CHARLES GAINES (1944 - ) Number and Trees: Tiergarten Print Series #1. Color screenprint on Rives BFK paper, 2018. 981x475 mm; 38⅞x29⅜ inches. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 13/25 in pencil, lower edge. Published by The Kitchen, New York. Created on the occasion of performances by Tyshawn Sorey at The Kitchen, New York, October 21–23, 2018, Charles Gaines produced this special limited-edition print jn his celebrated series featuring drawing plots of trees. Gaines, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, was born in 1944. He began his career as a painter with his M.F.A. from the School of Art and Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1967, eventually growing into an integral force in the realm of conceptual art. At its core, Gaines' work exists in the space between the objective and subjective, using visually structured systems to fortify his explorations. In Gaines' notable series of the 1970s, Regression , he engaged mathematical and numeric systems of rendering images where each mark was numbered, thus culminating in calculations capable of being analyzed and compared, allowing both objective and subjective valuations of his work.
