Lance Humphries, Daniel Garber: A Catalogue Raisonné, Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, 2006, Vol II., p. 113, no. P334 (illustrated). Lot Essay The 1920s marked a period of "relaxed maturity" for Daniel Garber, who gradually moved away from his large decorative compositions to focus on smaller works, which granted him a wider audience of collectors and allowed him to show a more personal and subjective side of his beloved Bucks County, where he and his family had moved in 1907. Mary Maxwell's House fits this category since, according to the Catalogue Raisonné of the artist's work, Mrs. Maxwell was a neighbor of the Garbers as her house was located across from Cuttalossa Road. The reference to a neighbor's name in the title of the painting is something Garber did often in the 1920s, which was a way to pay tribute to his new lifestyle in the countryside, thus making the painting more intimate and true, but also more exotic to New York crowds.  The present work offers a full picture of Bucks County. Through the choice of a portrait format, which accentuates the verticals of the birch and sycamore trees, and the slightly elevated vantage point, which creates an unusual bird's eye view, the viewer is fully immersed in the landscape, enclosed in a safe space in which the milk wagon slowly making its way across the dirt path becomes the epitome of the simplest, happiest, and purest way of life.  It appears Garber depicted the same location on several occasions, and in varying seasons, as it appears in Autumn Colors (cat. P 733) and Glen Cuttalossa (cat. P 517).

Daniel Garber (American, 1880-1958) - The Stream

            Est: $15,000 - $250,000

Daniel Garber (American, 1880-1958) - The Stream Signed and dated ‘DANIEL GARBER 1902.’ bottom center left; also titled and with original preparer's label verso, oil on board 8 x 9 ½ in. (20.3 x 24.1cm) Provenance Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, New York. Private Collection, New Hope, Pennsylvania. Exhibition “Daniel Garber: Romantic Realist,” Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 26-April 8, 2007. Literature Artist's Record Book I, p. 1, line 12. Artist's Record Book II, p. 4, no. 24. Lance Humphries, Daniel Garber: Catalogue Raisonné, Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, 2006, Vol. II, p. 28, P 64 (illustrated). Lot Essay Of the nearly 170 oils Garber painted between 1900 and 1905, only approximately 30 have been identified today as the artist famously destroyed his early work, thus making the present oil a particularly rare and compelling example of the artist's bourgeoning technique. The Stream dates from the first years Garber spent in Pennsylvania, when he was enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and associated with the Darby Summer Art School, an outdoor academy fun by Thomas Anshutz and Hugh Breckenridge in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. At the time, Garber sketched from nature in small-format oils, which he then intended to develop into full-size versions in his studio, thus following the pure Academic method. While works from the same period show a uniform, monochromatic palette and a penchant for Tonalism, the present work denotes a bold, dramatic accent which is visible in the thick, swirling impasto as well as the dramatic light effects, and the haunting silhouette of the tree at right. Executed in a palette of muddy greens and golden yellows, the landscape stands out as an apparition, channeling the tormented views artists such as Weir or Anshutz completed around the same time and which, for a time, may have inspired Garber before he sailed for Europe in 1905 and changed his style altogether.

Housed in its original Frederick Harer frame.  Provenance The Artist. Brigham, Maine, 1987.  Acquired directly from the above. Private Collection, Main Line, Pennsylvania. Exhibition “One Hundred and Twenty-Second Annual Exhibition," Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 30-March 20, 1927, no. 308. Literature Artist's Record Book I, p. 36, lines 7-12. “Artist Turned Down Europe to Paint Delaware Valley: Beauty too Abundant to Paint Shabbiness Says Daniel Garber,” in Sunday Times-Advertiser, Trenton, New Jersey, November 28, 1948. Lance Humphries, Daniel Garber: Catalogue Raisonné, Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, 2006. Vol. II, p. 191, P 518 (illustrated) Lot Essay The Lot will be accompanied by an original letter dated October 4, 1940 by Daniel Garber to Mrs. Tatum, the first owner of the work, as well as the original receipt, and bill of sale from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' 1927 selling exhibition.  While Edward Redfield, Charles Rosen and Fern Coppedge all enjoyed depicting the countryside blanketed in the snow (in fact winter landscapes are by far the most common subject among the Bucks County painters), Daniel Garber developed a taste for glowing landscapes set in the spring, summer or fall. As such, his winter scenes are considered rare. However, on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at Macbeth Gallery in 1931, the accompanying catalogue noted that Garber felt “that the earth forms are very handsome in late autumn and winter; when the anatomy of the ground is so defined in beautifully toned planes of dead grass, exposed stone, and handsome lines and curves of the turf."  One such example of this seasonal predisposition is Ferry Road, a canvas painted en plein air from a hill at Point Pleasant, which offers a steep view of the Valley of Tinicum Creek where a seemingly deserted and isolated house overlooks a stone quarry on the other side of the icy-blue Delaware River. The present work is one of the earliest winter landscapes Garber ever painted. It is also the first of a series of several canvases in which the artist adopts this particular viewpoint–"the finest achievement of his career" according to Kathleen Foster. He would return to a nearby site in the similarly composed Sumac Lane and Ferry Road - Springtime. Although seemingly simple in its composition, Ferry Road relies on a sophisticated arrangements of shapes, lines and patterns. While the tracks on the snowy road invite our eye into the composition, which the verticals of the surrounding trees and house frame, the horizontal river and quarries ultimately block our progression into the picture plane, and force us to go up, which accentuates the layering effect of the painting–Daniel's typical ‘tapestry' device. The result is a very solid and stately image whose muted palette (made of creams, soft grays, lavenders, blues and soft pinks) accentuates its overall unity and harmony.

Lance Humphries, Daniel Garber: Catalogue Raisonné, Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, 2006. Vol. II, cat. P 707, p. 252 (illustrated). Lot Essay Although Garber included figures in his landscapes early on, they often just blended with their surroundings, and acted as props on a stage. They would appear more prominently in the landscapes the artist would paint in the mid-to-late 1930s, this time acting as an important device of Garber's philosophy, which espoused the ancestral virtue of communion with the Earth through labor and farming. In The Blue House, Garber depicts several characters–five in total. While not all shown engaged in an activity (only one figure is actively raking), they are harmoniously integrated in the landscape and become an essential part of it. Their presence along the pathway accentuates the strong horizontal of the scene, while the colors of their clothes and garments complement (in some instances match) nature's surrounding hues. Contrary to his earlier and much more decorative canvases, the present work is anchored in reality and aims to depict the ordinary and cyclical nature of life. Here, Garber stresses the human connection with the land and the successful cohabitation between society and nature. To that end, the titular blue house occupies much of the space, and becomes the element around which the composition revolves. Nestled between the river and the road, the house is surrounded by nature–at times blocking it (such as the background hills), other times being blocked by it (such as the imposing sycamore tree at center). Through its presence, the house showcases man's successful integration in the landscape, whose bounty and beauty is, in turn, revealed and enhanced by his hard work. The painting becomes a representation of spring and rebirth. Aside from the bright hues of cyans, pinks, greens and oranges, we notice the foreground crop is slowly flowering, while the tree bears leaves; Mother Nature will soon reward the inhabitants' hard work by providing them food and shadow.  The result is a serene, enchanting scene that cajoles the viewer, and offers a vision of rural happiness. According to Lance Humphries, “in these depictions of small-town communities living in harmony with one another and their surroundings, Garber must have believed that his painting now meshed with the ideals of the New Deal's Works Progress Administration artists, whose mission was to glorify and celebrate ordinary American life, especially the everyday aspects of local and regional culture.”

Provenance The Artist. The Estate of the Artist. Acquired directly from the above in 1968. Collection of J. Marshall Cole, New Hope, Pennsylvania. By descent in the family. Private Collection, Pennsylvania. Collection of Heidi Bingham Stott, Florida. Freeman's, sale of June 14, 2020, lot 45. Acquired directly from the above sale. Private Collection, Pennsylvania.  Literature Artist's Record Book I, line 21, p. 79 (entry added posthumously by John Franklin Garber). Lance Humphries, Daniel Garber: Catalogue Raisonné, Hollis Taggart Galleries, New York, 2006. vol. II, cat. P 659, p. 237. Lot Essay September Morning uses the typical pastel-like and more colorful tones of Garber's compositions from the late 1930s. As usual, the work features isolated houses and farm buildings in the distance, all slightly off-center. The scene takes place amidst overlapping hills, with not much space for the sky to peer through. Instead, Garber focuses his attention on the foreground, a stage-like arena populated by peaceful cows that act as the main characters of an idyllic play, which the viewer can embrace in a single glance. The work is devoid of any human presence; automobiles and telephone and electric poles have been removed so that the viewer is confronted solely with the solitary buildings and grazing animals. Indeed, cows and barns appear to dot the landscape in an organic way, as if their presence in the scene is both logical and irreplaceable. By doing so, September Morning speaks to Garber's ongoing fascination with a simple, secluded way of life that does not involve too many human souls, and to his conscious rejection of city life, especially in Philadelphia, which he left in the early years of the century and visited only when necessary.
