      Portrait of a gentleman . Signed and dated 1833 lower right. Remnants of an old number on the stretcher verso. Oil on canvas. 19.8 x 15.5 cm. Restored. Craquelure. Minor damage to frame (27 x 21.5 cm). According to the information given by the consignor, the sitter is Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854).

In the course of the industrialization, many Swiss citizens came to prosperity and therefore appreciated the artist for his great skills in rendering their portraits a very special and personal touch. The painting is signed and illegibly dated in the center to the right ‘Gangyner 18[84]’. It is verso numbered ‘No. 236’. The paint surface shows stronger abrasions with punctual losses of material, especially along the edges. There are three tiny holes in the lower third of the canvas, which are verso supported with small pieces of fabric. The gilt frame shows small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 62 x 50.5 cm and the size of the stretcher is 57 x 43 cm. Georg Anton Gangyner (1807-1876) The artist Georg Anton Gangyner studied at the Art Academies in Paris and Munich. Since 1835, he worked as a drawing teacher in Switzerland and privately focused on landscape and portrait painting. In 1852, he moved to his city of birth called Lachen, where he successfully settled as a professional portraitist. The Marchmuseum dedicated the artist a major retrospective in 2011/12.
