TIRZAH GARWOOD (BRITISH 1908-1951) Preview: Barley Mow Centre TIRZAH GARWOOD (BRITISH 1908-1951) Untitled, abstract designs original art work possibly intened for publication mixed media each 85 x 65 cm Eileen âTirzahâ Garwood attended Eastbourne School of Art (1925â28), where she was taught by Eric Ravilious (1903â1942) whom she married in 1930. She first exhibited in 1927, at the Redfern Gallery, and an early woodcut shown at the 1927 SWE exhibition received significant praise in 'The Times'. Such was the originality of her printmaking that she exerted an influence over Raviliousâ own wood engravings. She was also commissioned by the BBC in 1928 to illustrate Granville Bantockâs 'The Pilgrimâs Progress', and made whimsical but exacting observational pictures that were popular with children and exhibited by the Society for Education in Art.

Tirzah Garwood (1908-1951) Tirzah Garwood (1908-1951) Two sheets of marbled paper, c.1936. each sheet 70 x 49.5cm (2) Provenance: The collection of Cecilia Dunbar Kilburn, joint owner of Dunbar Hay Ltd., and then by descent; with Jennings Fine Art, Saffron Walden, Essex. Condition Report: The blue and grey sheet is unframed, there are slight handling creases to the edges and there is discolouration to the borders where the paper has been previously mounted. To the reverse of the sheet there are stripes where the paper is thin and appears to have been previously stuck down and a sheet of tissue paper remains attached, however, the front of the work appears unaffected, please see images The second work, in pink and yellow, has slight foxing and is hinge mounted to mountboard.

The current lot is from an edition of 500, printed from the original block in 1989, however it has been numbered as if from an edition of 200. Condition Report: Good condition.

The Life and Work of Tirzah Garwood (Ravilious), 8 April - 24 June 2012 Literature: Frances Spalding, Dictionary of British Art Volume VI - 20th century Painters and Sculptors, Antiques Collectors' Club Ltd., Suffolk, p.195 (ill.b&w) Footnote: Often described as a mother and wife, Tirzah Garwood sometimes appears to only exist when discussed in relation to her husband, the esteemed painter, designer and illustrator, Eric Ravilious. Though her work has spent decades growing cold under the long shadow cast by the work of her husband, in more recent years, it has been gaining the recognition and admiration it deserves. Born Eileen Lucy Garwood, to a wealthy family in Gillingham, Kent, in 1908, Tirzah was raised in Eastbourne, where she attended the local art school before training at Eastbourne School of Art. It was at Eastbourne College that Garwood met Ravilious, then her wood-engraving tutor and whom she described, somewhat uncharitably, as ‘not quite a gentleman’ and ‘tall and thin, with a head that jutted out at the back’. Though Garwood’s parents did not attempt to conceal their disapproval of the working-class Ravilious, by July 1930, the pair had wed, marking the end of Garwood’s incipient career in wood engraving. Though Garwood would continue in her artistic endeavours during the marriage, experimenting with delicate designs upon marbled paper, she was mostly content to fulfil her domestic and maternal responsibilities. After the tragic and untimely death of Ravilious in 1942, Garwood ventured into oil painting, creating a series of simultaneously naïve, and yet arduously detailed, works. Sadly, Garwood, like Ravilious, died prematurely, in 1951, before she was able to establish her career as a painter. The present lot is not only rare as it is one of the few engravings produced by Garwood before her marriage, but also, as it is uncharacteristically signed and numbered by the artist. Like her Great Bardfield contemporaries, the wood engravings of Tirzah Garwood possess a potency and power that is belied by the simplicity of form.

*Tirzah Ravilious née Garwood (1908-1951)'THE DOG SHOW';'THE HALL OF MIRRORS'Two wood engravings, one numbered 185/500 in pencil, the second from an edition of 100016 x 12.5cm and 14 x 14.5cm (2)Tirzah was born Eileen Lucy Garwood, but was nicknamed 'Tirzah' (a corruption of 'Tertia', as she was the third child). She became an assured, sensitive and prize-winning artist. In 1930, she married Eric Ravilious and assisted him with many projects, including the murals at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe. She gave up her art to raise her three children, beginning again after the premature death of Ravilious in 1942 and her remarriage in 1946. Sadly she, too, died prematurely, in 1951 after suffering from cancer.Her autobiography, edited by her daughter, Anne, 'Long Live Great Bardfield...', was published in 2012. The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden and Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne hold collections of her work.*Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
