Landscape signed and dated 1981 (lower left) pastel on masonite board 24” x 36” (61 cm x 91 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot Romulo Galicano's 1981 Landscape features the vertical elements he so often inputs in his works. Here, Galicano's tall and unbending trees are depicted in his realist style. Despite his classical background, he had been interested in abstraction. His works' vertical lines serve as a "reconciliation between opposite poles and the merging of the Subjective and the Objective—creating a new meaningful work of art." This merging of the abstract and the figurative is evident in this work. An apprentice of the Amoroslo of the South and his uncle Martino Abellana, Galicano’s works boast of remarkable technicality, a result of his private lessons with his uncle and his formal education at the University of the East. In Landscape, Galicano depicts a soft dreamy patch of woodland. The wind wafting through the air is evident in the way the leaves on the trees move. There is a sense of nostalgia in this piece, as befits the Visayan Realist Master. (Hannah Valiente)

PROPERTY FROM THE DON EUGENIO “GENY” LOPEZ JR. COLLECTION Ponte des Arts, Paris signed and dated 1983 (lower right) pastel on paper 21" x 29 1/2" (53 cm x 75 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP: In this charming Parisian scene, Romulo Galicano depicts the iconic Pont des Arts, a pedestrian bridge spanning the River Seine. It is a national historic monument declared by the French Ministry of Culture. The Pont des Arts is a beloved spot for painters owing to its romantic panorama that cuts across the historic River Seine, the cradle of civilization of Paris, the city of love. The bridge has inspired numerous painters throughout history, from Matisse, Monet, Renoir, and Seurat, whose 1884-86 magnum opus Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte served as a pioneering work of the neo-impressionist movement. During Galicano’s European sojourn in the 1980s, the River Seine and its overarching Pont des Arts served as one of his muses, as exemplified by this 1983 work. In this piece, the building of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, one of the five academies of the prestigious Institut de France, can be seenon the left. Depicted in the far right are two of the most iconic edifices in the Louvre Palace: the École du Louvre and the Pavillon de la Trémoille, seemingly covered in a dreamy haze that emphasizes Galicano’s mastery of perspective (The two buildings are situated on the right bank of the Seine at a distance of more than half a kilometer from the Pont des Arts, while the Académie des Beaux-Arts is located approximately in front of the bridge, on the opposite side of the river.). A stalwart of painting en plein air and profoundly observing nature as espoused by his uncle, mentor, and foremost luminary Martino Abellana, Galicano bathes the composition in an earthy palette, imbuing the piece with a soothing atmosphere that matches the charming and intimate setting of the Pont des Arts. PROPERTY FROM THE DELY TAMBUNTING ONGSIAKO COLLECTION Landscape signed and dated 1979 (lower left) pastel on paper 15" x 21 1/4" (38 cm x 54 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP: The influence of the Amorsolo of the South and his uncle Martino Abellana is evident in the works of Romulo Galicano. His works boast remarkable technicality, a product of his academic background at the University of the East and the private art lessons he got from Abellena when he was younger. His 1979 work Landscape showcases Galicano’s brilliance in shadow and colors. Depicting a provincial house in a shaded area, Galicano perfectly replicates the serenity of an early summer afternoon, the quiet that envelops the house as the family takes their afternoon siesta. The sunlight shines down from between the foliage of the trees, a bright pop of yellow in an otherwise shadowy area. It is as if the viewer can feel the summer breeze on their skin and smell the fresh rural air – it is truly a nostalgic masterpiece from the Visayan Realist Master. (Hannah Valiente)

Kutsero signed and dated 1976 (lower right) watercolor on paper 21" x 29" (53 cm x 74 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Romulo Galicano has always taken creative inspiration from his native Carcar in the province of Cebu. Through his artistic training under the foremost Cebuano virtuoso, the ‘Dean of Cebuano Painters’ and his uncle Martino Abellana, Galicano imbibed the painterly technique of directly observing from nature as a fathomless wellspring for ingenuity. It was also through his uncle’s mentorship that Galicano had an Impressionist phase during the early years of his career from 1969 to 1975. This period also concurred with his ‘Dimasalang Group’ era, where he practiced painting en plein air with other figurative artists Emilio Aguilar Cruz, Andres Cristobal Cruz, Ibarra de la Rosa, and Sofronio Mendoza. 1976 was a period of transition for Galicano. That year, he slowly veered away from his Impressionist visual language and ventured toward tonal paintings. By this time, Galicano had achieved his artistic coming of age, deviating from the boldness and earthiness of Abellana’s works and progressing into a photo-realistic approach to figurative paintings. Yet, Galicano still retained his attribute as a staunch observer of nature. Galicano’s photo-realist approach is evident even in his watercolor works, such as this 1976 piece. Here, the artist integrates his Impressionist training with his newfound style of photorealism. Since watercolor is a medium only a few artists can masterfully manipulate due to its unpredictable nature, Galicano brings out his Impressionist flair by combining speed with meticulous accuracy in rendering a life-like image of the subject. The resulting work exudes an intimate and natural charm, in which a local scenery is depicted as void of any artificiality, like a photograph taken candidly. (A.M.)

Tagaytay, Batangas signed and dated 1978 (lower right) pastel on paper 14 1/2" x 23 1/2" (37 cm x 60 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Romulo Galicano’s art is technically academic and philosophical in approach. His oeuvres are reminiscent of the old Filipino Masters with modern sensibilities. He believes that every artist should never be a prisoner of himself and of his philosophy, reputation, success, and above all, his vanity. For Galicano, the direction of an artist should always be freedom. The Cebu-born realist was raised in a family of artists. He studied landscape and figurative painting under his uncle, Martino Abellana. The young Galicano also further learned landscape art through direct observations of colors from nature, following Leonardo da Vinci’s advice that nature is the best teacher. A Manila Bulletin article shared that Galicano was six years old and in kindergarten when he first discovered his interest in the arts. “His teacher had colored chalks and would draw a mountain, flower, etc., and he would really be attentive while the other kids were less interested. That was when he realized he wanted to draw, to paint, that this would be his life.” In 1979, a year after the piece at hand was made, Galicano held his 6th one-man show at the ABC Galleries, Manila. Romulo Galicano (b. 1945) Poor Man's Meal (Homage to the Potato Eater by Vincent Van Gogh) signed and dated 2020 (lower right) oil on canvas 60" x 85" (152 cm x 216 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot In his Potato Eaters, Van Gogh shows the peasants' alienation from their produce. How come they cannot enjoy the fruits of their labor is a subject he subtly yet poignantly touches on. Galicano aimed to imbibe this quality in his Poor Man's Meal. "We had a hard life in Carcar. Back then, every single day would be filled with uncertainties. We would always be pervaded with doubts if we could survive and carry on with each passing day.” The somber, dimly lit composition explicitly represents their penurious living conditions. It also captures an atmosphere similar to Joey Velasco's 2005 painting, Hapag ng Pag-Asa, which appropriates the image of the Last Supper and shows Jesus Christ dining with the street children. A small beam of light from the early morning sun radiates in the background. In the midst of their predicament, the morning setting evokes the old Filipino adage, "The coming of a new dawn enkindles a renewed sense of hope." "That is why Poor Man's Meal is one of my best works, one of my most treasured works, because it is a genuine reflection of my youth, my struggles, my hopes, and my aspirations," Galicano touchingly concludes. Romulo Galicano - Sea Breeze

            Est: ₱1,200,000 - ₱1,560,000

Romulo Galicano Sea Breeze signed and dated 1993 (lower right) oil on canvas 32" x 48" (81 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Romulo Galicano started his painting career creating landscapes. From the late 1960s to the 1970s, Galicano traversed through the realms of Impressionist painting, greatly influenced by his first mentor, foremost luminary, and uncle, Martino Abellana. With his training under Abellana, Galicano acquired the painterly technique of directly observing nature as an eternal spring for artistic inspiration. This period was also his 'Dimasalang Group' era, where he painted with Emilio Aguilar Cruz, Andres Cristobal Cruz, Ibarra de la Rosa, and Sofronio Mendoza, figurative painters who practiced painting in plein air. In 1976, Galicano ventured into tonal paintings depicting atmospheric scenes of the seacoasts of his native Cebu, as well as Pangasinan. This style is very much evident in this 1993 piece depicting a group of fishermen after a day's bountiful catch. Here, Galicano expresses tranquility amid the laborious toiling in the vast sea. The work is poetic in form, where mood and shadow take the forefront. A subdued atmospheric effect evoking warmness can be discerned through the artist's application of dark tones, which dominate the composition. (A.M.)

He was also under the tutelage of abstractionist Florencio Concepcion in the University of the East, where he took up fine arts. His works are characterized by heightened effects of light, shade, and colors, as well as a certain mesmerizing liveliness resulting from his attention to achieving pictorial approximations of nature. Though Galicano has painted numerous scenes depicting local and rural landscapes, his constant sojourns to foreign cities and spaces have also been subject to his masterful brushwork and unparalleled technique. There was a time when paintings of faraway cities were unspoken badges of sophistication for the artist. Paintings as remembrances of distant lands broaden the viewer’s world, opening doors to how the artist perceives the experience of a faraway place.

            Mar. 05, 2022

Romulo Galicano (b. 1945) - Morning Scene at Malabon

            Est: ₱200,000 - ₱260,000

Morning Scene at Malabon signed and dated 1975 (lower left) pastel on paper 18" x 24" (46 cm x 61 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artists confirming the authenticity of this lot Romulo Galicano’s approach to art is unique in that he creates pieces that are influenced by ideas of Leonardo da Vinci of nature being the best form of teacher while incorporating philosophical ideals along with genre and figure elements to create a synthesis that is his own unique style. Through his long career, he has won critical acclaim while winning various awards over the years and was a part of many one man show exhibitions. Galicano exhibits much of his style that stands out in many of his works. He integrates classical themes and realism mixed in with elements of abstract expressionism. At times takes some measure in artistic license when it comes to depicting historical themes to emphasize the philosophical and emotional impact towards a certain piece. One theme that Galicano believes for what an artist should strive for and what emphasizes with his works is the idea of freedom. This particular piece entitled; “Malabon, Rizal” is an example of his early direction in creating art, where he encapsulates the beauty and emotion that can come from a landscape with minimal figures. The painting itself depicts a scene out in nature, where found in the distance is a lone figure in red stands with his back turned fishing in a marsh land surrounded by a few trees out of season and flowers of light aqua and light fuscia around the foreground while a gray sky hovers over the entire landscape, taking away any of the liveliness of the sunlight. There is a certain element that this lone red figure complements the scene as it stands out and brings focus toward its particular placement in the canvas. Being in the middle of a gray scenery somehow invites viewers to immerse themselves more into the experience. It is a subtle contrast of ideals where most of the environment is depicted in this gloom yet the lone bright red figure still stays and fishes despite this gloom as the flowers behind him are in bloom. There is a balance of an existential element and melancholic gloom complemented with the little signs of life that the lone figure and the flowers represent that Galicano expressed by letting his work speak freely through his subtle philosophical elements along with his realism and abstract expressionism style.

Novaliches signed and dated 1977 (lower right) pastel on paper 22 1/2" x 30" (57 cm x 76 cm) PROPERTY FROM THE DOÑA NENE QUIMSON COLLECTION A student of nature, revered Filipino artist Romulo Galicano is known for his awe-inspiring and beautiful depictions of natural scenery. Though Galicano himself was well-traveled and thus painted a variety of foreign landscapes, cities, and towns, it is his works featuring localities in the Philippines that had an unmistakable sense of charm and nostalgia. This particular piece features a landscape located in the township of Novaliches. Despite its sparse color palette, Galicano’s intricate brushwork lends this piece’s relatively monochromatic treatment a sense of reserved dynamism—unearthing the richness of his subject-matter with only a handful of shades and tones. The overall charm is in the details, as one can see in this painting in which the folk elements are rendered in fluid brush strokes that show both his mentor's and the French impressionists’ influence on his art style. But what truly makes this particular painting is the way a small ray of light has made its way to one of the trunks present in the works, effectively giving off a warm orange glow that is much more intense than the rest of the canvas. This vibrancy, coupled with the pastel hues, effectively infuses a scene devoid of human activity with charm, nostalgia, and emotion.

Depicting the façade and bell tower of the Santa Ana Church, the work was painted on the spot in the vicinity of the structure along New Panaderos Street in Santa Ana, Manila. It was 7 a.m., and only a few vehicles were passing by in front of the historic church. Thus, Galicano had the opportunity to produce an arresting piece in a swift stroke of his brush, displaying the grandeur of a structure that has endured the vicissitudes of our tumultuous history.   The Santa Ana Church was designated by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (then the Philippine Historical Research and Markers Committee as a Historic Building in 1936. The church was given a historical marker for being the site of the first established Franciscan mission outside Hispanic Manila. The church's location is significant in Philippine history since the pre-colonial Kingdom of Namayan, one of the principal polities along the Pasig River, grew around its locality.

Romulo Galicano (b. 1945) Sunday Morning at Binondo (Binondo Church) signed and dated 1972 (lower left) oil on wood panel 16" x 15" (41 cm x 38 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot PROVENANCE: Acquired directly from the artist Mentored by the Amorsolo of the South, Martino Abellana, Carcar born master realist Romulo Galicano renders idyllic rural views with heightened details that evoke dramatic impact and nostalgic mood. He produces not only stunning land and seascape works, but also depicts the activities of the rural folk, from tending livestock and catching fish to going to the market with picturesque backgrounds. Galicano utilizes the effects of light and shade as well as the power of color in achieving atmosphere, exploring its various possibilities on the canvas. In this particular piece, Galicano draws our attention to one of Manila’s most recognizable landmarks, Binondo Church. An integral part of Manila’s cultural and architectural history, the church was constructed and built by the Dominicans 1596. The current structure we see today was completed in 1852 and features an octagonal pagoda-like bell tower which suggests the Chinese culture of the parishioners. The church was burned during the British invasion of 1762. Another one was quickly built following the occupation. Improvements were made in the 18th century but the edifice was again destroyed in the 1863 earthquake. Galicano’s seemingly takes us back in time and depicts the church without its current surroundings. The towering establishments and roads of the surrounding Binondo area are replaced by a much more idyllic setting, effectively lending the viewer a glimpse of the past.

Romulo Galicano (b. 1945) Notre-Dame de Paris signed and dated 1984 Paris (lower left) oil on canvas 16” x 20” (41 cm x 51 cm) This piece is accompanied by a certificate issued by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot Mentored by Martino Abellana, Carcar-born master realist Romulo Galicano renders idyllic rural views with heightened details that evoke dramatic impact and nostalgic mood. He was also under the tutelage of abstractionist Florencio Concepcion in the University of the East where he took up fine arts. His works are characterized by heightened effects of light, shade, and colors as well as a certain mesmerizing liveliness resulting from his attention to achieving pictorial approximations of nature. Though Galicano has painted numerous scenes depicting local and rural landscapes, his constant sojourns to foreign cities and spaces have also been subject to his masterful brushwork and unparalleled technique. This 1984 oil on canvas work depicts the quiet and sombre atmosphere of a distinctly western and european city. Despite its sparse color palette, Galicano’s intricate brushwork lends this piece’s relatively monochromatic treatment a sense of reserved dynamism—unearthing the richness of his subject-matter with only a handful of shades and tones. The overall charm is in the details, as one can see in this painting in which the folk elements are rendered in fluid brush strokes that show both Abellana’s and the French impressionists’ influence on his art style.

Galicano’s artistic practice effectively reintroduced the classical techniques and forms of the medium to the modern world, effectively building upon years of development. His works have a timeless yet modern charm that idyllically captures the beauty of the modern world. In this particular sketch of a nude, Galicano offers the viewer an insight into the germination of his process, which reveals that it is not all about a fidelity to reality but also an infusion of energy into human form, so much so that what the viewer sees is flesh made alive by a collection of subtle shades and tonalities. Seated on a cushion with her gaze tilted away from the viewer, the figure has a distinct weight and presence — a characteristic which is also evident in Galicano’s large-scale figurative works.

This sweetly melancholic and ochre painting seems to occupy a borderline between everyday observation and a visionary world all Galicano’s own. A sense of liveliness is conveyed by the various tones of green, ochre and white modulating in various intensities and with effects of transparency. Galicano’s aim was to heighten and dramatize the effects of light and shade, and to achieve a more exact pictorial approximation of nature’s fleeting changes.   This marvelous piece by the Cebuano master perfectly captures Galicano’s intimate and skillful mastery over his craft. The scene is full of contrasting and complementary elements, allowing Galicano’s intimate and succinct craftsmanship to be seen in full display. One of the oldest and most distinct cities in Spain, Toledo contributes to the country’s rich history and heritage. Its Catholic cathedrals, mosques, and synagogues are breathtaking architectural wonders—a fusion of cultures and religions have been present in Toledo over the centuries—and tourists explore its impressive landmarks established since the ancient Roman times. Adventurous sightseers are in for a treat here with captivating views and monuments to enjoy. Acclaimed Cebuano painter Romulo Galicano was charmed by the scenic views of Toledo, particularly Tagus River, the longest waterway of the Iberian Peninsula flowing westward across Spain and Portugal. An important part for the architectural layout of the cultural landscape of Aranjuez, kings chose this place to build a royal residence. During the reign of Fernando VI, for example, the territory was used for leisure such as strolling along the river, holding nautical battles, and offering concerts on water. Galicano’s nostalgic and serene 1985 painting is an intimate pictorial approximation of a river scene in Toledo, Spain. Here, his distinct sense of perspective and balance bring out an elegant atmospheric effect. Galicano, the master landscape artist and portraitist from Carcar, continues to bring pride to Cebu with his intimate land and seascape works. Born to a family of artists, he was mentored by his uncle, Cebuano realist master Martino Abellana—who was also called the “Amorsolo of the South” and the “Dean of Cebuano Painters.”

COLLECTION   Accompanied by a certificate issued by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot     WRITE UP: The kakawate is most common in South Luzon areas, shedding leaves around December and in bloom in February and March. Its pinkish white flowers are also likened to cherry blossoms. Introduced by the Spaniards to the country, the kakawate serves as an ornamental flowering tree easy and inexpensive to propagate, naturalized throughout the Philippines. Farmers also plant them to shade other perennial crops like cacao, coffee, and tea, among other uses of its roots and leaves. Romulo Galicano, Cebu’s master landscape artist and portraitist is known for his engaging landscape and seascape works as well as portraits. His uncle, the Cebuano realist master Martino Abellana, and the French impressionist style influenced his artistic sensibilities and techniques such as his fluid brushstrokes. Take for instance this 1997 work. Here, Galicano depicts one kakawate season in rich detail—an idyllic rural scene with heightened compositional elements. Showcased are his signature effects of light and shade and use of color to achieve atmosphere.
