      Oil on canvas. This painting could be the preparatory sketch for the homonymous composition made by the painter Manuel Garcia “Hispaleto” that belongs to the collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado. This work was part of the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1881, being registered with number 226 of the catalog. The episode, narrated in chapter XXI of the second part of Don Quixote, illustrates the wedding of Camacho and Quiteria, an event to which Basilio also attends, pretending to have stabbed himself with a rapier with the intention of not having the ceremony and being able to marry his beloved. Measurements: 50 x 63 cm.

      MANUEL GARCÍA Y GARCÍA HISPALETO 1836 Sevilla 1898 Romería en carreta, Alto en el camino, La gallina ciega y Banquete de boda Firmados “M. García Cádiz" y fechados en 1859 y 1860. Manuel García Hispaleto siguió los pasos de su hermano Rafael, también pintor. Comenzó su formación en Academia sevillana, donde tuvo como profesores a los primeros románticos sevillanos y principales cultivadores del costumbrismo, entre 1848 y 1854. En otoño de ese mismo año se traslada a Madrid, donde continuaría con su formación antes de marchar a Roma como pensionado en 1863. En Italia, el pintor asimilaría todas las tendencias del momento, pintura de historia, academicismo, realismo, nazarenismo, etc. Este eclecticismo hará que su obra oscile constantemente entre una factura acabada, muy precisa, y otra más rápida y abocetada, siempre sin olvidar sus raíces sevillanas costumbristas. Tal es el caso de estas cuatro escenas de corte festivo y popular, representadas a través de una vibrante y colorida paleta que el pintor aplica a base de sueltas y atrevidas pinceladas, enaltecida aún más si cabe por los brillantes juegos lumínicos. Hispaleto estudia con maestría los gestos, la posición y la indumentaria de cada uno de los personajes sin olvidar el entorno, ya sea interior o en plena naturaleza, calculando con precisión el ritmo y el movimiento para captar la fugacidad del momento en el que se desarrolla la acción y detenerla en el tiempo como si de una fotografía se tratase.
