Ed Garman American, b. 1914 Painting No. 255, 1942 Signed Ed Garman, dated Feb 16-18-1942 and inscribed No. 255 on the reverse Oil on masonite panel 30 x 30 inches (76.2 x 76.2 cm) Provenance: Mr. Raymond Jonson, Taos, NM Martin Diamond Fine Arts, Inc., New York Born in Bridgeport and raised in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, Garman became part of the Transcendentalist Painting Group in Santa Fe, NM, where he moved in 1933. Inspired by the structural designs in the stage sets of Adolph Appia and Edward Gordon Craig, Garman devised an intellectual approach to form. Conceiving his compositions in terms of hard-edged geometric shapes, he sought to evoke a sense of rhythm and dynamic energy. Abandoning all references to the natural world, he manipulated geometric structure and color to express a higher, more universal form of reality. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
