    • Jose Garcia Narezo Surrealist Ink Drawing dated 1943
      May. 18, 2019

Jose Garcia Narezo Surrealist Ink Drawing dated 1943

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Surrealist ink drawing by Latin American artist Jose Garcia Narezo. Untitled Dated 1943 Media: Ink drawing on paper. Measures 13.5" by 16.5" sight size, and 21.5" by 24" by 1.25" overall including framing. Notes: In this work Narezo creates a dark and brooding seascape-like scene with a dark sky and mountain range in the background. The remains of a ship wrecked wooden sailing ship are cast high on a pillared rock formation, and what appears to be a large cloaked figure rising up from the sea yet tethered as to keep it moored in place, the figure having a weather vain for a head. Further in the horizon a masted wooden sailing ship appears as a sign of hope with clearing sky behind it. In the light colored foreground are sea shells and a cactus growing on a square, manmade platform. All created with black ink on paper, the lighter areas having no pigment just bare paper. Housed in a contemporary frame under UV plexiglass. About the artist: Jose Garcia Narezo, (Mexican 1922-1994), was born a deaf-mute. Jose was the son of Spanish art critic and painter Gabriel García Maroto. Jose's sister became a well-known poet and politician. Jose's family moved back and forth between Spain and Mexico, and eventually Jose became a naturalized citizen and a well-known surrealist artist in Mexico. Jose exhibited his works in Europe, the Americas and Asia. His most important individual exhibitions were held at: the Arden Gallery in New York in 1938; the House of Culture, Havana, Cuba 1939; the Stendahl Galleries, Los Angeles, California, 1939; the de Young Museum, San Francisco, California, 1944; the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego, California, 1945; and the White Memorial Museum, San Antonio, Texas, 1945.
