          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

PAOLO FEDERICO GARRETTO (1903-1991) AMILCAR / ELLE EST PASSÉE! 1929. 45 1/2x60 3/4 inches, 115 1/2x154 1/4 cm. H. Chachoin, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears and printer's creases at edges, some into image. Framed. Garretto employs two established visual techniques to help convey his message; the advertised car has driven out of the frame, leaving only tire tracks and a plume of smoke behind. Yet, clearly it was such a car that it caught the eye and the attention of a trendy and handsomely dressed couple, who stand on the street corner looking after it. For the rest of us who were too slow to see it, there happens to be a poster within the poster depicting the car (ingeniously posted over other posters, whose corners are visible). Garretto was primarily a political cartoonist who became an international artistic star in the 1920s. He also received large commissions from American magazines like Vanity Fair, and began spending three or four months every year in the States. Auto s'Affiche p. 66.

Known above all for his political portraits, he emerged as one of the most interesting innovators of graphics, advertising painting, posters and billboards, both for the light-hearted elegance of his composition and for the promptness with which he sensed his characters, and finally for the application of new or unusual graphic techniques. He worked for the most important American magazines (Vanity Fair, Vogue, Fortune etc), as well as in Italian, French, German and English advertising. His geometric style fully represents the essence of Art Deco.

PAOLO FEDERICO GARRETTO (1903-1989). BP ETHYL. 1934. 29x44 inches, 75x112 cm.

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

PAOLO FEDERICO GARRETTO (1903-1989) BP ETHYL. 1934. 29 1/2x44 1/4 inches, 75x112 1/2 cm. Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Paper. Framed. "Garretto's modernist graphic shorthand resembles an airbrushed pictograph - an ancient painting or drawing done on a rock wall, such as a cave or a cliff, that was used to convey a specific meaning through simple pictures. In this design Garretto artfully depicts man's control of raw horsepower" (Crouse p. 92). Garretto gives McKnight Kauffer a friendly wink with this design, playing off Kauffer's 1933 poster for the company (see Swann sale 1970 Lot 66), and employing many of the same elements. On a dark background, the words BP ETHYL slope in a very modernist way and the bold lettering is reinforced by sophisticated, air-brushed shadowing. Where Kauffer used a photograph of a man and a horse, Garretto employs a fluid drawing, which he executes in his elegant style. As a continuation of the campaign started by Kauffer, it is the perfect image. Crouse p. 92.

Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; creases in margins and image. Framed. Garretto employs two established visual techniques to help convey his message. The advertised car has passed out of the frame, leaving only tire tracks and a plume of smoke behind.
