Children Along The Narrow Road signed and dated 2013 (lower right) oil on canvas 72” x 72” (183 cm x 183 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot EXHIBITED Pintô Art Museum, Better Days Ahead, Antipolo City, September 15 - October 8, 2013 WRITE UPMark Andy Garcia’s works, once described by art critic Alice Guillermo as “coming from the depths of his being,” are characterized by their deep muted colors and broad brush strokes. In his more than a decade-long career, Garcia views his art as a form of communication with his early works focusing on his own life experiences. His large-scale paintings act like a diary entry in painting form, showing glimpses of his background from his prior work experience as an overseas Filipino worker in the Middle East to his spiritual awakening in a foreign land. Early in his career, Garcia posed a question before he started painting, stating that he aimed to answer the question in his work. This led to a collection of deeply personal paintings, the landscape transforming into allusions for the human psyche. In this particular lot, Children Along the Narrow Road, Garcia depicts a narrow road in full bloom with three children drawn at the forefront of the painting. The work shows his signature earthy color palette with pops of green and yellow, emulating a warm and vibrant atmosphere that reminds its viewers of childhood nostalgia. Through his child-like and naive approach to painting as well as his mastery at visualizing the human psyche,Garcis is a master at urging its audience to look inwards and connect with his insightful works. Sunflowers 5 signed and dated 2021 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 24" (61 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Finale Art File and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The oil painting at hand, a still life with seven sunflowers in a vase, is among the works of Mark Andy Garcia that pay homage to Vincent van Gogh and his sunflowers. In both their depictions of sunflowers, Garcia and van Gogh share a love of light and colors that convey specific attitudes. Also known as the antitrend painter, he informed in an article from Manila Bulletin that his pieces focus on telling stories that he himself understands. His still life images take inspiration from his personal experiences. “It’s important to me that I only paint what’s within my territory. That’s why I value my experiences because these are what influences me on what I am going to create,” Garcia shared in the said article published in 2021, which is also the year this piece was dated. “When you do things that are not naturally you, your audience will feel that your work is just a copycat.” Garibay steers this work titled Liyab. Here, the artist depicts a woman with long brown hair and an aloof facial expression. She wears a white dress and holds a burning paper. Is it a letter from a past lover? Is it a hidden page from her diary? Does it contain dark secrets about her personal life? But it remains clear that the woman wants to burn things from her past that she no longer wants to be associated with. Her cold expression shows that she is without remorse in alienating her past from her present and even her future. In this regard, Garibay shows fire’s beautiful contradiction: a destructive force that engenders something renewed, resurrected, and revitalized. The composition is like a window or an enchanted mirror in which one can peek through the thoughts and emotions of the subject. As such, Garibay, the compelling storyteller, offers a multitude of perspectives in this thought-provoking piece. (A.M.) In 2021, Garcia was included in five group exhibitions, among those was “Art Fair Philippines” at Silverlens Gallery. Makati City, Philippines. (P.I.R.)

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Life of An Artist 1 signed and dated 2020 (lower right) oil on canvas 72" x 108" (183 cm x 274 cm) PROVENANCE West Gallery, Quezon City EXHIBITED West Gallery, Mark Andy Garcia: To Live, Quezon City, June 25 - July 25, 2020 Over time, the artist and his oeuvres evolve. The earlier works of Mark Andy Garcia are reflective of his time abroad as a neophyte painter refining his craft. And, upon his return to his homeland, he was met with tragedy and crisis. However, after the brazen and anxious beginnings, there is fruition. As more time went by, his paintings grew in brightness. The process is maintained, but there are conscious changes in structure and substantiation. Life of an Artist I pay homage to Vincent van Gogh and his sunflowers. In their depictions of sunflowers, Garcia and van Gogh share a love of light and colors that convey specific attitudes. The oil painting at hand is included in the To Live exhibition of Garcia, which was described as “a peaceful strain.” The works in the show are made of generous layers of oil paint, and their rich visual texture emerges through thin and thick strokes, back and forth on the other. Indeed, the artist has grown in self-assurance, drawing and painting lightly, even when he is emotionally inspired. (P.I.R.)

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Homage to Giorgio Morandi signed and dated 2022 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 48" (122 cm x 122 cm) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Manila At a glance, there may seem nothing special about the oeuvres of Mark Andy Garcia. However, as an artist who believes that all he does is rooted in the word of God, he seeks to visualize the human psyche as a particular condition arising from autobiographical accounts. Thus, the deliberate echo of the spiritual, theological, and evangelical is ever-resounding in his pieces. “I paint the belief, the emotion, the feeling. It’s on the boundary of abstraction,” said Garcia about the evolution of his art. What he described is manifested in his depictions of alluring landscapes, flowers in vases, and figures immersed in water or surrounded by nature. For this oil painting, on the other hand, his chosen subject was bottles. For Garcia, art is very personal, painting is a reflective practice. He describes it as his lifestyle and his path in life. As he matures, so does his art. His highly-textured works attest to an intuitive and gestural manner of painting. His approach towards painting has a somewhat childlike sincerity to it, with an undercurrent of religious intensity that churns both his content and brushwork. The expressionistic marks and details on Garcia’s canvases reveal the painter’s presence and persona. In 2022, when this piece was made, Garcia held a solo show titled “In Due Time” at the West Gallery and was also included in ArtFair Philippines at the Silverlens Gallery. (P.I.R.)

            Est: ₱80,000 - ₱104,000

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Untitled signed and dated 2019 (lower right) acrylic on canvas 24" x 24" (61 cm x 61 cm) The alluring landscapes of Mark Andy Garcia portray a horizon that appears like a demarcation between land and heaven. Regarded as intuitive, gestural, and expressionist, the marks and textures on his canvases are evidence of the painter’s hand, presence, and persona. His painterly style serves to impart emotional honesty to paintings, resembling entries in journals. In the old works of Garcia, narratives are abundant. He used to tell stories within the confines of the visual plane, a segment of his life in every oeuvre. Later on, he came to the realization that his audiences do not need to know everything and that he has to keep parts of his life private. Without having to retell his experiences on his canvases, his subjects become representations of the inner self. His works and exhibitions can be understood as both autobiographical and theological. Titles like “New Beginnings,” “Stand Still,” “Human Nature,” “Blessings in Disguise,” and “Two-edged Sword” can be interpreted as an analysis of the doctrines of the Christian faith as personal declarations and revelations. In 2019, the year this piece was made, Garcia held two solo exhibitions titled “Chest To Heart” and “Promised Land.” (P.I.R.)

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Better Days Ahead signed and dated 2013 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 48 (122 cm x 122 cm) EXHIBITED Pintô Art Museum, Better Days Ahead, Antipolo, September 15 - October 8, 2013 The oeuvres of Mark Andy Garcia evoke existential meanings and past recollections abound in encounters with people and nature, imparting honesty of the heart that acts like entries in a diary. His paintings are often surreal and filled with an emotional depth that speaks to their spectator. The philosophy of the fine artist reflects in his technique in colors, shapes, and intense textures. A piece that features the dream-like painterly style of Garcia, Better Days Ahead portrays a scenery of colorful flowers, lush trees, and a bright blue sky – it comforts you with the image of the Spring season, a symbol of new beginnings. He detailed that in his landscape paintings, the horizon divides the land and sky with trees as pathways to Heaven. Garcia has accepted that his creations are rooted in the word of God. For him, the fusion of art and faith finds form in pure expressiveness with the materials which act as a sincere acknowledgment to the Lord in this life of pain and pleasure. A contemporary artist devoted to this craft and belief, Garcia's paintings and exhibitions are autobiographical and theological. Titles like “Promised Land,” “New Beginnings,” “Human Nature,” and “Blessings in Disguise” can be interpreted as analyses of the doctrines of the Christian faith. In 2013, the year this painting was signed, Garcia held an exhibit titled "Better Days Ahead" at the Pinto Art Museum. (P.I.R.)

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Prayer signed and dated 2020 (lower right) oil on canvas 47" x 47" (119 cm x 119 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by West Gallery and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot EXHIBITED: West Gallery, To Live, Quezon City, June 25 - July 25, 2020 The works of Mark Andy Garcia are marked by a sense of wonder and spirituality. For Garcia, a certain level of transcendence is needed as he explores innocence and memory, ways of seeing and personal modes of creation. His brushwork and layers of spontaneous splatters of color are consistent, and he unapologetically taps into personal recollections to produce deeply informed pieces. In this piece titled Prayer, the artist seemingly relates the act of both remembering and reflecting to the personal and ritualistic act of prayer. The way Garcia produces his works creates a hazy and almost dreamlike effect that mirrors how memories often appear to us; in abstract and vague forms in which emotions either cloud or exaggerate certain elements. But Garcia also uses the fact that despite the obtuseness of our memories as an accurate method of recollection, through this work he emphasizes how we still cling to these notions in the same way faith operates; through unclear yet powerful ideas that do not adhere to any certain logic but the human belief. The critic Alice Guillermo has noted that among the contemporary artists in the local art scene, Garcia is the most autobiographical, as his works are likened to glimpses of his journal of personal experiences. Hubo't Hubad Tayo Sa Mundong Ito signed and dated 2012 (lower right) oil on canvas 72" x 48" (183 cm x 122 cm) The unorthodox painting style of Mark Andy Garcia acts as a visual biographical note – one that conveys an honest emotion that resulted from the circumstances he succumbed to. From his experiences as an overseas contract worker in Saudi Arabia to the passing of his father, Garcia has since offered his art to a spirit that pays homage to memories and recollections. Garcia’s artistic consciousness developed at an early age. In Painting Memories, Alice Guillermo describes Garcia’s art as one that “comes from the depths of his being.” The celebrated art critic further added that Garcia “weaves the whole course of life in his paintings, its childhood joys, its later sorrows, even its personal blows, but he is one artist who proffers a ready center of solace to all those wallowing in pain and sorrow.” Garcia won the Grand Prize at the 2007 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence. Art critic Alice Guillermo pointed out that Garcia is known to be the most autobiographical of all artists, and experiencing his works can be likened to encountering a journal of personal experiences. Inherent in his works is an outpour of colors, shapes, and textures, exhibiting unrelenting expression and emotional depths. Thus, Garcia’s works are often akin to dreams—surreal, hazy, but imbued with an unmistakable emotional depth that resonates with even the hardest of hearts. Garcia’s artistic philosophy can also be seen in his technique. The artist is widely recognized for his highly- textured pieces that exhibit his gestural, instinct-driven brushstrokes. Garcia’s eclectic and erratic style adds another dimension to his works, relating the contextual substance of his pieces with their physical manifestations.

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) Untitled signed and dated 2010 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 36” (121 cm x 91 cm)   WRITE UP: The works of Mark Andy Garcia perfectly exemplifies the radical shift of the art world from the seemingly formalist inclinations of the previous modernist style to the more personal and inwards approach of the contemporary era. Affected by the continuous onslaught of a fast-paced and consumerist landscape, Mark Andy Garcia draws upon his own personal experience to create meaningfully unique and moving masterpieces. Inspired by his personal meanings and recollections, Garcia creates idyllic and lush landscapes and still-lifes that combine real-world elements with the moving inner-machinations of his mind and soul. Though Garcia is less concerned with technique and more concerned with his works’ context and message, his mastery over his craft is undeniable. Each element of this piece is meticulously arranged and executed in such a way that the emotions and meanings hidden within hint at themselves upon merely a cursory glance. This piece shows his attention to the process of coming to terms with one’s feelings and thoughts about change, an inevitable part of life that must be accepted in the long run. It is a cathartic creative endeavor, nostalgic in its visual impact.

Mark Andy Garcia (b. 1984) No Wind Could Be Felt signed and dated 2016 (lower right) oil on canvas Filipino visual artist Mark Andy Garcia is widely recognized for his highly-textured pieces that exhibit his gestural, instinct-driven brushstrokes. In her essay on Garcia, art critic Alice Guillermo describes him as “one of the most spontaneous of artists, using a painterly style that is wholly expressive of his zest for life and his creative energy in which all life in the world is intermingled. He revels in a restless and colorful energy that expands in all directions and opens into new dimensions.” No Wind Could Be Felt is reminiscent of his 2013–14 works in which he draws on childhood experiences, being surrounded with the orchestration of nature upon growing up. He depicts both the lushness and gloom of nature with his nostalgic, personal touch that results in resonant works such as this piece. Estimate in USD $6000-$7800

Mark Andy Garcia - (b.1984) - The Painter (Self Portrait)

            Est: ₱100,000 - ₱130,000

Mark Andy Garcia (b.1984) The Painter (Self Portrait) signed and dated 2016 (lower right) oil on canvas The composition is marked by an intrinsic monumentality and agitated clarity. The subject’s pose is very casual, both knees raised. A relaxed, introverted mood underscored by the back view of a canvas on an easel pervades the scene. The simplicity of the composition is deceptive, for its structure is extremely refined. Rough areas of color limited to a few intense hues, and closed contours establish a compositional rhythm. Mark Andy Garcia’s approach towards painting has something of a child-like sincerity to it, charged with an undercurrent of emotional intensity that churns both his content and brushwork, whether for lighter or darker autobiographical periods, and to portray joy or despair. The anti-trend, painterly style of Garcia serve to impart emotional honesty to paintings that operate like entries in journals. His various one-man shows since 2008 have detailed his life as an overseas contractual worker in Saudi Arabia, laid bare his emotional anguish over the passing of his father, and operated as keepsakes of memories of his daily life. These bring out various intense transformative experiences and also more ordinary, blissful moments. Garcia graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising from the Technological University of The Philippines, Manila in 2005. He is also the recipient of many awards such as the Grand Prize for 2007 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence, the National Art Competition (Oil Painting Category); Juror’s Choice Award of Excellence, 2008 Philippine Art Awards National. He was recently chosen as one of the recipients of the 2015 Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
