          Nona Garcia (b. 1978) - Planted 13

          Est: ₱700,000 - ₱910,000

Planted 13 dated 2017 oil on wood 78" x 44 1/2" (198 cm x 113 cm) PROVENANCE: Arndt Art Agency, Planted, Berlin, January 19 - March 9, 2018 WRITE UP: The work titled Planted 13 hails from Nona Garcia’s Planted exhibit that was mounted in 2018 in Berlin. Each painting showcased a solitary object, meticulously chosen from one of two distinct categories: indigenous artifacts and rudimentary guns. At first glance, the minimalistic presentation may convey simplicity and directness, but delving deeper reveals layers of profound meaning. These objects transcend their modest appearance, carrying intricate significance ranging from environmental and sociopolitical implications to personal histories. According to Garcia herself: “It is a reflection of my direct environment. For the past four years, I’ve been living 250 kilometers away from Manila, in the mountains of the Cordillera. Here, you see clearly the relationship between man and nature. This area is also known for woodcarvings, from indigenous sculptures to homeware to souvenir items. I have been observing this for the past few years and have become fond of the material itself, as well as objects made out of it. In previous years, my paintings have been very large, almost mural-sized, and I wanted to go back to a more basic approach to painting.” The work, much like the others in the exhibit, goes beyond being a mere display of visual aesthetics; it serves as a multifaceted exploration into the interplay of objects, their inherent meanings, and the environmental and personal contexts in which they were brought to life. Garcia's artistic endeavor transforms seemingly ordinary subjects into a rich tapestry of stories, inviting viewers to engage with the intricacies and contemplate the broader implications embedded in each stroke of paint on wood. Sep. 09, 2023

Nona Garcia (b. 1978) - Hands of Faith

          Est: ₱220,000 - ₱286,000

Nona Garcia (b. 1978) Hands of Faith dated 2014 xray, aluminum lightbox overall size: 46" x 20" x 24" (117 cm x 51 cm x 61 cm) Nona Garcia, a multi-awarded Filipina artist, has produced a lot of traditional works in the form of large-scale photorealistic landscapes and surrealist figurative paintings. However, her claim to fame is undoubtedly her novel experiments with x-ray and light. In this aluminum lightbox piece titled Hands of Faith, the artist revealed her explorations on religious symbolisms with the use of the x-ray, the medium noted to be one of her defining and celebrated artistic trajectories. Her employment of unconventional technology when it comes to image- making allows her to explore new ways of seeing and understanding. In fact, the lot at hand embodies the core tenets of Garcia’s artistic philosophy. As observed here, the hands, which were implied to be used for faith such as prayers and genuflections, appear to be not from a human but a mannequin or a robot. The title is explicitly revelatory, guiding the viewer to understand the piece in an investigative manner, similar to how one would read an actual x-ray film. For her first international exhibit, Garcia presented a number of x-ray- based works that featured popular religious icons and figures. In doing so, she was able to deconstruct long-held beliefs and ideologies, especially those witnessed and dealt with firsthand. (Isabella Romarate)

Nona Garcia (b. 1978) - Drift, set of six

          Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Nona Garcia (b. 1978) Drift, set of six signed and dated 2018 (verso) oil on wood 12" x 14" (30 cm x 36 cm) each Imagination in Flight As one of the Philippines’ most lauded and acclaimed contemporary artists working today, Nona Garcia is particularly concerned with the role of art within the context of representation. Though Garcia’s works are known for their stark realism in the way she imbues her elements and subject-matter with intimate and nuanced details, the artist notes that these prima facie facets of her work are merely gateways towards an attempt at unveiling or understanding the essence of things. This particular set of pieces titled Drift was part of a joint exhibit together with artist Gregory Halili. According to the project’s curator Gary- Ross Pastrana “This image of converging water currents comes to mind in this somewhat unexpected encounter between artists Nona Garcia and Gregory Halili in Countercurrents, an exhibition that is buoyed not just by the tangential similarities in their respective practices but more so by the deeper and more arresting contrasts. Though both highly gifted painters, Garcia and Halili inhabit opposing ends of the spectrum, most evidently in terms of scale.” Countercurrents was not only an exploration between contrasts in material or subject, but in the very approach of the two artists involved. Drift is a set of six oil on wood paintings, all of which feature images of driftwood. The pieces are painted in such a way that gives the illusion that the driftwood are placed squarely on top familiar wooden surfaces; in which the effect gives way to its true dimensions when the viewer takes a closer look. This particular approach explores the coming together of two similar but contrasting materials. The first is Garcia’s choice of canvas which is wood veneer. Though sourced from nature, the material has been repurposed and worked-on by man that it has seemingly lost its original qualities, thus resembling a uniform and almost clinical look that resembles familiar industrial ephemera. Meanwhile the driftwood represents the canvas’ polar opposite. A material primarily defined by its exposure to the elements, it seemingly showcases a state of being free from mankind’s intervention; a glimpse at a world beyond our own senses. By putting these two elements together, Garcia has undoubtedly created an intriguing piece that humbles our own understanding and our place in the world. (J.D.)

Through her multidisciplinary approach, she is able to tackle these themes through a variety of methods such as transparency, concealment, and framing. Though she has produced more traditional works in the form of large scale photorealistic landscapes and surrealist figurative paintings, Nona Garcia’s claim to fame is undoubtedly her novel experiments with xray and light. Her use of unconventional technology when it comes to image-making allows her to explore new ways of seeing and understanding. Her first international show, she presented a number of x-ray-based works that featured popular religious icons and figures. By doing so, Garcia is able to deconstruct long-held beliefs and ideologies, especially those witnessed and dealt with first hand. Since then, Garcia has expanded her artistic imagery to include common ephemera and found objects.   In this piece entitled Revelation (17) Garcia utilizes a popular Catholic figure in order to deconstruct the various aspects of faith and belief. The title itself is explicitly revelatory, guiding the viewer to understand the piece in a segmented and investigative manner, similar to how one would read an actual x-ray film. Her explorations on the symbolism of using the x-ray for her works, specifically, is noted to be one of her defining and celebrated artistic trajectories. A Series of Fractures, a wall installation of light boxes made out of x-ray plates, is composed of selected everyday manmade and biological materials that are made intriguing under the x-ray. This was exhibited in her show titled Fractures at the West Gallery in 2010, an exhibit in which she chronicled and examined disorder and disarray that can be, according to writer Cocoy Lumbao, “personal legends of breakage and calamity.” In this particular installation piece, Garcia masterfully reveals a shared essence beneath surface distinctions as the x-ray films blur rigid outlines and capture both light flares and movement. By altering the filter through which unlike objects are perceived, she depicts transformations and reconstructions of new forms, hence giving them new identities—familiar found and destroyed objects altered into abstract forms in various sizes. Nona Garcia earned her BFA (Major in Painting) at the University of the Philippines – Diliman. Some of her awards include the CCP Thirteen Artists Award in 2003 and the Grand Prize at the Philip Morris Group of Companies ASEAN Art Awards in 2000 in Singapore. Garcia has also held solo shows in the country and participated in numerous exhibitions in China, Italy, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Korea, and Japan. Estimate in USD $8000-$10400

NONA GARCIA (b. 1978), Pink Heart, 2011, Photo assemblage

          Est: RM4,000 - RM6,000

Nona Garcia claims her ground as one of Philippines' exquisite painters depicting desolated spaces and ambiguous absence. A sense of abandonment prevails amidst the illusionary reality that she attempts to capture. In the context of Pink Heart, an image of a discarded single seater neon pink and electric blue sofa is captured in its solidarity by the streets. The photo assemblage appropriates the technique of paper tole, a method consists of a picture built by cutting out certain parts of different prints of an identical image, then by shaping, layering, and gluing the pieces to the base print using neutral cure silicone, a three dimensional effect is created. The artwork title is appropriated by the heart shape from the tear on the sofa's backrest. Pink Heart was displayed in a collaborative exhibition of photography-based works between Nona Garcia and contemporary Filipino artist MM Yu in Kuala Lumpur (2011). Nona Garcia obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting at the University of the Philippines. She has held numerous solo exhibitions in the Philippines namely Points of Departure (2007); Planted Landscapes (2008); Synonyms (2010); Fractures (2010) and Somewhere Else (2012).
