JAMES GANDON (1743-1823) One of the leading architects to have worked in Ireland in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-centuries. His better known works include The Custom House, the Four Courts, King's Inn in Dublin and Emo Court in Co. Laois. Rare A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Dublin, Sept. 12, 1788, to painter Paul Sanby, in part: "...Where there is a will there is a Way. Says the Old Adage for notwithstanding, I am changing the Situation of part of the elements by Draining and Digging for Foundations and deeply as I am engaged in Emboweling the Earth, I cannot let slip any favourable occasion that offers to shake an old friend by the Hand and ask him how He does notwithstanding great Hurry of Business and pursuit after Riches & Fame. Of myself I can only Just Say from the Quantity of Water I discharge from my Works, that I go on swimmingly, and must refer you to Mr. Hamilton who has kindly undertaking to give you this for further particulars concerning I, and shall now enquire about You and Your better part...". In an unusual cryptic postscript, Gandon suddenly adds: "Wrote this after a few hours notice This 12th Sept 1766. A word to the Wise Do you ever see a certain person". Paul Sandby (1731-1809) was an English mapmaker turned landscape painter in watercolors, who, along with his older brother Thomas, became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. Lightly toned, with original integral address leaf bearing remnants of red wax seal, very good.

CAMPBELL, Colen (1676-1729). Vitruvius Britannicus; or The British Architect, containing the plans, elevations, and sections of the regular buildings, both publick and private, in Great Britain. [Volumes IV-V a continuation by John Woolfe (d. 1793) and James Gandon (1743-1823)]. London: [1751?]-1767-1771. 5 volumes, 2° (578 x 388mm), parallel text in French and English, 2pp. subscriber's list in vol.IV, 2pp. subscriber's list in vol.V. Engraved titles in English and French, 4 engraved dedications and 386 plates, uncut. Numbered according to volume and bound as follows: I. engraved title, dedication and 84 plates (14 folding); II. engraved title and 74 plates (17 folding); III. engraved title, dedication and 74 plates (23 folding); IV. engraved title, dedication and 79 plates (19 folding); V. engraved title, dedication and 75 plates, 23 double-page (occasional spotting and light soiling to outer margins, small marginal tears, old vertical creasing), contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, expertly rebacked to style, with original red morocco title labels laid down (extremities rubbed, covers scuffed). Provenance: Lord Alington (armorial bookplate). A FINE UNCUT COPY OF THIS CELEBRATED WORK, the first pattern book of English architecture, focussing attention on the architectural merit rather than the topographical situation of the nation's great buildings. It began as a venture by a publishing group of booksellers who adopted Campbell, a skilled architectural draughtsman, as their author only shortly before publication of the first edition of volume I in 1715. In this set, volumes I-III are third editions, volumes IV-V first editions. The names of the booksellers and the original dates of publication have been erased from the engraved titles of volumes I-III. Most plates in volume I are unsigned, though a few are signed by Campbell as artist. The plates in volumes II-III are largely by Henry Hulsbergh after Campbell, while those in volumes IV-V, published in 1767-1771, are after Gandon, Woolfe and William Chambers. Cf. Fowler 76 (first editions of vols.I-IV); Harris 103 & 945; Millard British, 10 & 94. (5)
