the modernist genius, through whose architectural work he wanted to combat modern materialism, promoting religious sentiment through the sublimity of an art that reinvented the Gothic legacy. The maximum representative of Catalan modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. In 1883 he accepted the commission to continue the work on the Sagrada Familia; Gaudí totally modified the initial project, and this construction became his masterpiece, on which he worked until the day of his death. This project was followed by other important commissions, such as the episcopal palace of Astorga, the Batlló and Milá houses and the restoration of the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. In 1910 the first exhibition dedicated to Gaudí was held at the Grand Palais in Paris. After his death, important retrospectives of the architect were held, including the one at the MOMA in New York, his first major international exhibition, which took place in 1957. Design by ANTONI GAUDÍ (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Calvet" armchair. Oak wood. BD edition. Production ca.1985. Wear and tear. Some damage to the wood of the seat. Model exhibited in "Objects of Desire. Surrealism and design, 1924-2020", La Caixa. Measurements: 96 x 65 x 60 cm. The "Calvet" chair is an original design by Gaudí from 1902, re-edited by BD and produced by hand, with the same original materials and all the richness of detail with which the originals were made in their day. It is a chair with curved, fluid, natural and soft lines, with a small backrest reminiscent of the central balconies on the back façade of the Casa Calvet. It is a simple, comfortable piece of furniture intended to form part of the modernist office of the house. The Casa Calvet on Carrer Casp in Barcelona was the first housing project built by the Catalan architect, which was recognised by Barcelona City Council with the prize for the best building of 1900. Two years later, in 1902, Gaudí designed the oak furniture for the offices on the ground floor. They were originally manufactured by the firm Casa y Bardés and are now kept in the Gaudí Museum in Park Güell. The greatest representative of Catalan and, therefore, Spanish modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. He studied architecture at the Llotja School and the Barcelona School of Architecture, where he graduated in 1878. GAUDÍ, Antoni (Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Plaster plaster base. Measurements: 111 x 33 x 34 cm. They are lively, organic but unidentifiable forms, profoundly modernist, which seem to flow vertically through the piece, developing freely and giving the pedestal an asymmetrical, soft, typically Gaudidian shape. This pedestal is a brilliant example of the attention and care that Gaudí paid to the details that decorated his buildings. One of the main ideas of architectural modernism, with which Gaudí always shared, was the integration of the major and minor arts, that is, the integration of architecture with decoration, furniture and sculpture. This is the modernist concept of organic architecture, according to which Gaudí conceived the building as a living organism, with all its parts harmoniously related, from the façade to the ceiling panels, furniture, lamps, etc., all designed by him down to the last detail. As a student he frequented various craft workshops, where he learned the various trades related to architecture, such as sculpture, carpentry, forging, glass, ceramics and plaster moulding. His idea, shared with William Morris, one of the fathers of modernism, was that in order to design an artistic object, one first needs to know the working techniques in order to make the most of the possibilities they offer. In fact, thanks to the artists of modernism, many artistic techniques of the past, which were in danger of being lost in the face of the advance of industrialisation, were recovered. Our piece is a clear example of this concept of a living organism that Gaudí embodied in his buildings. It is not something defined, it is neither animal nor vegetable, and at the same time it looks like a mixture of both. It is a matter of capturing without further artifice the idea of the abstract organic, of the essence of the living, with no intention of referring to reality. The forms of this cantilever seem to twine freely around each other, bubbling with life, in permanent movement, hence its asymmetrical composition, which avoids any rigidity. While the use of gilding is a nod to tradition, formally this piece is completely innovative; it leaves figurative decoration to one side to give centre stage to the living organic mass, as if the building were just another element of nature, as if it had grown there spontaneously and was not the result of man's hand. The greatest representative of Catalan and, therefore, Spanish modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. Similar pieces are kept in the MNAC, Barcelona. Measurements: 44 x 49,5 x 10 cm. The cast iron grille at the entrance to Casa Vicens represents the margalló palm leaf that the architect adopted as an ornamental element around the perimeter of the estate. Today, part of this grille can be seen in Park Güell, where this original leaf comes from. This reference to natural elements is not only present in the façade of the house but, through the integration of different decorative arts -forging, painting, ceramics, carpentry, mural decoration, etc.-, Gaudí manages to bring nature into the house, thus creating a relationship between interior and exterior space. Gaudí found in nature the most important source of inspiration for all his work and Casa Vicens is one of the first examples, as we see how different natural elements are represented and integrated throughout the whole. Est: €40,000 - €50,000

ANTONI GAUDÍ (Reus or Riudoms, Tarragona, 1852 - Barcelona, 1926). Fragment of the original bench seat of the entrance staircase of Park Güell. Design: Antoni Gaudí. Mortar, ceramic and ceramic trencadís. Framed in iron. Measurements: 140 x 45 x 10 cm. This original piece is a fragment of the original seat of the bench on the main staircase at the entrance to Park Güell. It was substituted and replaced by the current ceramic in the restoration of 1985-1993. It is the odeon-shaped bench of the last section of the double staircase of access to the enclosure. In Park Güell, trencadís is one of the most emblematic finishing materials. Gaudí used bright, long-lasting colors on undulating surfaces that captured this brightness and enhanced the plastic effects. To achieve these conditions he used ceramics, but he needed them to adapt to the variety of surfaces he built. Trencadis was the solution that allowed him to use this material flexibly in all types of construction, even in rounded shapes.

Intended for the living rooms of the houses. Measurements: 50 cm x 43,5 cm x 2 cm. The parquet is articulated in the form of hexagons, divided into twelve triangles and alternating two types of wood, oak and white poplar. By joining the hexagons and extending the radial divisions, a two-color mosaic unfolds. This parquet was placed in all the chambers of the noble area of the apartments of La Pedrera and was created by the Taller Casas y Bardés, the piece we present here is original and was replaced by the current parquet. Maximum representative of Catalan modernism and, therefore, of Spanish modernism, Gaudí is one of the most outstanding architects and decorators in European history. Since the mid-twentieth century, Gaudí's appreciation has been increasing, culminating with the proclamation of several of his works as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1984 (Park Güell, Palacio Güell and Casa Milá), and 2005 (crypt and apse of the Sagrada Familia, the houses Vicens and Batlló and the crypt of the Colonia Güell). Gaudí's designs for furniture and decorative arts can currently be admired at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the MOMA in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, as well as in his House-Museum in Park Güell.
