He made these prints using multiple irregular plates so that the individual images become self-contained forms that rise above the surface of the paper. The absence of plate marks precludes interpreting the paper surface as anything other than itself.”The embossing technique was well suited to such a subtle interplay of lines and patterns. The relationship of the lines seems to favour the mathematical or phenomenological over artistic sensitivity or intuition. Simply, serial repetition alerted slightly to evoke a difference not necessarily a hierarchy. The image can be taken in and digested in a glance. Estimate: $800—1,200

However, unlike Molinari, Gaucher's paintings must be viewed as one single object as opposed to a sequence of visual experiences. Molinari's stripe paintings are meant to be considered sequentially, to be read from one side to another, each field of colour in relation to the one adjacent. Accordingly, the orientation of stripes arranged horizontally in this work, as opposed to vertically as in so many of Molinari's paintings, is not whimsy, but compels the viewer to consider the work holistically. Prior to 1970, Gaucher worked from drawings which allowed him to scale up his ideas more easily. However, after 1970, Nasgaard writes: "When structure and colour became inextricably linked, drawings were at best an initial step in exploring ideas. There was no predicting how a particular balance of yellow, red and grey at drawing size would work blown up to 9 x 15 feet."  With respect to his practice, Gaucher will do a number of works using similar colours and even similar ratios, but of different sizes.  Nasgaard continues: "Gaucher may start at the largest size but his common working procedure is to work up to the final size. Often several sizes in the same series will be worked on simultaneously." At least one other version of this lot exists: a larger version measuring just over 9 x 15 feet.Nasgaard quotes Gaucher explaining his painting process: "The physicality of working on a big painting, and the scale, is very different from a smaller one. I like to bounce between the big and small, on the same premise basically, just to reassess where the problem is. Sometimes you get carried away with a very large painting and you try to convince yourself that it is working. But as soon as you bring the problem back to the small one you sense that there is something wrong which you have to settle in the small one before going back to the big one, or vice-versa. To work on more than one painting refreshes my head and forces me to keep it open in more than one direction."In Green, Yellow and Red, Gaucher provides the viewer with what Diana Nemiroff describes as a "contemplative perceptual experience."

The work's flat planes of colour across a diagonal horizon, carry with them a subtle structure. While the work appears deep and quiet, there is an antagonism at a play between the black and the blue. Given Étude's hues and its ability to evoke spatial awareness and self-reflection, the contemporary viewer may see this work by Gaucher as a predecessor to the works of contemporary artist James Turrell.Estimate: $3,000-4,000

Yves Gaucher 1934 - 2000 Canadian oil on canvas Danse carrée: Once Upon a Square 30 x 30 inches 76.2 x 76.2 centimeters on verso signed, titled and dated November - December 1964 - January 1965 Literature:Nathalie Garneau, Collection 1: Yves Gaucher, Les Danses carrées, Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia University, 2005, page 1 Provenance:Martha Jackson Gallery, New York An Important Montreal Collection In 1964, Yves Gaucher set out to redefine his art with the support of his galleries. By temporarily abandoning printmaking in favour of painting, he developed a new visual language focused on hard edge line, bold colour and playful shapes. Gaucher's inspiration for the Danse carrée series was derived from the movements of dancers in formation. This motif is essential to understanding the work Danse carrée: Once Upon a Square. Nathalie Garneau comments, "On this he arranged the elements that would henceforth characterize his formal vocabulary: lines and marks of varying lengths and thicknesses, as well as diamond shapes." In 1965, Gaucher's visionary Danse carrée paintings convinced dealer Martha Jackson of New York to feature two of them in the group show Vibrations 11. Jackson was impressed and gave the artist a solo show the subsequent year. It was an incredible accomplishment for the young Canadian artist, who was now poised to burst onto the world stage. Shortly after, Gaucher was selected to represent Canada at the XXXIII Venice Biennale, together with Sorel Etrog and Alex Colville.

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Yves Gaucher 1934 - 2000 Canadian acrylic on canvas R - M - I 80 x 80 inches 203.2 x 203.2 centimeters on verso signed, titled and dated 1969 Provenance:Acquired directly from the Artist by the present Private Collection, Toronto Yves Gaucher began his Grey on Grey paintings at the end of 1967. Although he had envisioned perhaps a dozen works, he continued to paint this series until October of 1969. Ultimately, they provide us with a summary of the artist's oeuvre to that point, and became one of his most widely appreciated series, both in Canada and abroad. To describe paintings like R - M - I as subtle or minimalist is clearly an understatement. Many great paintings appear, at first glance, to be almost obtuse in their simplicity, daring us to plumb their depths. Gaucher's work from all periods, including those where the colour is strong and vibrant, require a patient viewer. Although the prevailing colour in each painting reads as grey, the individual works have underlying grounds of blue-grey, green-grey, and so forth. The horizontal lines are in a range of white hues, barely differentiated in colour; and as with all of Gaucher's work, tonal variations are meant both for the eye and the ear. The delicate hues and tonality of R - M - I invite us to learn the painting's secrets, and the rewards of reading it thoroughly are well worth the effort.
