Baldomero Galofre begins his formation in the School of La Lonja of Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Martí Alsina, and later he completes his studies in Madrid. He became known in 1866 at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona, where he would participate again in 1870, and in 1868 he participated with landscapes and studies at the Aragonese Exhibition in Zaragoza. In 1874 he obtained a pension to further his studies in Rome, where he lived for ten years. There he attended the Chigi Academy and the International Circle of Art, and met Mariano Fortuny in the last months of his life, following the stylistic guidelines of his compatriot. Back in Barcelona, in 1884 he held a personal exhibition that was very well received; Narciso Oller praised his great naturalism, and showed him as an example against history painting. Four years later, in a new individual exhibition, this time in Madrid, one of his works was acquired by the Queen Regent. In 1903, in a special room in the Museum of Barcelona, Galofre presented an important exhibition of his work. He developed a luminous and detailed style, and painted landscapes and popular scenes within the orbit of Fortuny. He was also an extraordinary draughtsman. He is currently represented in the MACBA and the Art and History Museum of Reus, among other public and private collections.

Exquisite scene of interior, in which a young woman lying on a chaise longe contemplates her parakeet that has just escaped from a cage that hangs from the high ceiling of the room. The lady's satin dress spills over the Persian carpet, revealing her small right foot, perched on a velvet upholstered cushion. Her black hair contrasts with the whiteness of the pearls that border it. Gem-studded gold earrings and pendants sparkle against her clear, pearly skin. In her left hand she holds a mandolin, and the score remains on the table decorated with a huge porcelain vase that holds a large-leafed plant. A silk curtain shimmers with golden reflections. The preciousness of the whole is achieved by employing a tight brushstroke and a masterful use of tones. Baldomero Galofre began his training at the Escuela de La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Martí Alsina, and later completed his studies in Madrid. He became known in 1866 at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona, where he would participate again in 1870, and in 1868 he participated with landscapes and studies at the Aragonese Exhibition in Zaragoza. In this work carried out shortly before leaving as a pensioner to Rome, Baldomero Galofre builds in this canvas a clear horizon, with the sea surpassed by the rocks in the foreground, clearly differentiated from the sky of scenographic clouds, which swirl on the horizon and open up in the upper part to leave only a piece of blue sky open. In contrast, the plane of the rocks is dark, heavy, worked in brownish tones against which wet rocks stand out like glints. In this way, Galofre deploys a masterly play of contrasting lights, creating an energetic atmosphere. Likewise, the work is not at all flat, but appears magnificently constructed in depth through a subtle and naturalistic gradation of tone and light. Baldomero Galofre constructs in this canvas an image of panoramic vocation, taking advantage of the elongated format that allows to organize in a clear way the space and to enlarge it horizontally. Thus, we see a clear horizon, with the mountains in the background towering above the landscape, which the artist sets in the foreground, clearly differentiated from the sky of scenic clouds, which swirl over the horizon and open up at the top to reveal a clear sky with an intense blue tone. In contrast, the ground plane is heavy, worked with warm tones against which a small mirrored stream and wet rocks sparkle in the sun. A figure walks through the place. However, the earthen space is by no means flat, but appears magnificently constructed in depth through a subtle, naturalistic gradation of tone and light. A tireless observer of customs, folk costumes and the most genuine typical features, his taste for anecdotes is evident in this composition in which large ceramic jars occupy the centre of a deal in the making. It is not only the precious description of the ponchos, gaiters, jackets, scarves... that stands out. The landscape, bordered by mountains and under a wide sky furrowed with soft clouds, also gives the scene a great compositional rigour. She, wrapped in a white silk mantilla, turns her back to us when answering the call. The courting scene is set in a meadow of lush vegetation, which even climbs up the wall of the house, embellishing its façade. In the distance, the white houses of an Andalusian village can be made out. The canvas is painted with lively, precious brushstrokes, capable of bringing out the qualities of each detail and at the same time giving an overall impression: flashes of light, mossy surfaces, satin garments, etc. The succession of shots is magnificent. The succession of planes appears magnificently constructed in depth through a subtle and naturalistic tonal gradation. In this work Baldomero Galofre captures a scene full of dynamism and narrative tension, captured with a language of clear impressionist filiation based on a special luminous sensibility and an agile, vibrant and full of life brushstroke, especially expressive in the characters and the horses. The painter takes great pleasure in describing the details, especially the clothes and ornaments of the popular types, as well as in the narrative, seeking the expressiveness of the gestures and without skimping on secondary details. The scene takes place in an Andalusian fair, as indicated by the stalls in the background, and is set in a rugged landscape dominated by the imposing fortification on the right of the composition and the majestic mountains on the horizon. In front of it, a group of people on horseback, dressed in folk costume, wait patiently. The men are dressed in fine cotton shirts with pleats on the breastplate, waistcoats, velvet taleguillas and typical Andalusian hats, while the women (represented to a lesser extent) wear long dresses with plunging necklines. In the background, a whirlwind of mounted musketeers gallops forward, sweeping away everything in their path. The work is a continuation of the Sevillian Romantic school, the main exponent of 19th-century Romantic-style genre painting in Spain. Traditionally, Spanish painting and literature have been interested in popular customs and types. The arrival of Romanticism enlivened this trend, bringing to the Hispanic tradition the vision that foreigners had of our people, due to the snobbery of a Europeanising and liberal national bourgeoisie which, also due to foreign influence and under the Romantic fashion, turned its eyes to the people and monuments of the past. This, which was general throughout Spain, was particularly prevalent in Andalusia, as this land was the dream destination of foreigners, and where the influence of the vision they had of the Spaniard and his peculiar customs had to be felt most strongly. Thus, of the two main schools of costumbrista, the Sevillian school was focused on a gentle, folkloric picturesqueness, far removed from any attempt at social criticism. He studied with Ramón Martí Alsina at the La Lonja School in Barcelona and later obtained a place as an engraving pensioner at the Spanish Academy in Rome, where he remained for twelve years. From there he sent landscapes to the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts. Apart from Roman views, he practiced Neapolitan seascapes and some genre scenes inspired by Mariano Fortuny. Upon his return, he continued to make sea and beach scenes with anecdotes of fishermen and genre scenes set in Galicia, Asturias, Levante and Andalusia. There he attended the Accademia Chigi and the Circulo Internacional de Arte and met Mariano Fortuny in the last months of his life, following the stylistic guidelines of his compatriot. On his return to Barcelona in 1884 he held a personal exhibition which was very well received; Narciso Oller praised his great naturalism and showed him as an example against history painting. Four years later, in a new individual exhibition, this time in Madrid, one of his works was acquired by the Queen Regent. In 1903, in a special room in the Barcelona Museum, Galofre presented an important exhibition of his work. He developed a luminous, detailed style and painted landscapes and popular scenes in the style of Fortuny. He was also an extraordinary draughtsman. He is currently represented in the MACBA and the Museum of Art and History of Reus, among other public and private collections.

Baldomero Galofre begins his formation in the School of La Lonja in Barcelona, where he was a disciple of Martí Alsina, and later he completes his studies in Madrid. He became known in 1866 at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona, where he took part again in 1870, and in 1868 he took part in the Aragonese Exhibition in Saragossa with landscapes and studies. In 1874 he obtained a grant to further his studies in Rome, where he lived for ten years.
