Robert Merrell Gage (1892 - 1981) "Taos Church" Watercolor on Paper. This work is double sided and on the reverse depicts a pencil study of an artist at work. Hand signed on the front, along with estate stamp on reverse. Sculptor and painter Robert Merrell Gage, also known as Merrell Gage, was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1892. He studied at the Art Students League in 1911 and at the Robert Henri School of Art and also served as an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum from 1914 to 1916 and again from 1921 to 1923. Borglum was a tremendous influence on Gage. Gutzom Borglum, the man who carved the famous figures on Mount Rushmore, called Robert Merrell Gage "that steady-eyed young sculptor." An alumni of the most sophisticated art schools, Robert Merrell Gage turned for subject matter to the basics of American history, the stories of the western struggle, and the lives of heroes of the American soul. LINCOLN IN PROFILE. GAGE, ROBERT MERRILL, sculptor. 1892-1981. Circular bronze medallion with profile portrait left, stamped Merrill Gage 1955, 555 mm in diameter. Gage was the longtime chair of the USC Fine Art Department, and created many important sculptures in the Southern California area, including Lincoln the Lawyer at 110 Grand Avenue. A 30-minute film titled The Face of Lincoln and featuring Gage executing a Lincoln sculpture while telling Lincoln's life story won the 1956 Academy Award © for Best Documentary Short. Weathered Condition // From The Estate Of Fran And Ed Elliot // (24) Merrell Gage, Known As A Sculptor, Educator And Lecturer, Was Born In Topeka, Kansas, But Gage Left The Ranches Of The Midwest For A Life In The Arts. Born In Topeka, Ks On Dec. 26, 1892. Gage Worked On Ranches In The Midwest Before Settling On An Art Career. Initially, He Studied In Nyc At The Asl, The Robert Henri School, And The Beaux Arts Institute Of Design. He Was Apprenticed To Gutzon Borglum From 1914-16 And Again During 1921-23 When He Assisted In The Designs For The Stone Mountain Georgia Project. After Serving In The Medical Corps In Wwi, Gage Taught Sculpture At Washburn College (topeka) And The Kansas City Art Institute Before Moving To Los Angeles In 1923. He And His Family Lived In A Shack On Huntington Palisades Before Settling Into A Home In Santa Monica Canyon. Gage Exhibited Locally, Fulfilled Many Sculpture Commissions, And Taught At Chouinard Art School (1928-30) And At Usc (1925-58).

Robert Merrell Gage (after) (American, 1891-1981) John Brown Cast Bronze 32" x 18" x 16 1/2" Edition of 9 A scarce monumental bronze bust of militant Kansas abolitionist John Brown, with a fearless gaze and twisting beard, executed at a scale reflective of Brown's larger-than-life place in history. This bronze is believed to have been cast from an original early-career plaster bust by Robert Merrell Gage, and executed after Gage by the artist's estate at a much later time. Marked "Merrell Gage" in the casting to the back base, and numbered 5 in an edition of 9. Weighs 103 pounds. Born in Topeka, KS, Robert Merrell Gage worked as an assistant in the studio of Gutzon Borglum, came to prominence as a Kansas sculptor, and went on to teach in the art department at the University of Southern California for 33 years. Labeled "the American sculptor," Merrell Gage sculpted portraits of public figures of the 19th century including Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman. His Kansas roots and historical interest led him to John Brown as a subject, as it did contemporary John Steuart Curry, depicting the defiantly controversial figurehead of Bleeding Kansas. Robert Merrell Gage's public artwork can be found at the Kansas State Capitol and Indiana Statehouse, as well as several locations in Kansas City and southern California.
