Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and image; slight time-staining at edges. Located in Auvergne, Vichy was the largest and most prestigious French spa. Its mineral waters were considered curative for a host of maladies, and "treatment" was sought there by members of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie. Of the many posters promoting travel to the spa, this rare image by Tanconville is one of the most elegant. The fashionable tender scene in the central square of the main spa is bathed in sunlight, and Tanconville plays delicately with the shadows to add a further level of charm and delight.

Original Vintage PLM Train Poster to Pelvoux by Henri Tanconville 1895

This early French travel poster for Pelvoux was commissioned by the railway company known as PLM (Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris Ã Lyon et Ã la MÃ©diterranÃ©e). Pelvoux is a former commune in the Hautes-Alps department. The poster features Frenchmen in Napoleonic uniforms alongside horses, marching into the forefront of the poster. In the distance, a snow-covered Mont Pelvoux appears with lines of men walking towards the small French town. On the bottom right of the poster, a map of the appears, demonstrating the route and pricing of the railway. PLM was a French railway company that began between 1858 and 1862. The PLM (Compagnie des Chemins de fer de Paris a Lyon et a la Mediterranee) operated chiefly in the south-east of France, with main transit lines connected to Paris and Cote dâAzur through Dijon, Lyon and Marseille. (Wikipedia). Tanconville is the pseudonym of French painter and illustrator Henry Ganier (1845-1936). After retiring as a Lieutenant in the Franco-German war, Ganier began creating illustrations and paintings, specializing in military subject matter and uniform. Towards the late 1800âs, Tanconville began producing Alsatian postcards and posters for the PLM railway company. Tanconvilleâs most well-known works are posters commissioned by PLM for French cities such as Vichy, Evian, Brides-les-Baines and Le Mont-Blanc. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
