VICTOR MANUEL GARCIA 1897-1969 Havana, Cuba

Victor Manuel was one of the founders of the modem art movement in Cuba, a profound transformation resulting from the influence of the School of Paris and break with the Spanish-based Academics. In the context of this new movement, there was a re-vivification of national values and particularly Cuban themes which were reflected in the arts. In this framework Victor Manuel united international stylistic influences with landscapes and images from the heart of Cuba.

In 1910 Victor Manuel was enrolled in the San Alejandro School of Art and was invited to be an assistant teacher in drawing the following year. He participated in the annual Salon from 1917 – 1925 and signed his work “Manuel Garcia”. His work from this period reflects a strong influence by his teacher and mentor Leopoldo Romañach. He had his first one man show in 1924 at which point he was looking to distance himself from the complaisance of his academic training. Many reports reached Cuba after World War I regarding new artistic developments in Europe so he booked passage there in 1925 with the help of friends.

At the Louvre museum he had his first contact with the Great Masters and was particularly moved by the Italian Renaissance. He attended the Autumn Salon and the Salon of the Independents where he was particularly impressed by the work of Modigliani, Kisling, Vlamink, Utrillo, Matisse and Laurencin. While in Paris he started signing his work “Victor Manuel”. He returned to Havana in 1927 and had his first personal exhibit and went on to participate in the “Arte Nuevo” or “New Art” show which marked the beginning of modem painting in Cuba.

In 1929 Victor Manuel returned to Europe for one year and it was during this time in 1930 that he painted his most celebrated work, “Gitana Tropical”, which has become the symbol of his entire oeuvre. In it he depicts a young dreaming country girl with a window behind her looking out to a Cuban landscape in typical Victor Manuel style with a path winding between trees with dark trunks. This would come to represent hisnewly developed and distinctive style revolving around two central themes: portraits of women and landscapes.

VÍCTOR MANUEL GARCÍA VALDÉS (Havana, 1897 - 1969). "Portrait of a woman with a handkerchief, 1968. Pencil on paper. Signed and dated in the upper right corner. Measurements. 34 x 27 cm; 60 x 50 cm (frame). Provenance: Manuel Reguera Saumell collection, recognised as one of the great Cuban writers and playwrights of the 20th century. As the set of photographs accompanying this collection testify, Reguera forged close friendships with the leading exponents of Cuban art during the years he spent in his native country. It was then that Reguera, backed by the bond that united him with Amelia Peláez, Rene Portocarrero, Carlos Abela and Antonia Eiriz, began his facet as a collector, giving birth to what would become his personal collection. Qualified as the father of the Golden Age of Cuban painting, Víctor Manuel García trained at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana. He held his first solo exhibition until 1924, and the following year he travelled to Paris. He returned to Cuba in 1927, and that same year he took part in the exhibition of the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Havana, considered one of the starting points of modern Cuban painting. He then embarked again for Europe, embarking on a journey that took him to Spain and Belgium, returning to Cuba in 1929. That same year he created his most famous work, "La gitana tropical", popularly known as the "American Gioconda", which is now kept in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana. In 1935 he was awarded first prize at the Havana Lyceum Exhibition, and continued to hold exhibitions of his work both in Cuba and abroad. Victor Manuel's style was not monolithic, but evolved greatly throughout his life. His early paintings show a tendency to mix European styles with an earthy primitivism, an example of which is his piece La Gitana Tropical (1929). In the 1940s and 1950s, however, he adopted a more stylised look that became a hallmark of his work. During the last years of his life, his style became almost abstract, with portraits suggesting a close proximity to the aesthetics of Cubism. He was very inconsistent in signing his work, ranging from a simple "VICTOR MANUEL" in capital letters to a fluid and complicated script, and even used a pseudonym at one period of his life. He was eminently a portraitist of female faces, as well as a painter of landscapes, both rural and urban.

Measurements. 55,5 x 38 cm; 79 x 62,5 cm (frame). Provenance: Manuel Reguera Saumell collection, recognised as one of the great Cuban writers and playwrights of the 20th century. Aesthetically, the work has a naïve finish, which is understood in this way due to the artist's freedom in the way he composed this portrait, structured through planes, and the use of a colour with rounded, bright shades. The image seems to present a completely idealised scene of Cuba. In this work we can see a three-quarter portrait, where the artist presents us with a young woman whose features are softened by the use of curved lines and pastel colours. The girl looks directly at the viewer, adopting a direct gesture with regard to her relationship with the viewer. This type of portrait of young people with Cuban features and a brimming personality is one of the best examples of Victor Manuel's painting.
