      Caleb J Garbrand (British, 1748-1794) Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders, in maroon jacket, white stock and grey wig inscribed and dated to the right of the sitter "Garbrand Pt 17(?8)2" oil on canvas h:74.50 w:61.50 cm Provenance: Burfield Hall, Wymondham, Norfolk Caleb Garbrand was born in London to a family of Jamaican origin and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1771. He exhibited from 1773 to 1780 at the Society of Artists of Great Britain, the Free Society of Artists and the Royal Academy, London (1775-1780). His work is at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire, and the Bowes Museum, County Durham. In 1783 Garbrand travelled to India where he gave up painting to take up a career in trade. He died in Chittagong, India, in 1794.
