Helen was born by his first wife, Helen and Nevillia by Charlotte Walter, his second. Ascanius William Senior went to India as a young man in 1753 to make his fortune as a "writer" and later a clerk in the employ of the East India Company. Rising in position and stature, he returned to England 13 years later, an extremely wealthy man, purchasing properties in London and in the countryside, including Pylewell in 1780. This portrait of his two oldest daughters was probably done in 1772 or 1773, based on the age of the two girls—shown here with a favorite lap-dog in a country setting. Daniel Gardner (1750-1805) was born in Westmorland and probably studied under George Romney in Kendal and again in London during the 1760s. From 1770-72, he was a student at the Royal Academy Schools and won a silver medal for figure drawing in 1771 and exhibited at the RA for the first time that same year. About 1772 he studied in Sir Joshua Reynold's studio. His association and friendship with both Romney and Reynolds led to valuable society introductions and he soon became a fashionable and successful portrait painter. Unlike most other leading portrait artists, who worked in oil, Gardner developed his own medium, a combination of body color, pastel and oils-the three being combined in a single work, as seen in this fine portrait. His group portraits of children are especially notable for their warm and sentimental treatment and it is perhaps the uniqueness of his medium that heightened his success in such commissions. Daniel Gardner (1705 - 1805) English school The Suckling Children playing with a Spaniel by a Balustrade Oil on canvasÂ Daniel Gardner was probably born in Kendal where we know he had painting lessons from George Romney, the fashionable portrait painter, who was working there from 1757 - 1762. Romney moved to London in 1762 and he was thought to have helped Gardner when he also moved there in 1767/8 to attend the Royal Academy Schools. We know that Gardner worked briefly in the studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds and from his work we can see the evidence of the influence of Sir Joshua, in his figure work. Having exhibited a drawing in the Royal Academy in 1771 Gardner appears to have established his own small, but successful, practice. Although he painted in oils in his later life, Gardner worked chiefly in pastels or in gouache with pastel reserved for certain passages of skin-tone. His landscape backgrounds may have influenced John Constable, who as a young man was befriended by Gardner and his family. Some of Gardners most famous works are those done of the Pennington Family, who were family friends, and the Heathcote family. Sold to Lord Carlingford, K.P. Lady Strachey, her sale Christie's Leggatt, 1911 Private collection UK Lady Strachey had a large collection of pastel portraits by Daniel Gardner which were sold at Christie's. The present portrait is possibly the portrait of Jackson Mason (1752-1809), a contemporary of Gardner's. It was bought by Leggatt in 1911 for one guinea. Jackson Mason's death was reported in The Monthly Magazine (vol 28, p. 538) At Lancaster, Jackson Mason esq. one of the aldermen of the borough, highly esteemed for his ability and integrity in his profession as a solicitor, 56.
