      GALTON FRANCIS: (1822-1911)

      Est: €300 - €400

GALTON FRANCIS: (1822-1911) English polymath, a proponent of social Darwinism, eugenics and scientific racism. A.L.S., Francis Galton, three pages, 8vo, Field Side, Grasmere, near Windermere (Cumbria), 17th August 1866, to Revd. Joseph Crompton. Galton states 'It will be quite sufficient that you should let me have the documents of which you speak, at Nottingham' and continues to inform his correspondent 'There seems no doubt but that the Association will elect to go to Dundee in 1867 and there is considerable probability that either Norwich or Exeter will be the alternative for 1868', further remarking 'Let me call your attention to the importance of the Norwich deputation being able to give (a) full & reliable account of the accommodation they can offer in the way of section rooms and especially of that afforded to their largest room, or rooms, for the General meeting & the soirees. There is considerable apprehension that a meeting at Norwich would be a small one. Have you any facts that point to a more favourable conclusion' and concluding 'Lastly, have you enlisted the sympathy of Dr Hooker in your behalf. His advocacy if he afforded it, would be a very powerful help to you (I believe I am right in supposing that he is intimately connected with Norwich)'. Some very light age wear, a few minor stains, and very slight traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG Joseph Crompton (1813-1878) English clergyman, founder of the 'Free Christian Church' and rector of St. Lawrence church in Norfolk. Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911) British botanist and explorer, director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and Charles Darwin's closest friend. Hooker acted as President of the British Association at its Norwich meeting of 1868, when his address was remarkable for its championship of Darwinian theories. The British Science Association, as it is known today, is a learned society founded in 1831 to aid in the promotion and development of science.

London: J. & A. Churchill, 1881.8vo (218 x 137 mm). 4 albumen photographic prints. Original cloth-backed wrappers, unopened. Minor chipping to spine ends, library labels and stampsProvenance: Texas Medical Association Library (stamp).EARLY EXAMPLES OF COMPOSITE PORTRAITURE. These two works are important examples of Galton's early forays into composite portraiture, a practice in which he combined multiple images of different subjects into a single blended image. He hoped through such blending to reveal different 'types,' particularly the criminal and the sick. This technique developed parallel to Galton's foundational writing in the field of eugenics, as, "Galton introduced the word 'eugenics' in this volume on p. 24 and defined it as 'the science of improving stock,' encompassing not only judicious selective breeding but all the various factors that give superior traits an improved chance of prevailing over inferior ones. A large part of the work is devoted to Galton's investigations in experimental psychology, including sense perception and mental imagery" (Norman 866). Garrison-Morton 230.

      GALTON FRANCIS: (1822-1911) English Victorian

      Est: €300 - €450

GALTON FRANCIS: (1822-1911) English Victorian Polymath: an anthropologist, tropical explorer, geographer, inventor, meteorologist amongst other interests. Cousin of Charles Darwin. A good A.L.S., Francis Galton, four pages, 8vo, Rutland Gate, London, 6th October 1908, to Charles Partridge ('Resident of Mako', Ethiopia). Galton thanks his correspondent for their book, which he has read from cover to cover, and continues 'You have indeed a valuable yield for inquiries ....I can quite understand your dislike to the interference of bigoted missionaries....If Muslimism were not itself, usually so fanatical a creed I could easily fancy that English public opinion might, after a few years of howling execrations, be brought to accept it as a protected creed, with which Xtians bear no right to meddle when it is the creed of the land. But the "IF" is a big one. Some discussion is now going on about it among experts.' Galton further writes 'What you said about polygamy and a long period of lactation is I suppose only applicable where women are over numerous? And when the population is naturally very prolific. A negro in the conditions you describe, may well be happier than an average Englishman, but all religions are based on the feeling that happiness (Hedonism) is not the highest end of life...It would be very instructive if the workings of some of the highest class (most respected) Negro....could be analysed & compared with those of Europeans. Do you recognise great & certain differences between the natural mental gifts of many tribes?....But are there many cases of persons of tribe A having been wholly brought up in tribe B and yet showing the characters of A? The slave trade must furnish material to such cases.' He continues to remark 'I hope you will continue - nay am sure you will - to observe & note & compare and become a recognised authority' and refers to a meeting of an Education Society, 'But Parliament is on the point of meeting and it is unlikely that anything we can say will get much hearing. The Royal Commissions Report on the Feeble-Minded which points out the necessity of dealing somewhat drastically with the degenerate, over prolific branch of our race, will force the hands of the legislation.' Galton concludes 'As I write, news comes of this most threatening Bulgarian matter. War may have broken out by the time this reaches you, and a war of which no one can foresee the end.' A letter of fascinating content. Some very light, extremely minor foxing and a couple of small, neat tears to the folds, only very slightly affecting one word of text and not the signature, otherwise VG. £250-350
